I have talked to Top Flite and received the cowl dimensions.
The distance from the firewall to the front of the drive washer needs
to be 6". There may be a 1/4" tolerence forward or back if needed.
The
inside cowl diameter is 8-1/2" at its smallest diameter (close to the
front of the cowl ring) and 9" at the widest.

Thanks for the measurements! Now I'll be able to a get a solid idea as to what engine I have that has the best chance to fit.
That's not too bad. It's around the same size as the KMP Beaver. The Beaver cowl had a scoop on the bottom hiding the spark plug lead .
Time to brainstorm
keep cool guys

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
I'm looking forward to it myself! I emailed Topflite about the tailwheel info and possible ship date .
I was told:
" The date that I have is 8/11/06. I can not say if the date will change or not. If it does change Tower Hobbies will update the information."
And on the tail wheel info:
"On our prototype the tail wheel that we used is the #121 (ROBQ2210). The servo that we used is the FUTM0035 it is a car servo but it works nicely. If you do not want to use the same servo be sure that it has at least 90 oz of torque.
The main gear is ROBQ0536 and the air vale kit is ROBQ2302."
I hope this helps. I have the mains and air tank kit from Tower. I could not find any retract tailwheel information until I emailed Topflite.
When I spoke to Robart they stated they shipped the entire run of Mains to Tower.

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
Da*m!
This is the second ARF that I really want --the first being the H9 large P47 -- that I've gone through this with! Da*n! Da*n!
Oh well, at least the delay -- hopefully this will be the only one -- will let me get some of the stuff I'm working on off the bench.
The reason for the delay? To make the delivered product even better? Hope so.

Looks like we'll all be waiting a little longer, folks.
The Tower web site said "mid-August" this morning and right after lunch it said "Late September".
Now, lets all speculate on the reason for the delay.
Bummer!

We can all wait until Tower is ready, or we can pool our money and buy this one now!

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
[8D] I have been looking at that Staggerwing on eBay for a few weeks now. Sweet! If I save my lunch money, how many lunches... (not sure my calculator can handle that number)
I don't mind waiting... gives me time to get my retracts done. Doug at LADO-tech is making electric actuators that will be retrofitted to the Robart mains doing away with the air lines, tank and valve. Very cool product without the sometimes leaky neumatic plumbing. Take a look at http://www.lado-tech.com/

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
Got a message from my local dealer that the Staggerwing won`t be delivered until close to Christmas.
But this is in Norway so lets hope this isn`t the reality.

I called Tower this morning to check on my backorder. The lady said that they're still scheduled in for early October. We'll see.....

That doesn't make sense... you are closer to the North Pole and Santa should be able to deliver to you faster.

According to Don Anderson at Great Planes, at the IMS Show last week, the Staggerwing will be red with black trim.
It is designed for a 120 sized 4 cycle or a 160 sized twin four cycle.
And look for it in April. Maybe at the Toledo show on display.
The OS 160 twin fits in the cowl, so maybe a Saito 3 cylinder will fit too.
The OS 5 cylinder is "...much too big, size and power-wise..." according to Great Planes also.

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
I'm not sure a Staggerwing would be a good second plane. Is the Cub your first plane and what size is it? I have some experience with biplanes and they are typically heavier and need to carry a significant amount of power in flight especially when landing. A biplane, and expecially a round cowl biplane, will have a lot more drag than the Cub you are used to flying. It will slow down quickly and not float like a flat bottom winged monoplane. The Staggerwing is a beauty and I bet it will be a good flyer (I'm going to get one ) but get some more experience under your belt before attempting this type of aircraft. It will save you some frustration and money.

RE: Top Flite Staggerwing
I have flown several flavors and sizes of Sukhois as well. Others may have differing opinions but I would say that might be a little much as well. Keep in mind that I don't fully know your flying capabilities so I'm generalizing here based on my 20 years of experience. The Sukhoi is a lot different than a Cub and because of it's built in aerobatic capabilities it could be a handful for a less experienced pilot. They are however a blast to fly when you are ready!
As a second plane I would try a less aerobatic (read more stable) low wing plane or maybe an aerobatic high wing plane. If you really want to try the Sukhoi make sure you have your control rates set VERY low and balance carefully so that there is no way in heck you are tail heavy. Like I said... not knowing how you are doing with the Cub and your setup one can't really tell how ready you are for something different. My second plane was a Decathlon and that was a super smooth transition. From there I started flying biplanes (Pitts and WACO... see my gallery) and Sukhois and didn't have a problem. Do a search for second planes and see what else you can dig up. I'm just one voice and there are more options and opinions out there. [8D]
