RE: Super Skybolt ARF
Hi,
im new to RCUniverse and im very interested in this plane, i would like to know if anyone has tried a thunder tiger 130 4 stroke in it and how it has performed. Im at 8600 ft (2600 m) i know... so i lose a lot of power compared to sea lvl. Thanks in advance for any information

RE: Super Skybolt ARF
I just acquired my power-plant for my Skybolt. I contemplated for a few years really.. one reason is I haven't had time to build it yet.... so I haven't been in any hurry, the other is I've been on the fence between the YS1.10, and the OS1.10... really leaning toward the OS. I finally found one at a stealy price and like new, so my SS is getting the OS1.10. I almost bought the newer OS.95 which I think would be a very good match also... but I could't pass up the OS1.10 anymore... so the Super-Skybolt will probably now be my winter project, as I now have everything I need.
I'm putting the 1.10 into a BigStick.60 so I can dial it in, and be able to fly it, but I'm sure I won't be disappointed... then when time comes, I'll pull the engine and Rx out and throw those into my Skybolt... so... we'll see if this thread keeps creeping along by then. I will be reviewing it all, as I am aware the 1.10 is on the more powerful side, and I want to refresh myself on what measures have been taken to accomodate the more powerful engines.. IE YS, OS, etc...
Santiago... read through the thread, and you'll get an idea of what's been done to make these planes a bit more durable for the more powerful engines. I didn't know ThunderTiger made a 1.30 4-stroke, but I am aware of the 1.20.... I can't tell you though how it would measure up... as the 1.20's in my experience(most any brand), are quite a bit heavier, not to mention dimensionally bigger as well. I've heard and read about people putting the Saito 1.25 in "kit-built" Skybolts... those kit planes though are a tad heavier, and probably more durable from what I understand. Thats the drawback to ARF's.. we don't get to pick/choose/modify too much to accomodate as much as we'd like sometimes. Although there's alot of crafty people that' have contributed to this thread, so I suggest re-read it all, and see what else you can get out of it... as far as putting that engine in a stock Skybolt ARF.. I probably wouldn't put into a bone stock airframe...but do check out the options that might be in this thread, and elsewhere in this site. Wish I could help you more. Good luck.

RE: Super Skybolt ARF
yeah, ive been reading through and i think it will be a tad too much, being as it will only be my 3rd plane, i guess i better be on the safe side on power, plus the firewall issues have been noted lol i guess a 91 or the 95 4 stroke will be great and even some 75AX or 95AX 2 strokes since they are cheaper and i just finished some other projects. thanks for the info and im looking forward to your review of the 1.10 it seems to be a perfect match if you like great vertical performance!
thanks and take care!

RE: Super Skybolt ARF
The 75AX pulls the plane with far greater thrust than the 91 or 95 4 stroker.
I have mine with a four stroker and a friend has exactly the same setup as me with the 75 AX.
His is far more powerful though I have mine well tuned.

RE: Super Skybolt ARF
yet nothing beats the 4 stroke sound lol how about a 95AX anyone tried this before? how would it perform? i have the new escapade 61 with a 75AX, its not fully broken in yet but it has some nice power. so what does everyone think? 95AX 2 stroke or 95 4 stroke? remember im at 8600 ft
thanks,

RE: Super Skybolt ARF
The 75AX out powers the 95 four stroke.
Another member had that combo with the 95 four stroke, ( until he recently crashed it ).
But yes, the four stroker and the Skybolt just go together naturally.

RE: Super Skybolt ARF
According to specs the .75AX also outweighs the .95V by 4oz.'s. I've also read in reviews the .95V has a very distinct sound.... which again bodes well for alot of bipes. I can't imagine a Skybolt with a 2-stroke though... maybe a kit-built Bolt, but the more traditional ARF version must have a 4-stroke to be in my hangar.
I should be pleased with the 1.10 though.. I got to say it is a jewel of an engine.. looks almost too good to run. I should have it up and running by the end of August or early Sept... dang life keeps getting in the way of my fun.

It's a shame this thread has died off. The Super Skybolt is a beautiful plane.
Mine arrives today and I can't wait to get it in the air. I plan on using a Saito FA 82a that I picked up NIB. The 82 is only slightly less powerful than the OS 91 that is recommended by GP. I also intend to use high torque MG mini servos with a 6v battery under the cowl for balance. I'm shooting for 10.5 lbs. or less if possible.
I'll post pictures and a flight report for anyone who is still watching this thread.

