RE: New Giant GP Super Sportster!!!!!
I was thinking, [sm=72_72.gif] I didn't really want to add triangle stock to the horizontal stab. There seemed to be a good bit of area to epoxy too but reading this thread got me nervous. Anyway, what I decided to do is drill an 1/8" hole through the fuse T.E. into the horizontal stab. and run a 1/8" dowel in, pinning the stab too the fuse. That should be enough, and I really do think once the vertical stab. is epoxied into place it will be pretty strong.

You did a very nice job! Enjoy... I'm real glad someone else built the SS with these landing gears they really set the aircraft apart from the others.
I'm currently rebuilding my SS with some real big changes, which will give the Super Sport a whole new look and fill. I'll keep you all updated as I make the changes.
You all enjoy the 2010 flying season and keep that balsa overcast flying.
Best regards
Steve Brian

Well, my maiden flight went off without a single glitch. What a great flying plane. 2 clicks of left aileron and 1 click of up elevator and flew hands off. I had to lean out the g38 a bit and after that put 4 more flights on her. Used a 18x8 xoar and talk about pull, WOW!
Running in the engine at 32-1 Pennzoil aircooled. Will switch to Amsoil 50-1 after a gallon or 2 of run in too cut down on the oil splatters.

No, I didn't. I don't know if that was a problem when the plane was first introduced or what. Everything seems fairly strong though. When I opened up the back towards the last former to add weight I added some extra CA to everything I could reach.

RE: New Giant GP Super Sportster!!!!!
Hi, flying mine with a Q42/APC 20x8w. I took the time to read through everything available here, and after reading about those that lost various tail components, decided to add the tail brace wires to mine as well. It sure doesn't hurt the balance problem for sure! Watching it shake on idle much easier to handle with the wires in place too.
My tail has remained intact, but I did manage to loose both ailerons on one flight very early on. One blew off completely, the other was hanging by one hinge with the servo linkage completely seperated....
This mentioned as I'm wondering if you're using the hinges provided in the kit? Suggest you pin them at minimum, and maybe seal the gaps as well? Have mine sorted out fairly well now, and lovin it!
I ran into a problem getting mine slowed down on final unless there was some wind coming down the runway. That led to messing with the CG. Now have it about 1/2" to the rear of the suggested range, which made a huge difference on landings with no adverse affects noted in the air. It'll still drop the nose on inverted 45 degree climb outs. FWIW

RE: New Giant GP Super Sportster!!!!!
Can someone measure the firewall for me? I would like to know how wide it is and how far left and right of center. Thanks.

RE: New Giant GP Super Sportster!!!!!
The firewall is 4-5/8" wide inside the triangle stock. Outside to outside of fuse is 5-7/16". Looking from the pilot's seat the centerline marked on the firewall for the engine is offset 1/2" to the left so there is 2-1/2" from the marked centerline to the outside of the fuse on the left side, 2-15/16" from the marked centerline to the outside of the fuse on the right side. Hope this helps.

RE: New Giant GP Super Sportster!!!!!
Beefed up and cushioned the wing sadle place. I found the thin sides a bit too thin. They might cut in the wings. Further I made room for a 24 OZ. Du-bro tank. This to feed the thirsty OS 160 FX, and have a nice 15 minutes flying time.
I wonder however that if you balance the plane with an empty tank, this still is right with such a big tank in the front. It would seem that the plane is nose heavy at take off with a full tank. Anyone experienced with this?

Put the 7th flight on my GSS today. After a barrel roll I noticed that the plane was no longer banking with little inputs. I had to give it full stick too get it to bank. Decided to land and discovered that the left aileron pushrod had broke. The thing is it broke right in the middle of the rod itself, not where I soldered the links but in the middle! Now I think I'm going too go with some 4/40 carbon fiber pushrods. I have never seen a steel rod just snap clean in half like this one did. If that would have happened on the elevator it would have been a disaster!

24oz's are many [8D]
Let me ask.
What is this grey tape installed on the wing saddle?
It looks really nice.
It also looks thin enough for a good result in this area.
I'd like to use such a tape on mine but i haven't found one with such small height![]

Welcome to the club! The left wing gremlin strikes again! I've lost mine aileron twice, once durring ground testing and the second time in the air. It flies pretty good on just one! [X(]

Yep, sure does fly good on one huh? Took me a little while to realize something was wrong, maybe would have been a different story if it wouldn't had been such a calm day.
I ordered some carbon fiber from Abell RC and should be back up this weekend if the weather is nice. Should be getting close too sorting this bird out and am looking forward to just flying the crap out of it.

RE: New Giant GP Super Sportster!!!!!
Have had the same problems with mine, also pulled out the hinges after replacing them with nylon ones, would metal geared servos help??

RE: New Giant GP Super Sportster!!!!!
I think, after reading about all the failures here, and experiencing the loss of both ailerons on one of my own more memorable flights early on, this airframe is going to demand the toughest available everywhere if you want it to play hard. I've installed large nylon hinges, pinned them, sealed the hinge gaps with monokote, built new linkages using 1/8 piano wire everywhere, and running 5 metal gear servos. I'm happy to report no further trouble after doing that - and the plane is worth it!
I just wish the instructions would have given some hint as to the stresses involved. The number of inflight failures you can read about here would indicate a problem. The trouble is, you don't know what's necessary, how heavy to build it, to get the job done?
