Default World Models Fun Fly 3D 1.20

Has anyone seen this model yet? My US 40 was lost in a mid-air and I need a replacement. The Fun Fly 3D has the flaps and ailerons like an US 40 and since I have a YS 1.20 NC that needs a home this seems like a better replacement...

I'm keeping a close eye on this one too, but AFAIK Airborne Models don't have any to ship yet.

I know that these are available now... Has anyone seen one? I am seriously thinking of getting one, but would like to know a little more. I am especially interested in learning if the gear really is wire...

The LHS here has one but I didn't take a look at it. Picture on the box shows wire gear. Problem with this plane is what engine? My RCS 1.4 would fly it fine but at 9.5 lbs it probably would not fly 3D that well. I'm looking for something 3D ARF size for my BME 44. Well at least I can tell ya there available.

Did it come standard with the aluminum gear, or did you retrofit?

I am very interested in this one also!
This looks like my type of plane.
I am interested if the RCS 140 would fit under the cowl.

Jim if you get one let me know what you think.

Steve from York.

Although the review plane will have a Saito 1.20, I will also check out the RCS 1.44 for you to see how well it fits. If the cowl on the FW 3D is the same size as the Super Sportster Senior, then the RCS will fit just fine.

Here's a link to my post about the SSS and it has pics of the RCS engine mounted.

Jim, I can't wait for your review. I am very interested in this one. I know WM typically under-rate their engine recommendations. I have no doubt the Saito 1.20 will fly it just fine, but at the claimed 9.5lbs I am not sure it will live up to the 3D namesake. My modified Super Stunt 60 weighs right around 10.5 lbs with a Magnum 1.20 (9000rpm with APC 16x6). It flies well but can definitely use more power, so it's currently back in the workshop to swap in a TT Pro120RP with tuned pipe.

I should have the plane this week and will weigh all of the components and post the results here. The other thing to consider with the plane is the huge amount of wing area that it has. That won't help when pulling out of a hover, but will with stunts like flat spons and flying slow maneuvers close to the ground.

I'm on pins and needles.

Earl: I'm going to be really curious to see how the YS pulls this bird around. Of course the YS is a stump puller anyway.

What does the YS weigh with muffler??

Default World Models Fun Fly 3D 1.20

Well I got the Fun World 3D yesterday and i must say that it looks great! It seems very light, but until I weigh it, I won't be able to tell for sure.

The cowl is the same height as my Super Sports Senior, but 3/8" narrower, (is that a word?).

I currently have an RCS 1.44 in the SSS, but am not sure if it is a good choice for the Fun World 3D. I alread have the "before build" weights posted for my SSS, see:

http://www.rcuniverse.com/showthread...52&forumid=142

I will weigh the finished SSS and then the components of the FW3D. This, with a little math should give me an idea of what the the finished weight should be with the RCS 1.44.

Jim,
I am ready to order the Fun World 3D if the RCS 140 will work.
I am anxiously waiting to hear if it will work!!!
What servos do you plan to use in the Fun World 3D?

Thanks Steve

On the servos, I'm not too sure yet. I will want to use something with at least 70-80 oz of torque. I have some Futaba 9202s around that are coreless and should work well. I also have some Hitec digitals that I may use on the tail.

I saw a really neat control setup for the tail at Giant Scale Airplanes:

Check this out:

It's a .50 sized Giles that they have. I thought the idea was very cool.

Looks like the servo can't travel over 30 degrees each way. Does that mean rudder doesn't move over 30 degrees if same leverage is kept on both sides of the cable?

I just had my LHS place an order on FW3D for me. I have an Enya 1.55 4-stroke that I think will finally have a suitable home. Coule this plane be the cause of Ultra Stick 120's discontinuation? Lighter, more wing area, larger surfaces,...

I would guess that is true. It will be fun to see how much travel the control arm will have. Of course, your amount of control surface travel is related to where on the control horn you attach your control rod. Farther in, and more travel. Of course, the farther in, the more torque it requires to move the surface.

Looks like a little hobby knife action would be in order though...

Jim,
Why do you say the RCS 140 may not be a good motor for this plane?

I don't want to mislead and say that the RCS will not work in this plane, just that it MAY not work as a 3D engine based on the final weight of the airplane. If the plane comes out over 9.5-10 pounds with the RCS, then it may not be enough to hover it, or pull out of a hover with any kind of authority.

With the SSS, that is not a problem as it is not a 3D plane anyway and the RCS is pleanty of engine for it. Too heavy with any 3D plane and it becomes a detrement to it's performance.

I did some weight comparisons

When got the SSS, I weighed it before I started to build it, and it came out to 6.5lbs (no engine or electronics)

I weighed the SSS tonight with everything and it came out to 10.0lbs

10.0
6.5 minus
--------------
3.5 RCS 1.44, servos, Rcvr, batteries and other stuff.

The FW3D parts come out to be around 6.75 lbs. Add the 3.5lbs to that and the weight comes up to 10.25lb. With the wing area, this is VERY light wing loading, but the RCS may not provide the vertical performance that you are looking for with 3D.

I think some of the other guys that fly the RCS may have a better idea of what that engine will pull around as far as weight.

I prefer gas over glow whenever possible, so I will be curious as to how you like the plane with the RCS 1.44.

Let me say this. There are a few guys flying 11-12 pound Caps with the 1.44. They do not have the vertical authority of a Saito 1.8, or OS 1.6, but they have a blast with them.

Jim!

Jim,
Will the RCS 140 fit in the cowl?
At this time I am not worried about hovering.
