RE: GSP Giles 202
As described in my posting #827, I cracked the landing gear on my Giles-202. As a replacement I bought the Great Planes Gene Soucy Extra gear from Tower Hobbies. Thanks for the good advice, Jon.
To avoid opening the tunnel under the fuselage I cut the gear in two pieces, removing approx. one inch in the middle of the flat part. From the cut out piece of aluminium I made a washer that clamps the two inner gear ends to the support plate. The screw in the middle is reached both from the inside of the plane, and through a 3/8"" hole through the balsa bottom of the fuse. I hope the close-in photo will explain how this was done.
I think the Extra gear looks neat on the Giles. I wanted to take some outdoor photos, but bad weather prevented this.
Helge.

Hi everyone. Just keeping the thread alive. I know we all have the same plane, but for what it's worth, here are a few pics of mine. Just completed, and has one maiden flight on it only. From that one flight, I could tell the plane had unlimited vertical, was fast, on rails, and glided forever. Had some glitching probs and hope I solved them and am now awaiting good weather so I can fly it again. Mine has Futaba radio, with one S3151 servo on throttle, and five Hitec HS645MG's on all flying surfaces. Power is the OS160FX with a VP-30 Perry Pump. I don't have the big decals on the plane because they were all wrinkled and never replaced by AKM after many reminders...it's all good as the plane looks fine without them. The red plane in the background is the Great Planes Gene Soucy Extra...my eldest son is flying that with an OS160FX in it too. Hope you like the pics! Jon

Het Maukaonyx,
Great looking bird!! What type of muffler did you use??. I tried to fit a Bison Pitts muffler on my but it hit the "box" firewall and I had to use a slimline. Let me know that would be great.
Thanks
Mike

RE: GSP Giles 202
Mike, thanks for the compliment, but yours must or will look the same, haha. That is a Slimline Pitts style muffler in there, same as what you bought. I also had the misfortune of buying the Bisson muffler first, and then found as I got to the cowl installation that the Bisson was too big. I know guys have used it, but had to uglify the cowl by doing so, so I sold it on eBay and bought the Slimline. It fits in there so easily and keeps the nose looking good!
By the way guys, you might notice in one pic from the tail that I have an instrument panel decal/sticker in the cockpit. My son with the Gene Soucy Extra gave me the extra instrument panel decal that comes with that plane. Fits our Giles 202 darn good!
Take care and HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO EVERYONE! Jon

Hehe, yeah that thing rips with the 160 and pump.
I used the Bisson, but the motor sits on the OS radial mount and it all worked fine, without mods.Bottom of cowl was cut neatly.
I use(d) the APC 18x6W,incredible bottom punch and plenty of speed.

Throw the round hinges away, not enough surface to grip and are of unknown material.I suspect they were used to hold the control surface in place after manufacturing and during shipping.

The hole for these hinges are predrilled and they work good. follow the manual sheet and dont assume.. We have two of these planes at our club with over 40 flights,,,the hinges work well.

It is better advice to use a proven hinge of choice, rather than recomending the discs that came with it.Just like the hardware.
Its 60 size $ store stuff.Sure it may work, but if you got an extra 20 bucks to spend, buy some better linkage items for peace of mind.

I didn't really use mine since last summer, But I have a new 26cc gas engine that I want to try, will go in that plane. The Giles is a good platform for imac stuff, not as good for 3d.

Well I would look like an Ass if I said "I told you so"
But it was coming, its just not a right size Giles to put a 26cc in it.
But there are quite a few aircraft that could fit your engine and be enjoyable,so hang in there.Several come to mind that maybe real fun,but are more scale aeroabtic like.Just hang in there, your 26 wil have a home that is more suitable.

Go ahead and say it. I have big shoulders. Even with a more powerful engine on the front I don't think I like this bird. I plane on going with a Sukhoi-SU31. Probably this one http://www.cermark.net/List.php?TID=14

RE: GSP Giles 202
I think you will have similar results with that PaBen.
If you want something slower, but aerobatic and very stable you could try the FuntanaX100.
It has lots of wing, but is very agile. It has been built with a 26cc a few times.
You may not like the looks of it,not sure on your tastes. It wont wild 3D with a 26,but will do any sport aerobatic sequence and some 3D stuff. The plane can be flown like a kite,is affordable and builds confidence.
I have some other ideas too,but I have to sign off for awhile...

Just scrolled up and looked at your prop choices.Try a good 18x6,like an APC or ZingerPro etc, much more suited for a 26 and the Giles.

RE: GSP Giles 202
I didn't fly with that prop. First flight was with a 18x8 wooden zinger. Pulled about 6800 rpm. Tip stalled at 6 ft from ground at landing. Hit hard, this is a tough bird. Broke prop. Went with a 16x6 next flight, pulled about 7700 rpm. It had more power but not enough to pull out of a jam. Next landing it tip stalled at 10ft, cart wheeled wing, nose to wing. still fly able. Broke the prop again. I have a 16x8 to try but I might pull the gear off and sell out before I really break it. I had a Sukhoi and it didn't tip stall at all. It was a dream to fly and land. Look at the video on the link. He has a 26cc on that one, and it will hover all day long.

RE: GSP Giles 202
Hi Guys
I've been lurking in this thread for a while now - in fact, since I bought a used Giles without engine and radio gear about a year ago. Well, now that I've finally got a few other things out of the way I found the time to get it ready for flight. I've installed a Zenoah G26 with APC 18x6W prop and Hitec 645's throughout. I've moved the standard fuel tank right back against the bulkhead just in front of the wing joiner tube, 2 x 4.8v receiver battery packs immediately behind the wing joiner tube, kill switch servo and throttle servo mounted immediately in front of the bulkhead at the wing trailing edge and receiver mounted immediately behind this bulkhead. It balanced spot on at the balance point I got from this thread, with no balance weight needed. Total weight with fuel tank 1/2 full is 13.5 lbs. Engine thrust is 15 lbs. I gave it it's first flight today - it needed a couple of clicks of down trim and that's it. What a great flier - I used the full throws that I got from this thread with 60% expo - nice and mild around the centre, but still plenty of throw at the extremes - loved the roll rate I'm wondering if it's a bit nose heavy at the stated balance point, hence the down trim. I'll some more flights on then start moving the CG back by moving the receiver batteries back.
Anyway, I just thought I'd say thanks for the info I've got from here and let know about my setup.

RE: GSP Giles 202
Well, this is the third time I tried to post this. The site been pretty slow. I saved the wing cuffs from my P-51 PTS and might put them on my Giles before I give up on it. Kinda like training wheels until I get the feel for this bird.
