Modeltech Sukhoi 60-size - 9.6 lb!!?
Hi there, my Sukhoi SU29 ARC from Modeltech seems quite heavy: 9.55 lbs, and with a winspan of 61" the load per areal is huge (100 g/dm2 = 33 oz/sq.ft)
Its loaded with an YS91AC, 6 standard servoes, covered with thin glass, and painted.
What is the typical weight of this Sukhoi 60-size from Modeltech? (It doesnt say in the manual, or elsewere at the internet.)

thanks, through your link I found a SU29 with (I think) 61 inch span. There seems to be two 60-size SU29: 67 inch and 61 inch, with the same 644 sq inch wing, and the same fuselage. Mine is 61 inch.

I have one in the office right in front of me...6.5lb. Careful with the CG on your aeroplane...it's a bit(?????) on the heavy side.

Modeltech Sukhoi 60-size - 9.6 lb!!?
Waow - 6.5 lb seems artificial - Is it a hangglider
I wonder what happend at Model Tech, as they made my model. I found a link to a 8 lb: http://home.flash.net/~jecramer/sukhoi.htm , beeing close to the "lightest MT Sukhoi in the USA"
The same preview is wrongly beeing correctet to 67 inch span at: http://webpages.charter.net/rcfu/Kit...MTSukhoi2.html
Hence, my SU29 is "only" 1.6 lb heavyer than a his.
I find it difficult to reduce weight by now without reducing the motor power. The YS91AC (28 oz w. muffler) is not much havier than a 90'er 2S (OSFX91 is 19.4oz + muffler). I have 2 wing servoes, and 2 elevator servoes, beeing standard servoes, this gives additional 2.8 oz.

The 67" wingspan is a misprint. The correct dimension is 61".
Mine came out about 10 pounds, with a Saito 1.20
The wing loading was high, but that was ok with me because I wanted it as a step up before moving to a Mustang.
You need to be careful about tip stalls during takeoff and landing.
Don't yank it off the deck-- fly it off. Don't get too slow on landings-- land on the mains, don't try to three-point it.
Here's what mine looked like:
http://users.bestweb.net/~lieber/flying/sukhoi.htm
I had many good flights but made the mistake of taking off in a cross wind with rudder->elevator mix turned on: I gave it right rudder to counteract the wind and it took off prematurely, resulting in a nice 0-altitude snap roll.

Modeltech Sukoi Cowl
Mine had a Y.S. 91. Flew absolutely fantastic at 10 lbs. One of the best rolling circle planes I have flown. Just wanted to know if you want a brand new unpainted fiberglass cowl for the sukoi. I had an extra I did not need. E-mail me direct if interested.

Derek, I was wondering if the 67 inch was a misprint. I found approx. half of the links to 67 inch reveiw/comersials, and half to 61 inch. As long as your model was a 61 inch, I'm glad!
My SU seems to fly exactly as you describe.
The 3 point landing I will take into account. My SU doesnt have any tendency to tipstall, and it really likes to 3 point land, since it lands by it self with nose up.
I see in your nice pictures, that your landing gear was weak as mine. It looks as if you mounted piano rod for strengthen? Or is it an alu-bar?
"Zero level snaps", I'll avoid that cross wind take off
hi Will, I suppose your SU29 was that the 61 inch span version to?
It seems like my SU29 is'nt unique heavy after all.
(Cowl: Mine has'nt been used yet, and I dont expect to make any damaging groundcontact. Thanks for the offer, though )

Modeltech Sukhoi 60-size - 9.6 lb!!?
i see modeltech planes at the field and haven't seen a light one yet. some of our newbies are trying the 40size stick they make and they are little lead sleds. looks like 3-4 per month are drilled in at our field. guys are trying to overcome the weight problem with hanging 46's on the front. wings folding up in flight, control surfaces ripping off seems to be the ticket of the day.

I too have a Modeltech Sukhoi Su29 60 size, i power mine with a K&B 1.00 aero 2-stroke with perry pump. Radio gear is all JR with two servos on ailerons, 2 servos on elevator and one servo on a pull-pull system for the rudder. This plane flys true and straight, my first ARC type project. After some radio trouble it knife edged into the ground, it is now rebuilt but now as a single seat version (SU31).
Here is a link to some photos... enjoy

Sukhoi SU-29 Modeltech
Well.... First flight of the season last April, I lost radio control
with my Modeltech Sukhoi. Started barrel rolling by itself above
sometrees on the East end of our field. Anyway, my father is
getting it back together. Looks good actually. Rebuilt the front
fuse. Wow... How cheap these ARFS are built ! He is fiber-
glassing a new Cowl, but I would like to get the original.
A canopy as well. If anyone has an extra, let me know. Other-
wise we will be flying a cross between an AT6 Sukhoi.

Thanks

My Modeltech SU-29
I owned a Modeltech Sukhoi SU-29 ARC. I built it stock right out of the box without changing any hardware and used standard servos. I started out with an OS 80 2 stroke. It flew nice, but the engine was not very dependable. I got very tired of dead stick landings, so I replaced the engine with an OS 91 Surpass. I could not have found a better combination anywhere. I used a Master Airscrew Scimitar 13X8 nylon prop. It was equipped with on-board glow and it weighed in right at 9.5 lbs. I flew the daylights out of it for about 2 1/2 years until I met up with receiver failure one day. The Modeltech SU-29 will always be in my Top 3 Favorites of any planes ever owned or flown. I don't think I ever found any bad habits. Takeoff roll was nice and easy and landings were not a problem. IT WAS AWESOME!! I have attached a photo

GIJons Picture
I e-mailed Wilh on the extra Cowl. Thank You.
Also, GIJon. That picture was exactly my plane
before I lost my Receiver. Thanks for the nostalgia!

OS 70 4S, I think its possible, but not funny.
My YS91 4S has approx 2 HP, while your 70 4S has approx 1 HP. I go vertical, and you would go 30-45 degrees (depending on everything)
Be sure to avoid lead/ballast in the nose, your motor is light, do take advantages of that.

The Sukhoi is now a HELLDIVER (kind of)........
My Father finally finished it, other than painting the pilots
and some of the detailing. Thought you guys might get a
kick out of this.
What was the same Sukhoi this thread has been talking
about is now somewhat of a HELLDIVER.
Note: My Father also added flaps and a smoke pump.
It is driven by an O.S. 61 SF with pump with a dry weight
of 9.96 lbs. He is spinning a 3 bladed 12x6 prop.
Does this sound do-able? Please !! Any information would
be great to hear.
Also.... WillH. My Father molded a new cowl to fit the new
structure. Thank you for your replying on yours for sale.
You never know, we just might need it in the future if this
doesn't work.
Please Guys... let me know all thoughts on this new build!
Heres the pic.

RE: Modeltech Sukhoi 60-size - 9.6 lb!!?
Where can I get a cowl for the SU-29? I need one after this weekend. I snapped mine on final after spending many hours recovering and updating it. Thanks!
