Just flew my Waco
Hi
Just tested my !QUOT!new!QUOT! waco yesterdays, it is a bit overpowered by a NIB OS 48 4 stroke.
Man what a great plane it is, I'm now looking for a bigger one, mine is a Jamara ARF 1/7 for .30 4 stroke.
And I saw some nice Kankge Wacos here, but where do I get one of those, are they as nice fliers as my Jamara Waco?
Now I'm hooked on bipe's (I have a Antic Bipe that's never flown, but now I will fly it ASAP).
Any more info on the Waco's are appreciated.
Take care.
Joakim

Haven't seen any .40 size. Cox is coming out with a 1/5 scale YMF-5 same as the old PICA kits from what I've read (they will only market it as an ARF). I figure a 1.20 or G-26 will be about right. I have a Sprtsman Aviation .60 size WACO, but they're not sold any more. Great flying plane if you can find one. I started out with an .80 Saito and recently upgraded to a 1.00, and recovered it. The Sportsman is a modified YMF-7 like the one flown by the late Jimmy Franklin.

I was out yesterday evening again and flew it 2 times more, it's so much fun that I ran out of gas the second run.
Oh my god its a flying brick with out the engine to power it, but it all ended well.
So is the kangke waco and cox waco the same size 1/5 or is the kangko waco bigger?
Kangko says to use a 2.4 gas engine and cox says .91-1.50 so the cox must be smaller.

RE: Just flew my Waco
I don't think that you can keep the G-23/26 inside the cowl. I have done several of these over the years, and I did manage to keep a Maloney 125 completely inside the cowl. It is a shame to allow the engine to spoil the classic lines of this model. I am currently building #4 of these Pica 1/5th scale kits, and this one will have the OS 160 twin for power. It will all stay inside the cowl, and while it may be just a tad overpowered, I can manage the throttle. Think about this engine for your WACO.

RE: Just flew my Waco
The Kangke WACO is similar in outline to the Sportsman, although larger. The Kangke also uses symmetrical airfoils, which might account for the larger engine recommendations; all in all, the Kangke is the least faithful to the WACO design it's modeled after. Both it and the Sportsman version have the cockpit moved aft, much closer to the tail than the YMF-7's was. Both these models are patterned after Jimmy Franklin's modified WACO. He had a wing walker trapeze on the top wing and moved the cockpit back so he could see the top wing better, as well as giving the walker a place to stand on the fuselage. I'd love to find a PICA kit of the YMF-5 or-7, I guess I'll just wait for the Cox ARF.

Thanks for all your reply's, I have now flown it 5 times and it's funnier every time I'm out.
My dream senario would be a Kangke Waco with Brisson gas engine, but that is out of my reach money wise.
So I will wait and se how the Cox/Pica Waco turns out.
Take care and fly safe.

RE: Just flew my Waco
I flew my .60 size Sportsman Aviation Waco again 2 weekends ago It is still a VERY fun plane to fly. Very relaxing compared to my other biplanes. My Waco is going on its 3rd year now I just did a RCU search and found my old maiden post dated 7/14/2003. It is by FAR the oldest plane in my garage and still a blast to fly.

RE: Just flew my Waco
Nice shot, BoneDaddy. I forgot what the plane looks like with the wheel pants. I never put them on my plane; I have a pair of H-9 Cub wheels on mine, handles grass a lot better, but makes the plane look sort of like a Stearman. I've been flying mine for about a year and a half. I bought a smoke pump, but think I'll wait and put it on a larger plane, maybe the Cox/PICA WACO when it comes out . I decided to re-cover it after I finally tore the main gear out of it on a botched landing (my bad). The Saito 1.00 is incredible in this plane. I have a 14-7 three blade prop on it and it will climb out of sight straight up, and we've clocked it at about 85 on radar.

RE: Just flew my Waco
I still have my Sportsman Aviation WACO 60 in the box. I bought it off E-bay last year. I have a YS-91 4-stroke to power it but I am thinking about converting it to electric while it is still in the box. I also have the RCM magazine article (Febuary/2004) when it was reviewed. I don't want to build it until I am sure I can fly it and land it when the time comes.

RE: Just flew my Waco
I finally got my Sportsman Waco 30 ready to go, with a OS 48 FS. For some reason I keep forgetting to take it when I go to the field. I brought it down and put the engine in, ran it up in the front yard get it all set. I took it to the field once and forgot to bring the wing bolts so I brought it back home. I decided to just put the bolts in and leave them there.
I also have a Ultimate NIB that I have a 91FS to go in. I just have to get the thing put togethor so I can fly it. I wish I had one of those nice templates that come in the WM Ultimates for the incidence.

RE: Just flew my Waco
I've had both the 30 & 60 SZ Sportsman WACO and The Kangke WACO. My Kangke has a Brison 2.4. I loved my 60 sz Waco it was my first Biplane... The Kangke is way more plane then the Sportsman as far as Quality and what it will do in the AIR. Once you go to 2 wings you won't go back....

Bull, did you recover the Kangke? That is some smoke trail coming out of there. You sure it wasn't an onboard fire.

Your right "Bipes are twice the fun" I have a Waco sport 60 with a 91 Magnum 4S and its a ball to fly, as all bipes are.
