Weather? Something wrong with your weather? It's 75F down here in Ocala. Trouble is there wasn't any wind either. Oh well. I'll pay for this when I get back home.

Default Standoffs..

Dick - would you mind posting a pic that shows the triangles - I'm not clear on where there are. Thanks!

Flew my H9 Sukhoi this week....one word....AWESOME!!! I promised not to mention his name but the guy who won the TOC this year flew it and would have won any freestyle contest in the world with this airplane. It was simply awesome. Another TOC pilot, who shall also remain nameless, flew it today as well and was blown away by my Sukhoi's precision pattern capabilities. It's truly an awesome airplane...the best I've ever flown.

For those who are curious....

Futaba 9 ZAP WC2
Futaba 309 DPS rx
Futaba 9206's throughout
BME 102
2 2000 mah NiMH batts
Electrodynamics battery bus

22 pounds, 9 ounces RTF.
Tail heavy...no lead

I HIGHLY recommend this airplane...it took two days to build and flies like no other airplane I know.

I had a fellow tell me it was the worst flyer of all the three , 33% H9 models --
The wing is all wrong.
I think he called the wing a Hershey bar -
Odd -I thought a Hershey bar was a rectangle - Oh well-
It was simply all wrong-
So obviously Mike was all wrong and the flying you saw was a figment of your imagination.
Strange how some opinions are formed.
My Sukhoi is still waiting completion -
It sure looks fine to me -- --

Reply to Falcon: Last time I checked it it was about 6800 but the prop is a plain old vanilla Zinger 24x10. There are a couple of extenuating factors: The engine is still pretty new and I am running it somewhat rich. I can tell however that the power level is up and getting stronger each time I fly it because the prop is barking louder at full power. I am planning on putting on my Menz 24x10 pretty soon and seeing what happens. Wally Pitts flew my plane the other day and said it flies more like a pattern ship than the Cap. Seems to think the Cap (h-9) is better for 3D stuff. He won a recent local IMAC intermediate with a h-9 Sukhoi. I think if I had a DA-100 in the plane, it could do anything. It is a very good snapper and can knife edge with no mix with a little help from the pilot. Even with the Zen 80, it has very good vertical ability. I will probably leave the Zen 80 in the plane and save my DA for something else as I do not like to change engines in a plane once I have gone to the trouble of setting it all up. If I put in the DA, I would probably have to go pull/pull on the rudder to keep balance right without adding weight. (The DA is 6 1/2# with muffs and ignition and duralite battery). Right now, with the Zen, it balances at back of wing tube with no added weight. My (2) 1700mah Nicads are just in front of the tube. Of course, there is no battery for the Zen, but it does have the spring starter. Weight is 25.5lbs on my Bass Pro fish scale. NSSHERLOCK.

NSSherlock I was wondering how my BME 76cc would compare to the 80 you have I run a 24-10 Menz standard on it.

Falcon:
I don't know if this helps, but my ZDZ-80 single (J&A Pitts) turns a 24x10 Menz-S at 7,000 rpm.

Any updates on the suhkoi or the ZDZ 100 ?
Looking for DB readings for the 100. Will you be posting any of the suhkoi mods. on your web site?

Thanks

FYI, on the CG change on the sukhoi.

To all who have or are considering getting the Hangar 9 SU-31 Sukhoi:

After receiving several calls saying the model comes out tail heavy, I
rechecked the CG and found that the location indicated in our manual is
incorrect. The correct cg location is 13/16" behind the CENTER of the wing
tube for precision flying, and approximately 1/2" to 3/4" behind that for
all 3D flying.
Balancing at these locations will make the model balance much easier and
should not require any nose weigh unless a very lightweight engine is used.
Balancing any farther forward than the above mentioned CG locations will
result in an is excessively nose heavy model.

Sorry for the confusion on this.

Default First Flight

I flew my Sukhoi for the first time today. Boy was I blew away. a couple clicks of down elevator and couple clicks of right aileron and it was rock solid. My setup is a 3W75ius. 5945 on everything except rudder and that is a 5735 on pull pull . Cg is 1/4" behind
wing tube and plane is rock solid. It performed all the maneuvers
I could do. The 3W will pull it out of a hover with ease, not a rocket but plenty of power to get out of trouble. Only running a 24/10 at 6000 rpm, it's only going to get better. Thanks for reading had to pound my chest a little bit.

Cheers Ralph

I wondered how it would work on a smaller engine - sound great!
A friend has his flying with a DA100 and being a ex TOC winner has an idea as to what is good and bad-- His feeling is that it flys very well--all the stuf including the twirl the tail in the dirt stuff.
Mine is still not in gear -( too many customer projects) and it may take a quick turn from the original course, using the 100 and get a ZDZ80 single -
This is an expedient setup for me -and a friend who wants the plane - wants it setup to swap engines with his other models - both flying with the 80-
I did strip and recover the belly of the model of its sheeting - and the rear tail wood blocks - so the 80 will balance pretty well - The CG went forward 1 inch- not much you may think- but try to shift the cg that far and tell me how much weight you needed to add.
I know -- too much work-----

I flew mine twice today, flights 11 and 12. First flights with smoke system... very cool Just guessed on the TME regulator and it was pouring smoke! Didn't get the plane as oily as I though it would... I'm comforatble enough with landing it now and going to move cg back a little and see what happens.

Flying out of a pretty small field, got it to where I can drop it in and still have runway to spare. Very relaxing compared to helis...

Default ZDZ mounting on Sukhoi

Can anyone post some pics of the ZDZ 80 single on this plane? In particular I would like to know if the motor box needed standoffs, or firewall cutback, or carb behind firewall ect. Wood/alum. standoffs? I have a Sukhoi on the way and have chosen the 80RV. A verbal description would be great too.

How many inches is it from the firewall to the front of the cowl?

jelaird, I used 1.5" standoffs from RCshowcase to mount the ZDZ80. The capscrews are 10-32 x 2.5" with blindnuts behind the firewall. I had to cut the firewall for carb clearance. Also a picture on Chiefaircraft.com.....link below.

Thanks Ray!
Looks like you went for a firewall to spinner backplate dimension of 7.5". I might try 7.75" to save "some" nose lead so I would need 1.75" standoffs I think. Any problems getting your hatch open with the cowl overlap?

Jelaird, your right 7.5" which is the same distance if you use a Zenoah GT80 so everything should work fine. To get 7.75" all I have to do is get (4) 10-32 x 2.75" capscrews and add the 1/4" spacers that came with the standoffs. RCshowcase standoff link below. Hope this helps.

Default Cowl mount distance

With the 3W 100 the distance from the fiewall to front of the Cowling came out at 7 3/8" on mine. CG 1/2" behind wing tube. Awsome flight performance. Hovers just above an Idle, and the easiest plane I have ever torque rolled. Spins the 27X10 at 8,000rpm Hey Mikey I like it I like it!!!!
