Ultra Stick 60 with Saito 72
Has anyone else set up an Ultra Stick Lite 60 with a Saito 72?
I searched the forums and didn't find anything. I'm curious as to what experiences you might be having if you are.
I got a good deal on a US 60 at the LHS and not wanting to spring for a Saito 91 or 100, I thought I'd put in either an 80 or a 72 that I already had. I opted for the 72 thinking that as a newer design it may be peppier.
I'm set up with Quad Flaps.
I've had about a half dozen flights so far and am pleasantly surprised. The airplane doesn't feel underpowered at all. It hops off the ground in about 10-15 feet, has solid climb, and with some inertia has a good vertical - not by any means unlimited, but a good 150 foot upline with no apparent loss of momentum on stall turns until I cut throttle.
It will knife edge, but the plane has a strong coupling toward the top side of the fuse.
I did have to hunt down a smaller engine mount because the bolt spacing on the firewall is too wide for the 72. I went with a Dave Brown mount.
So far I'm quite pleased with the result. It's introducing me to more complex radio functions - I got an 8103 in order to take advantage of the quad flaps. I guess I can say I'm using it as an advanced trainer for complex aircraft.
If anyone is considering this plane and is wavering because of lack of a bigger motor, I can say that the Saito 72 can do the job, provided you aren't expecting 3D performance.
Again, this is the Lite version of the plane, I'm not sure if Hangar 9 ever did a "regular" version of this one like they did with the 40 and 120 size ships.
Cheers!!!

I had a Saito 82 on my US60 and it flew it great. I too had to move one of the engine mounts for the smaller footprint. I have since replaced the 82 with a Saito 100 and it is a new plane. Unlimited vertical and will pull out of a hover. This is my favorite plane at the moment.

Thanks for the reply.
When you say it's a "new plane," is it only because of the unlimited vertical and hover, or have you felt a difference in the rest of its flight?
Has it changed the feel of it during other maneuvers? What size prop do you have with the 100? Have you found it slows down more with the bigger prop when the engine is cut to idle in flight?
I had some very nice flights with it a couple of days ago and messed around some with the crow at altitude. Faced it into a 10 mph breeze and it stood still. I had to blip throttle every now and again to keep it from dropping out, but crow stops it cold after the initial ballooning.
Next flight I plan on exploring crow onthe vertical downline, but I'll wait for a no-wind day for that. It should be interesting!
Flaps don't seem to do much other than cause a severe pitch-up. Is that your experience as well? I don't see much of a use for them.

I'm using a Saito 100 with a 15x6 APC prop. The feel of the plane has changed quite a bit. It is definitely faster when I want it to be and it just feels more powerful. Maneuvers are quicker and done with more authority. Because of the added weight of the bigger engine and additional lead in the tail (2 oz.), it seems to come in to land a tad faster. Nothing that the crow position doesn't handle with ease. The Saito 82 was more than adequate to fly this plane but overall with the 100, it is the same plane but with a kick. By the way, if you mix in a little down elevator with your crow and flaps position, the ballooning will stop. Then deploy flaps for takeoff and with full throttle, it is startling how vertical it goes almost immediately.

Hey Guys
I have a two stroke 61 on my 60 size ultra stick. I can go vertical after a short take off. My radio does not have crow capablies, but I do use the wind flaps and they do work great. I do have down elevator mixed in when down flaps are deployed. One aspect of using the two stroke engine, I have plenty of ground clearance with my prop and I like to taxi with the tail up.
The ultra stick is my favorite airplane also.

What size prop are you using?
I think I'm running a 13 x 7 or 13 x 8 on my Saito 72. No prop clearance issues there, either. Don't know about taxiing with tail up - this thing takes to the air so slowly I'm afraid it will fly off!
I need to mess with the mixes more. It balloons with both flaps and crow until I get enough down elevator applied. With a little breeze it will just hang up there with crow deployed.

DVI,
What radio do you have? Sounds like a computer radio, when you start talking about mixing elevator and such. If it's at least six channels, then you can definitely use the crow function. Let me know what radio you have, and I'll help you get it set up (if I can).

I think crow can be set up with 6 channels, but you can't set up the flaps to work together with the ailerons. I didn't want to have sloooow rolls, so I hunted down a good deal on a JR 8103 in order to be able to get the full benefit of the quad-flaps. I'm glad I did.
My first couple of flights were with my 6102 and I felt I was wasting a good airplane.

My US40 has a Saito 82 and 13x8 apc prop. I decided to put 2 3/4" tires on it to give a little more clearance. This plane with the 82 is insane! You're gonna love it.

I can relate. I put my Saito .82 on my Four Star 60 just to see what it could do and it seem to pull just like the .91 would. Way better than a .60 size 2 stroker..

I had mounted a saito .65 w/apc 13X6 in my quad flap US 60 and was very surprised at the performance of the plane. After a short take off I could pitch it vertical and it would climb for several hundred feet, not real fast, but it did not run out of steam either.

No, Not a good idea for the Ultra Stick 60. I have owned two Versions of Ultra Stick (.40 & .60), The US .60 climb nice with a .60 size engine and have the better performance with the Saito 100 so definitivily if you go with Saito 72 will be notorious underpowered and will give a bad impression of the performance.
I use the Saito 72 on my US .40 and my plan is to change for more power, possibly the Saito .82, that possibly will give you a clue.

Thanks for the info I just order the Ultra stick 60 ,and the Saito 180, I guess I could use in something else. Would a super tiger 90 be OK for this, also I have a O.S 61 FX in my trainer so maybe I could use that motor? Thank's again for the reply!

On my US60 I used about 15-18% down elevator with crow. I used 12% down with flaps. With the mixes it makes landings a breeze. I almost always used the flaps for landing and used crow on days without too much crosswind. I miss flying mine so much I am getting another engine so I can go back to flying it again.

I'm flying my US60 with a Super Tiger 75 and a Futaba 9 Super. I've got it set up with crow using the 4 flap glider program. This was fairly straight forward to do. This plane is a blast to fly set up this way. It's also set up with flap-elevator and flap-aileron. I can take it to 500 ft, cut the throttle, point it straight down and then bring it in right where I want. The crow increases as the throttle decreases. It will also fly very slowly at a pretty high angle of attack.

I am writing with the hope thatsommeone can assist me with setting up my Ultra Stick 60 for Quad Flaps operations.I recently bought the aircraft and have completed the assembly but don’t know how to configure my Spectrum DX7 transmitter/receiver to get the full benefits of the Quad Flaps. As a result I am now using only ailerons (inner and outer operating together by means of y-jacks). Looking forward to a response.
Thanks
