From what I have been reading here. Guys have been using dle 55 with no weight or very little weight added as ballast. Total weight of that setup is somewhere around 3.5 lbs. you may need to add a substantial amount of weight in the tail to put it on there. What engine is it and how much power does it produce?

Stock tank is plenty!! Mine was great with the DLE40cc

The stick has a pretty big wing, but that is a lot of lbs. Perhaps if you shortened the nose, or at least pulled it in as close to the firewall as you can you would be OK -ish. You would have to beef up everything, esp. the gear (even consider replacing all together) as they will bend out just sitting with that much weight. For a test bed, I would say its at the outer limit, and it wouldn't be the funnest stick to fly, and no yanking and banking as the wing would likely taco-up on you. I would guess it could huff it around, but its also kind of hard to say not "seeing it" or knowing what motor you have. Would have to mount everything as far back as you could, and perhaps a smaller tank (but I don't know how thirsty that radial is either)? What about a bigger stick, like an AMR, 100"-ish wing if I recall. Its easy to armchair and say "go for it" but thats a lot of dough ($) stapled to the nose, I'm curious to see what others think. (the dle 55 works, but its likely less then 1/2 the wt.)

Its a Saito 325r5 53cc and normally would use a 20x8 prop. I don't know what kind of power it makes. I was going to try proping it down to maybe 18x6. That's part of the testing I was planing on doing with the big stick.

I had both a 52 and a 44 twin (both gas) and they both used 20" props, with 5" wheels there is plenty of room. My twin was likely about 4.5 lbs and it was fine, if that helps. I still cant stress enough that you will need to address the flex/weakness in the gear.

Thanks for the feedback. Can you give me the firewall dimensions? I want to be sure the engine mount will fit. Did you replace the stock gear? If so what are you using?

Alas, this bird has reverted back to its kit stage after an unfortunate incident, so I cant give you the firewall size, but I did use the stock gear and fashioned some struts using 440 and springs from ACE hardware. The pics will explain better then I can, just make sure you get STIFF springs, I bought two strengths and ended up needing the strongest ones.

I have used a leaf style pull pull tailwheel and then put a double horn on the factory tail wheel wire where it exits the fuselage on the bottom. It works rather well.

Here are a few examples with the first being my choice:

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXEGCT&P=7

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXYXH5&P=7

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXCPLJ&P=7

The trick is having enough of a piece of wire left sticking out the bottom to get a double horn onto to control the steering. I am assuming yours broke off like they usually do after a while. A friend of mine used his and just left the tailwheel to swivel on it's own and it worked fine steering with the rudder. We fly off of grass, not sure how well it would work on pavement and it is a challenge with a strong cross wind.

I have not built my plane yet as I am just getting out of the hospital for a hip replacement. I am taking a few day off from the hobby until I can get back down to th3 shop. I may use a separate servo to control the tailwheel..assy or just let it freewheel. I have a freewheel setup on my katana and it works great.
What is final flying weight for this plane?

If you haven't built it yet you are laughing. Just cut off the tailwheel wire about a 1/4" or so below the nylon insert and you will have a stub to attach a double arm using a set screw. Then the two springs from the tailwheel kit attach to it and you will have steering and have a good quality tailwheel set up that will last as long as the plane.

My current plane is around 13 pounds even with a DA35.

Good to hear. I was going with DA-50 then changed mind and switched to DA-35. What propeller and exhaust are you using? Thanks

what is the correct CG for this plane. I have read anywhere from 5 7/8 " to 7" manual says 5 7/8" but one member I know is using CG of 7". I have mine set a 6 1/2" and flies well. what are some of you using?

I use 7 1/2" for the C.G.

I also have the flaps and ailerons all on separate channels and the plane set up as a "sailplane" on my DX18.

This gives me automatic Crow, reflex, differential mixing and snap regular and inverted snap flaps.

If you put the servos in the rear around 26 ounces. That is why I modified my last one and moved the rudder servo up under the wing. My next one will have both the rudder and elevator servos under the wing.
