RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
Well,
I went to SSeward's LHS last night and was able to get them to put the DVD with the staggerwing in. I did look nice, as SSeward described. No specs were given other than it is 160 size. Fiberglass fuse, concealed linkages on the tail feathers, retract option (doors could be a scrape point), Red with Black trim.
Also on the DVD was a G3 Add on volume 1 with the Matt Chapman Cap on it...if anyone is interested.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I just got this response from someone "in the know" at Top Flite:
Question: "What happened to the Staggerwing ad on the tower web site? Is that one being delayed also? "
"The product is not delayed. This product is not going to delivery until this summer and the information was never to
have been released on the website. The fact that it was was a mistake so it was taken off the website.".

To say it another way:
"The product is not delayed. "
"This product is not going to delivery until this summer and the information was never to
have been released on the website."
"The fact that it was was a mistake so it was taken off the website."
BTW: All the systems I use here do not show the advertisement any more.

No, I was able to pull it up also.
No biggie either way.
Dick, you didn't happen to get any information about the mystical Top Flite P-47 GS did you? I have been wondering about it since it was mentioned in Frank Tianos column in RC report over a year ago. But have never seen anything official about it.
Just wondering ...particularly since the H-9 is due out soon.

I'm not surprised about the delay....happens all the time. Besides, gives me more time to convince the procurement office (my wife) that I need another plane! The video is still running at the LHS anyway!

BTW, when I was talking to the folks at Hobby Hanger here in N VA this afternoon, they pointed out something I hadn't thought of. Looks like the engine being used in the video is a 1.6 2-stroke. If that's true, don't know how the FT-160 would be big enough. Guess we'll just have to wait for more details.

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
Tower has added the basic specs of the Staggerwing to their Website. 72.5" wingspan and a weight of 17 - 19 pounds. They are saying to use a 1.60 2 C or a 1.60 4 C engine. I am assuming that the OS 1.60 4 stroke will fit in the cowl. We will have to see if a Saito 1.80 will fit. Flaps and standard wire landing gear are standard. The Robart retracts will be available with operating tail wheel doors. 8 - 9 chaneel radio required.

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
I was at the Toledo show yesterday and got a couple picks of the Staggerwing. The Top Flite rep said the fuse is painted fiberglass and the wings are built up wood and monocoted. Plane weight is 17 lbs and flew great with a 1.60 2C motor (probably OS 160FX).
Retracts also looked real good. I think he said you have a fixed gear options also. June release is still planned.

OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY, My favorite, a Staggerwing of my very own.
The pics look great.
I am going to have to have one of these babies. Depending on what Mr. Dick Pettit has to say about it of course.
I will not install a glow engine in it though, will have to be gas......Unless it is one of those niffty radial engines by Saito.
The price of those things makes my wallet squeal though.
Can hardly wait for this thing to hit the shelves, IMHO the most beautiful aircraft ever built.

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
I looked at the Staggerwing at Toledo, too. I talked with the guy that test flew the two prototypes. He said that the 1.60 2 cycle was almost too much power. The 1.60 4 cycle is OK, but could use more power. I asked about a gas or Saito 180. He said that there isn't enough room between the firewall and the front of the cowl for a gasser. A 180 might be OK, but he did not know if you would have to cut the cowl.
The Robart guy said that the final design for the retracts was in his office. They just had to make them. The rear retract will open and close the tail wheel doors.
Some of the "fit and finish" could have been better, but the display was a prototype. Hopefully, the production planes will be better.
The plan is till for mid to late June.

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
Just checked w/ Tower on the status of my backorder. They said "late June" for release and shipping. The Robart retracts are available now, though, so I went ahead and ordered a set. Will be here next week. I saw the retracts at Toledo, and they are a real piece of work.
Can't wait for everything to get here.

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
Not enough room to mount a gasser huh? What was the wing span on this baby? I thought it was going to be a rather large plane.
Like in the 70" range.
If not then I might have to reconsider, or save the pennies for a radial.
