Hey Jim, Steve.
Thanks for getting back to me, guys.
Yeah I forgot all about Central Hobbies. I will have to go ahead and purchase a few of them for a couple of different projects.
As for the DA 35 plans, I went to my LHS on Friday and they had a O.S. 33GT in stock and I just couldn't wait for a DA to be delivered.
I was hoping that the stock O.S. pitts muffler would fit within the cowling but, it didn't. Kinda disappointed but not shocked as I referenced
the dimensions online and knew that it would be a close fit.
So off I went to another LHS and bought a JTec pitts muffler, it fits perfectly! Thanks for the info shared here earlier it came in handy.
Included are some pics.
Dave
p.s. Just in case anyone is wondering, the 54 is a vinyl decal that was placed by the planes previous owner. He just never got around to
building it and I was able to buy the plane from him un-assembled.
I kinda like the look but its gotta go due to the airframe changes I'm making.

As you can see the front access panel came off really easily and will provide much better access to the internals when its on its new fuse mounted gear.
I also got inspired once the zona saw was out and removed the rear turtle deck as well.
My plans are to produce an open cockpit style plane just to make it unique, its kinda what I tend to do with my ARF's. lol
The red carboard is a rough outline for what the windscreen will look like and the rear turtle deck formers will be
cut down so that its more in line with how a Ryan STA looks.
I will update things here as I move forward.
thx

One last item, I had the GP Edge 540 gear put in place for the initial glam shot but have decided to use a set
of Graphtec carbon gear I have in my parts drawer instead. The backward sweep on the Edge gear just looks off to me.
If anyone has the GP Giant Stik gear mounted I would really like to know the distance from the gear mount to the axle as
this Graphtec gear is only 7" in that dimension and I'm not sure if its going to be enough.
thx

I have the Giant Stik gear mounted on mine. Can't get to it, though; it's still in a box, in storage. It's a little taller than the gear from the GP Super Stearman, and four inches wider than the GP Super Stearman gear. Look up my posts and you can see how it looks, I have quite a few photos in here. I'll see if I can find the photos. I'm positive it's much taller than 7", though. 9 or 10", if I had to guess.

Hey guys,
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly and for the info.
The pics shared in this thread showing the Stil gear is the look and functionality I'm going for.
So if the GP GS Stik gear @ 7", + or - 1/2" is good for everyone.
The gear I have measure out at 6.5" bottom of the fuse to the axle, so I'm in the ballpark.
thx
Dave

Here's a photo of mine. It may not be any higher than 7". I can fit a 20" prop on it, though. I also use larger wheels, which gives it more clearance and also helps it roll on grass fields.

Yeah that's the profile I'm looking for.
I think I will just go ahead and place an order for the GP Stik gear and a Sportster 3.25" spinner since I didn't receive it
when the plane was dropped off.
That way I'll just leave the carbon stuff for my aerobatic projects, since It kinda looks out of place now that I'm looking at the pics.
Just a couple more questions though, if you don't mind.
Is that the stock spinner? have you been satisfied with it and what since (make/size) of pilot do you have mounted Jim?

Wow, Jim that is the cleanest plane I've ever seen. Mine never looked that good. Of course it is pretty beat up looking right now, after about 40,000 T&G's from a grass/dirt field, it is lucky to be alive. It needs recovering job #3 now.

Thanks, Steve. That photo was taken when it was fairly new. Since then I've taken it out on a slightly overcast day and flew it straight through a near-invisible power line. I rebuilt it after that, and it looks pretty good. You know, no matter how many other planes I have, this GSS will remain my favorite by far. We all crash occasionally, and when it happens to me, I usually just strip the plane and move on to the next model (there are SO many to choose from), but I took the time to rebuilt this bird to like-new condition after the crash. It has such great flying characteristics, and it's not like the plane did anything wrong; I was the fool whose thumbs were on the sticks.
I couldn't bear to part with it. I painstakingly pieced the shattered fuselage back together. and some friends of mine restored the wings. It was worth every minute of work. I guess that's my long away around saying that it looks just about the same right now. But you can ask anybody; when I finish flying, I always clean every inch of my birds, and polish them up until they gleam. It's doubtful that I'll ever put on anywhere near the miles that you do, Steve. I don't think you ever miss an opportunity to fly! It seems like you were just re-covering yours last year.

