Goldberg Yak 54 Engine choice
I just ordered the Goldberg Yak 54 and was wondering if anyone who has flown one yet has a suggestion on which engine to use. I wonder if a Saito 1.80 would be enough to give it 3D capability. Other choices I might be an OS 1.40 two-stroke or a Moki 1.8 or even a 2.10 Thanks

I'd go with a little more oomph that the Saito 180. The Brison 2.4 flies the plane GREAT, turning a 20x8 at about 7200 RPM. This is roughly equivalent to a Moki 1.80 which would also be a good choice. These would both be great 3D choices depending on whether you wanted to go glow or gas.

If I was going to stay with a glow engine, I would go with the Saito 220 4 stroke, or the Moki 2.10 2 stroke. But, by the time you pay for the big Saito, you could by a nice gas motor for it. The Moki is probably the best bang for the buck. I'd definitely consider a gasser on this plane, though.

Well, whatever comes of it, I've got the Saito 1.80 sitting on the table here, and hopefully we'll find out what happens with that engine on the Yak 54 come this weekend. I'm still building(er, assembling)....

the ZDZ 50 is a great engine, but it really is too big for this plane. It weighs about the same as a DA 50, which is a pound more than the Brison 2.4 (all up weight, including muffler, ignition, and battery).
**RCU-proof flame suit engaged...**
Also look at the OS 1.60, Moki/Mark 1.8 or 2.1. The big Saitos are great too. The Brison will be almost 1# heavier than the Saito 2.20, and the ZDZ/DA about 1# more. The OS 1.60 should be 5 oz or so lighter than the Saito, with the 1.40 shaving another 6 oz off the 1.6.
Bob Pastorello has some good information about this plane on his website, [link=http://www.rcaerobats.net/CG-Yak/Yak_Main.htm]HERE[/link], and also here on RCU.
He went with the Brison.
Good luck! This will be a fun plane. If you keep it under 15# it should fly quite nicely.

phuffstatler, did you ever get a flight on the yak with the Saito 180? If so how did it power the Yak?
I'm kind of in the same situation, I've got the plane sitting in the box and a brand new YS 140fz that I was planning to put on the plane but after reading a lot in these forums, I'm thinking it won't be enough power for the Yak.

Skip, I have the plane with a Saito 1.50 & it flies it just FINE. Hover, blenders, Harrier, you name it. Originally had a OS 1.60 in it, the 4 stroke is smooter. A 1.80 would be the bomb in this plane.

Can any of you guys who own this plane tell me the RIGHT wing area of it. In some ads it's listed as 1400+ and in other ads ( including the CGB website ) it's listed as 1100+. Which is it ?????
What would you think of a Saito 270 in it, I have one laying around.

RE: Goldberg Yak 54 Engine choice
I second the Brison 2.4 !!
I had one in a Sig Extra 300XS and WOW ! Gary (the owner) at Brison is a good guy and he really goes to great lengths to make sure you are happy. His engines just purr too ! From the small 2.4 to the 6.4 twin, all are fantastic engines.
I have been wanting to look closer at the RCShowcase offerings though (ZDZ and RCS) but you will not go wrong with the Brison.
I hooked the Extra to a digital fish scale and got a steady 22lbs with a Mejzlik 20 x 10 CF prop. If that isnt close to 1.75:1 then the CG is just too heavy.
Hope this helps you.

I'm not positive, but, I think its the 1100" #. Just from looking at similar models they are all in that range. The 84 / 85" models seem to be in the 1400 +/- Range.
Saito 220 or DA 50????? Do you think the DA50 will tear the plane apart????