Beautiful. I have one if each also. Brought them out last weekend after nearly a year of not flying (I have a 30CC Gasser now from Extreme Flight that has become my #1). I loved flying all thee! I had forgotten how much fun the Skybolt was to fly. Beautiful loops and rolls. OS91fs

Mine flies like a dream, very steady, goes where you point it. Mine has an OS 95V in the nose and the power is incredible.

The 82 should be ok. Mine flew right off the board, didn't have to do any trim changes, it was that close. Best first flight ever. Its a very nice airframe. Just take the time to get the surfaces in line with the wings, etc. No real issues during assembly.

I would not worry about overpowering it. I think the 95V is the perfect powerplant. It just sounds right. I had to get the 90 degree adaptor for the exhaust with the OS stock muffler to get the exhaust exit in the perfect spot without cutting the cowl.

I had seriously considered using the 95v, I've already got an 85 degree manifold for it. I've also got a Saito 1.00 but I would have to swap it out of an Ultra Sport 60. The US 60 was my one and only plane to fly straight off the board with no trim adjustments and I love flying it. It weighs about the same as the Skybolt and with an APC 13.5X9 pattern prop it will fly straight up till I pull back the throttle. I may end up getting another 1.00 for the Skybolt.

Yes, I've got it nearly complete. I'm having to modify the engine mount to sit lower on the firewall. The Saito is narrower than the recommended OS engine and the mount bolt holes need to be slotted to sit 1/8" lower. I took a break today to go flying. I really wanted to fly it today and I probably could have finished it yesterday but I didn't want to rush it.
This plane is probably one of the nicest ARF's I've done in the last couple of years.

I did the maiden flight this morning between rain showers and I think I'm in love with this plane. The Saito 82a worked great after it was broken in and tuned. Vertical performance was great with an APC 13X6. I'm going to try a 13X8 next time out, the high RPM's were just a little too high at 10,500.
I felt very comfortable flying it right away. It has a very locked-in feeling and the landings were a thing of beauty. I flew the Skybolt 4 times today and would have flown it more but on my last flight the wind had picked up and gotten gusty. On my landing approach a gust of wind pushed the right wing down and it nosed into the ground from about 8 ft. and busted the firewall out. No other damage as far as I can see but I haven't gotten it into the hangar to do a good inspection yet. I'll do that tonight.
Before the Skybolt, my favorite plane was my Ultra Sport 60. Now it's a toss-up. The Skybolt feels very much like the Ultra Sport, they both have a very good, locked-in, feeling.
I'm really surprised the Skybolt does not have a larger following, I think it's an awesome plane and a beauty in the air.

Saw some earlier posts on SB with floats just wondering what kind of floats to get and how did it fly? I've had a skybolt for about 5 years now and when I saw this I thought "How Cool". What kind of floats are they and how long. If you have any details you'd like to share on setup I'd sure appreciate it...Thx!!

http://www.seaplanesupply.com/index.htm Check out this link. He makes very light floats and is a fine source for practical info on set up and mounting. Your floats should be 80% of the measurement from back of spinner to rudder hinge line. Round up to next available float size since you have a biplane. I love flying off of water. It adds a new dimension to flying not to mention beauty in the air and on water. I have been flying my Skybolt ARF for over 7 years with a YS 110/ 14 x 7 3 blade prop. Modified into 2 place open cockpit. Well over 100 flights and still my favorite. No floats for it though.

damifino - I just recently join the SB forum and spent the good part of the day reading all the posts. I have to say after all the hoopla over what engine is the best its really got me thinking about a YS110. I'm running a .75ax with 14x7 apc and I like the speed and vertical I get out of mine. I've never had a 4 stroke although I want to try that YS110. Will the YS pull it as fast as a two stroke? Also After reading all the post on how you did your smoke system I'm wanting that too. I've got the grass is greener syndrome now.
Love the canopy mod, very cool,

KaP2011, Aileron links were off in that picture.
OldDog, The YS110, propped for speed. will probably rip the wings off it. It is nearly 3 HP. With the 14 x 7 3 blade I get a lot of speed, impressive vertical and slows down real nice for landing. A word of caution on the YS. USE a locking prop nut (TruTurn). Let the engine warm up before throttling up. I am used to it now but it will stop and throw a prop and all your hardware 30 to 50 feet if you rush it without warming up or your mixture is lean. I love the power, awesome sound and reliable performance and idle. Would not change the combo at all. Just a little learning curve. Next smoke system I use will be a TME. I have had a lot of trouble and inconsistency with the Sulivan Skywriter. Also, the Skywriter has no barbs on the hose nipples so I had to get creative on securing the hoses. Not a good design. When I take it to the field it gets flown 3 or 4 times every time.