DLEVETT,
I can't really remember what came with the ARF kit. Usually I buy Tru-Turn spinners, having had some bad luck with many of the other brands. The Tru-Turns are pricey, but they're tough. I can't say for sure which it is, because the spinner that came with my GP Super Stearman was a really good one, and I used it. If GP provided a polished aluminum spinner with this GSS, then I probably would have used it. It has worked well.
The pilot. . . hmmm. I never knew what brand he was. I believe I bought him at a swap meet, and I noticed that he looked a lot like me, so I sculpted him into a mini-me. He's a quarter-scale, at any rate.
I'm a sport flyer, so my impressions of this bird are based on that. It flies beautifully at slow speed, and it's fun and controllable when you put the hammer down and fly aggressively. Probably the best all-around plane I've ever flown.

Hello all,
I just wanted to thank everyone that contributed their ideas, set ups and other thoughts on this thread. I would name names, but there are far to many to list. I started reading this thread over a year ago, and a couple of months ago I took the plunge and ordered a GSS. It took a while to build as I don't get allot of shop time
but after making push rods, doing the gear mod, installing hinge points and all of the other things I had to do, I finally finished it and did the maiden last week. It was a complete success!! There were so many mods on this plane I was wondering if it was even going to fly. I could not have accomplished this without all of the tips and tricks
on this thread. One of the things I love most about this hobby is the brotherhood and the way everyone helps each other. Again, thanks to all!!
My set up:
DLE 30 for power
Hi Tec 645 mg servos
Carbon fiber over 4-40 all thread push rods W/ ball links
Stearman gear
Sllivan HD control horns
Robart 1/8 hinge points, 3/16 on rudder and elevator
I will not bore you with pics because it looks like everyone elses.
If anyone reading this is pondering the GSS, DO IT! You will love the way it flies.

I have a few questions before I begin my build. I will be using a DLE 40 twin for power....
What is the max prop size with stock gear?
What has to be done to mount main gear in front of the wing? I am undecided about using stock gear or aftermarket.
I have decided to definitely install flying wires on the tail.
I am very excited about this project even though I have had several giant scale gas planes before.
Thanks guys

You need to search back through this thread as there are a number of postings including photos detailing how to install main gear in the fuselage.

I do realize that......
Actually I had the engine first... I was looking for an airframe and fell in love with the GSS. I have a throttle and my left thumb works just as well as the right one. I may have to lay up a slightly different cowl, although after some time, thought and holding the engine up to it's destination... I think it will work out fine. it is an extremely smooth running engine and weighs less than the recommended Fuji gas engine. Twins do not have the power singles do so it is actually just a bit more powerful than your 30.... it is about the same as a DLE 35.

The engine will be fine, but it will mean the weight will be a bit heavy in the nose. Definitely use metal gear servos in the tail to offset some of that. Understand that a 20CC gasser will make this bird leap off the ground, and you're about to bolt TWO of them onto it! Mine has a 30CC, and it takes off in about 5 to 10 feet max, so, you get the idea. However, there are other very real considerations with the 40CC twin.
Your engine will require a VERY large propeller, and no way will the stock underwing gear give it enough clearance, not even close. I'd suggest you look at the GP Super Stearman gear; they're pretty tall and a perfect width fit for the fuse, though a bit narrower in total width than I'd like to see. Some of the guys in here have that setup, and they can tell you prop shaft height on theirs.
This is a large bird with a lot of wing, but it's not a HUGE bird. I'd suggest you use your 40CC twin in something like an RC Guys Pitts. That's where I used mine, and it's great. Plenty of height, etc, and the cowl is a perfect fit, as are the cooling holes.
A 20cc to 30CC gasser is more than enough to power the heck out of this bird. A G-23 would be a sweet combo. I know you have that 40CC just sitting there, but this model isn't the answer. It creates a whole lot more questions, I think you'll find. It can be done, but I don't think the bird would be as enjoyable as these GSS's are meant to be.
