Great Planes Giant Ugly Stick

RE: Great Planes Giant Ugly Stick
The hinges supplied with the Giant Big Stiks hold up very well.
The hinges that tend to fail are the Chinese CA hinges with the plastic substrate.
The fibers are glued onto the plastic. Over time the bond will lessen and the fibers will let go completely.
I've seen many older CA hinges of this type come clean off leaving a shiny transparent film on one side and nothing but fibers on the other.
The GP supplied hinges are ALL fiber and do not have this problem, neither do the Dubro ones.
I've built just a FEW of these planes.... this year alone the following.

Trust me, they will not if properly installed.
See those planes above? They get 28 flights a DAY EACH every Saturday... all have the supplied CA hinges and gas engines.

Give them time they will fail. Do not give me the installed properly line. All the people I have seen them fail on have between 20 and 40 years experience each. They will either pull out over time or split. I have personally seen them fail on a Patty Wagstaff, Two Giant Sticks and a PT-17. If you are flying glow fine. Otherwise I recommend everyone to change them.

An anecdotal declaration does not equate to either accuracy nor the statement of fact, no matter how many times it is repeated.
We've been here before on other threads where you declared the same thing a couple of years ago...
Guess what? No failures... and much time HAS passed.

The comment about all fiber is false. They have a plastic core like the others. Go shave one and see.

Hold that thought for a few years.
When one finally does fail I promise to let you know... in the mean time we'll still be flying over a hundred flights A DAY.

RE: Great Planes Giant Ugly Stick
I did not intend to start a feud - I simply had a catostrophic failure of CA hinges on one of my ailerons installed on a Hanger 9 150 size P-47. I used the CA hinges supplied with the kit but they did not hold up. I only had a few flights on the plane which was powered by a 40 CC gas engine. I was able to keep the plane in the air for awhile after the failure but could not hold on to it on landing resulting in total destruction of the plane, engine and some of the radio componets. I have also had the smaller Dubro Hinges fail on a larger plane. To each their own but after a very expensive lesson using CA hinges on a larger airplane, I will use other type hinges.
Best wishes and good safe flying.

No feud. If he doesn't want to listen that many people have had failures all over the world then fine. He has only been flying it a short time. I have seen some of them go a couple years before they start to fail, but they will fail. With smaller engines like DLE 20's etc they will tend to last longer.

Mine used to have a g23, then a g26. Now (years later) a 1.6 electric on 7 to 9 cells. With 9 cells, it is a insane fun, a real blast. You take off normally, and then climb vertically as fast as you want all the way until I can barely see it. I love it again... A real blast. The wing is so big it does not matter if I use 6, 7, 8 or 9 cells, it will slow down like a champ for landing. A G-20 might be great to taxi around:-)
Good luck, it is blast

Good to see we are back on track, got a little "un-hinged" there for a moment! Anyway, finally got a new camera and will be able to post some pics soon of my version of this bird, now that its just about done anyway.

So move the mains forward and mount the steered wheel in the rear. Where it belongs.
All sticks should be tail draggers.

This isn't directed at you, Ron, or anyone else in particular. Relax, I'm not giving anyone a hard time.
I too have a Giant Ugly Stik, NIB, that has been waiting for my attention for a while and I too thought about converting to using tricycle landing gear. Then I remembered how my tricycle, shoulder wing equipped models, always blew over when turning to taxi down wind. The conventional gear equipped models do not display this behavior. At $20 (nearly) for a new prop on this size of model, I think I'll stick with conventional gear, which I mastered decades ago.
I have a NIB Zenoah G23 and NIB G26 (the latter is a Cunningham Lite version) that would be available for this model. I might go with the G23, just to avoid having to charge the ignition battery. Gettin' old here and remembering everything that is needed to be done before going flying can be tough.

RE: Great Planes Giant Ugly Stick
On a similar plane, I had an Ultra Stick 120 lite with a DLE-30, and all the CA hinges sheared eventually. First, the rudder ripped out, then the elevator, then the ailerons, now that a friend has it, they are all Robart pin hinges. This was on a 12 pound plane with 20 pounds of thrust, but it gets flown like a 3D plane (pop tops, high speed "walls" to hover, etc.) If I were to do one again, it would have the Robart hinges from day one, CA hinges should not be used on anything bigger than a 48 inch electric as far as I am concerned.
As far as a G20 goes on a 15 pound GP Stick, that would be maybe 10 pounds of thrust, which would fly, but it would be pretty dull.

G-38 cup mount. 3/4 standoff. Alot of tail weight.

Do you need the standoffs? I added standoffs to an electric version in order to move the weight further out and make it a bit more nose heavy. Can you mount the G-38 directly on the firewall?

No, A 20cc is not enough. This thing is heavy. Just go with a G38. Replace all stock hinges with robart hinges. In the end you will have one fun plane.
