HARMON ROCKET

RE: HARMON ROCKET
I must have gotten the bad one of the batch. It was a brick. Evo 46 and 11x7 prop would make it fly, and it would move right along. You just didn't want to deadstick. If you didn't have 80 - 100 ft altitude, you could not recover from a stall in one piece. After about 8 flights I got rid of the stock landing gear, mine were very soft. The plane seemed to be very influenced by crosswinds, putting me in some real precarious situations, I never did crash it though. I decommissioned it before I could break it.

RE: HARMON ROCKET
bingo field,
What did you use for landing gear when you replaced the stock gear. Did you find something that fit right in? I have a feeling I may have to change mine out sooner or later.
Sorry to hear that yours was a brick. There is a whole lot of fuse to this plane with just a small amount of wing. I notice mine falls pretty quick. It seems like it will float forever though. Maybe the incidence of the wing on yours was off or something. I have gotten a bad plane or to in the past as well. Good thing to just get rid of those.

I used this Hangar 9 gear set. Check the inside / most center screws on your gear frequently, I finally used a dab of RTV on the underside of the head of the screws to keep the screw from backing out. Try to remember to keep the axles as close to the LE as you can, too far forward will make it want to ground loop....

dirtmagnet, drive down to Sherwood or MARCS field in North Little Rock sometime and we can race Rockets. Mine only has a .46 in it and people are always commenting on it's speed. I bet it screams with the .61. I have a new .52 I'm thinking about installing.

Hey Guys,
Glad to see the interest in the thread again. I am enjoying the Harmon Rocket with the .61. I did change out the landing gear to the Hanger 9 gear recommended. I also reinforced the horizontal stabilizer. It is flying good and lives up to its name.

RE: HARMON ROCKET
Hi all,
got the FA-80GK put in, god does it look sexy in there! While I had no engine in I took a couple of pics of the modified engine mount for anyone who's interested. the pipe going through the bottom arm is the crankcase breather which exits the bottom of the cowl. n.b. the radius cut to avoid a weak point.

RE: HARMON ROCKET
Cool picture Dave. You should post a couple more of the engine after it is installed. I have got many flight on my Harmon Rocket now, and I did add the horizontal stabilizer support just to make sure I don't have any problems.
Maybe it is just me, but I have a heck of a time landing this plane in any kind of a crosswind. My 60 Mustang just floats in as nice as can be, and my Funatana and Twist land like trainers with their low wing loading. I still find that the Rocket is squirelly on the approach and at low speeds.
I will say that it is the fastest plane in my fleet with a OS .61fx and a 12x8 prop. It is also one of the best looking planes. I wish it handled a little better. I guess it is just the nature of the beast.

RE: HARMON ROCKET
Hi again,
well here's a picture of the engine in.....
about half way through second tank of running in.
Dave :^)
Railinrob, never needed to even think about a bigger tank, the saito's I use don't need more than a sniff of the fuel. the FA-65 I had in would squeeze 25 mins from the stock tank with ease! i don't like thirsty two strokes :^p

RE: HARMON ROCKET
Thanks for the input fellas.I couldn't see long flights out of the stock tank with the sa-100 in it. I happen to have a dubro 12 oz so I'm in luck. This thing should move pretty good with the saito in it.

RE: HARMON ROCKET
Could anyone post pictures of how you added support to the rear stabilizer? I just got this plane and want to make all neccacery modifications to it before I maiden it! thanks for any advice! I have the landing gear on order..also has anyone added a smoke system to this plane? I intend to install a saito .82 4 stroke with a smoke system if applicable.

RE: HARMON ROCKET
You can also use the airfoil shaped aluminum tubing that's in the brass/aluminum tubing rack at most decent LHSs.
It's dead simple and takes no time at all. Cut to length. Flatten the ends. Bend to fit. Drill holes in the flat sections. Glue and screw (or bolt) and you're not only done, but you've not added much weight and have added less drag. (An airfoiled "wire" can be about 10X larger than a round "wire" before it creates equal drag.)
