Default My Giles 1/4, sugestions

I got yesterday a used GP Giles G-202 1/4 (73") in perfect conditions. I'm no 3D or great pattern pilot, I just just want to get this plane ready for when I'm ready. I'm still a high wing rookie 1/2 pilot.
I would like to get some suggestions by the experts here in RCU on power plant, radio equipment (I have a JR 6102) and settings. I know and I did the search and plenty of posts came along. But I'm looking for a mild set up on mine. For a while.
All suggestions are greatly appreciated.

This plane can be difficult for low-time pilots, because it has a nasty tendency to tip stall at low speeds. Keep the weight as low as posible and use a low weight glow engine (like OS 120 AX, saito 180). Skip pilot figure wheel pants, etc - do everything u can to minimize weight such as using the lightest battery pack you can afford.

Welcome to RCU.
My Giles is the same size, but a Midwest kit. It is powered with a Moki 1.20 which is plenty for my non 3D flying. Your ARF should come out weighing a bit less than mine and any 1.20 should match your future intermediate learning flying style.
I'm using Hitec 75 oz. metal gear servos on all except throttle. I think you'll be pleased with it when you feel ready.
Just follow the surface throws and Cg location given in the manual.

Thanks for the replys, I was considering the ST2300 or the OS120AX, I still wont fly it any time soon but still want to take it to the field and watch an expert trim it and give it a flight.

I want to show my new plane. Since my plane list has mostly been 40 size, from my 1st plane Eagle II (MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE), Easy Sport, Big Stick, Dura Stick, Mini Super Sportster, Home made mini stick.
And now: 73" Giles G-202[>:]

Last, inside the cowl and frame.
I pretty much have my mind set on the ST 2300, Bisson SuperTigre G2300 Pitts Muffler, MAS 18x8 prop., JR R700 Rx, JR 537 servo for the throttle. Way unsure on what to use for Rudder, Elev. Aileron???[:@]

Good choice for engine and muffler, this is what I am running in my GP G202. Plenty of power, one flip (back flip) starting, and has never quit in flight. For servos I am running standard Airtronics 94102 servos on the ailerons and elevators (no 3D throws) and a Hitec 5625 on the rudder. This thing will knife edge from one end of the field to the other on low rate rudder and no mixing. On hi-rate rudder knife edge loops are no problem. I am using a 5 cell 1100 mAH AA battery pack and the plane weighs in at 12 Lbs.
Oh yes, I think a 18-8 MA might be a little too much prop for that engine. I run mine with a APC 17-6 which it turns at 9600 RPM full throttle.
Limit your elevator throw to a half inch up and a half inch down on lo-rate till you get used to flying it and don't slow it down too much on your landing approach or you will soon learn what happens when one wing quits flying before the other one does.

Good luck, [8D][8D]..............RJ

torombolo,
You need to remove the top covering of the wing and glass the balsa from left to right saddle.
The wing has a problem where it will crack along the saddle.

I have one and had the st 2300 on it was not to bad but no extra power to pull out of hover, switched to OS 160 with apc 18x8w makes big diff. if OS 160 is not out of price range go for that engine.

I would also suggest the OS 1.60 FX. I had this plane a few years ago and I honestly don't think the 1.20 AX is enough engine for this plane. I have a Seagull Laser 200 with a 1.20 AX and it works perfectly with a plane that size, but the Giles is larger and heavier. Also I would suggest you practice with a low wing trainer before you even attempt to fly this plane. The Giles is a good flyer but it's extremely tricky to land. I had my own share of hard landings that caused the fuselage to crack above the front end of the wing saddle more than once.

Thanks for all the input!!!
Don't worry I wont be flying this plane soon. I do want to have it all set up and ready, and at least use a buddy box way high.
but I know I aint ready for the landing, take off and in flight no problem (LANDINGS ARE MANDATORY[:@])

RJ is it a fast flyer with that prop and engine combination?
Thanks again.

HuskerBoy: Do you still have your Midwest Giles 202? I have one and got to get a good engine for it. What RPM and prop size is there with the Moki 1.20? Thanks Capt,n

I am waiting on a saito 1.82 twin for a midwest g-202 , reading this thread it sounds like i might need to reconsider and go with a lighter engine, is this correct.

I'M BUILDING A MIDWEST G-202 AND WANT TO KNOW IF ANYBODY OUT THERE HAS BUILT ONE IN THE PAST, NEED TO KNOW GOOD ENGINE THAT WILL HAVE PLENTLY OF OF VERTICAL WITHOUT TEARING IT APART. I'VE BEEN BUILDING AND FLYING AEROBATIC PLANES FOR OVER 20 YRS BUT HAVE BEEN OUT OF THE HOBBY FOR AWHILE. I KNOW IT IS A HEAVY PLANE COMPARED TO NEWER DESIGNS AND I'VE HEARD A LITTLE ABOUT IT'S WEAKNESSES, BUT WOULD LIKE TO GET SOME MORE INFO!

The plane in my avatar is the Midwest G202 I built about eight years ago. I had a Webra 1.20 in it and it is now being flown by a friend I gave it to with a GMS 1.20. If I were to do it again I would use either a ST 2300 (which if I remember is shown on the original plans) or the OS 1.60 AX. Whatever you use, keep it as light as possible. I am now flying the ST 2300 in a GP G202 at about 12 pounds, the vertical is good but you could not call it a rocket out a hover. Both planes do the most beautiful axial rolls you will ever see.........RJ

No problems with the Midwest G202. The GP G202 (ARF) however, had problems with the fuselage in the area of the leading and trailing edges of the wing..........RJ
