The building is coming along just fine. I finished the wings last night and it was very easy since the ailerons where alreay hinged. I think I will try the Dubro 14oz tank. I will take a look at the 16x6 prop and see if there is enough ground clearance. If not I my look into the Dubro flexable landing gear. I think it will give that plane a extra inch on ground clearance. I saw somewhere in the post on the Phoenix Extra 330s that someone did use one but it does have to be trimmed up a bit to get it to fit.

I installed the dubro 14oz tank. It does fit but you will have to move the support pice back a little and glue it in place. The head of the dubro tank does not come through the firewall and you will have to use long pieces of tubeing to get the fuel line through the fire wall. That being said it is a good fit and the top hatch even still fits without any modifacation. Here are a few pics I took of my progress so far.

I am going to be installing a Magnum 108A in mine that spinns a APC 16x6 9000RPM. I am not a 3D flyer but I think that should give me all the power I will need. After reading your last post I installed a set of Hanger 9 3 1/4" wheels. I did not really like the little wheels that came with the kit. I would like to have it finished by this coming Saturday to do the maiden. I think it will be close

I am having trouble installing the Magnum 108A. It is a little wider then a OS 91 and the stock motor mount will not work. [:'(] I am trying to use an adjustable GP mount I have but with it I cannot get the recommended 120mm distance from the firewall to the prop bolt. [:@] Has anyone else run into this problem? I think my engine is about the same size as a 120 two strock so I am hoping someone can help me with te issue.

Are you saying you are too long or too short? Sorry but I have a webra on mine and not an OS so I dont know your issue personally. Too short and of course you just shim it out with plywood or if not that much a washer behind each mount hole. Too long and you will have to just install the engine as short as you can get, adjust the cowl and rebalance the c.g.. I was fortunate that my webra had a mount that made things perfect. Normally Ihave to add plywood to make my lengths. Of thirty two planes I have only two were ever adjustable correctly with a mount. Since 3d is not your thing it will not hurt to add a few ounces of weight that plywood would add.

I went ahead and used the GP adjustable mount. It is beefer than that little blue mount that came with the Extra. It will not left me get the 4 3/4' from the firewall though. I will add some cowl hardwood blocks to the side tof the firewall and mount the cowl to them. The engine is 5 1/4" from the firewall.[:'(] I will move everthing as far back as I can to get the cg right.

Try and adjust for location of the hub with respect to the cowl instead of as per what the manual says. The manual is for a 61FX and you are installing an oversize engine anyway

I have the new version on this Phoenix Extra and the manual is for an OS 91. My engine is just a little larger than an OS 91 but the stock motor mount that came with the ARF did not look like it would hold up to the Magnum 108A so I went ahead and used a GP adjustable mount. I just had to relocate the bottom 2 blind nuts. I could nut get the 120mm location with this mount and the engine is at 135mm out from the firewall. I will have to move everything inside the fuselarge back some to get the proper CG. The new version has the CG at 100mm and not 120mm.

I have an extra long cowl if anyone needs one. I had a little accident with mine and I ordered the wrong cowl. I reordered the short cowl to fit my older style model. The more I fly this plane the more I like it. You all need to watch flying this plane too fast. I was making a low high speed pass with mine and noticed I was having elevator flutter. I instantly reduced power and the flutter disappeared, but be careful. I reread this thread and several guys said, "watch your speed". I noticed a slight bit of slop in my elevator linkage so I reworked it and took out the slop but I will also be extra careful about flying too fast. But, this plane really looks good in a shallow dive high speed pass. I am flying with a GMS .76 with a 13 x 6 prop. Has plenty of power for my needs.

I just finished putting together the old version with the Dle20. Actually, I had already had it together with a FS91SII earlier and was waiting to put the DLE20 in this season (ours starts just about now). It was full of woes in the setup and took a lot of time. I have two major concerns
1) Put in the 2-56 Dubro rod one side threaded with the phenolic arm and snap-on ball link on it (see pic). I am worried it will come off due to vibration
2) Its now 3.8kgs (8.48lb) and am starting to worry its overweight
Have done just a temporary install right now, planning to tighten everything later after I feel more secure with this setup. What do you guys think? If its too heavy for 3d I am thinking going to the fs110 I was originally going to update to (or may be a OS 95AX)

That looks like a good setup to me. I am not a 3d pilot but I think the DLE20 is the perfect gas engine for this plane. Mine is almost finished with the Magnum 108A and I had to move things around in the cockpit area of the plane. Because I counld not get the 120mm out from the firewall with the motor mount I used I made a battery area at the rear of the cockpit and moved my 2 A123 1100mah batteries there . I hope this helps out with the CG.

Dave, You are quite right. This is the 1st aerobatic model that I have built that I have not done the mod on the elevator. For some reason I decided to go exactly by the plans with no mods. I kind of regret that now. I think over the winter I will pull the stock servo's and buy some metal gear servo's for the elevator's. I am building a Sig Fazer currently and I can use the stock servo's on the Fazer. Anyway when I first built this model it was pretty twitchy and I consider myself an intermediate flyer. So I dumbed it down a little bit, 60% expo and 40% controol throws on low rates. Now that I am getting used to the plane i am about ready to decrease the expo and increase the control thows. Anyway, my plane comes in right at 7 lbs with the GMS .76, and I am not into 3D so I get along just fine with the power unit.

I just finished building my Phoenix Extra tonight. Mine balanced right on the 100mm CG (4") from the leading edge like the plans said. Mine is the new version and I was wondering how well this plane fly's at this setting. Has anyone flown the new version with the 100mm cg balance point? If so how well does it fly? I have the Magnum 108A in mine and I had to move the batteries to the rear of the cockpit area in the fuselage to get it to balance at 100mm from the leading edge. I have not weighed mine yet but I think it is right around 8lbs or less. I'll post some photo's when I can.

Reason I'm asking is I'm really putting a good strain on those wings with my flying... wondering if I should take it easy on the plane (not inclined too)
I'm flying it full bore, very agressively & it takes it all sofar.
Using a YS91AC on 20%... Its quite a speedster on this engine
eg.. snap a wing off in a full throttle hard turn etc..
Reason I'm asking is I'm really putting a good strain on those wings with my flying... wondering if I should take it easy on the plane (not inclined too)
I'm flying it full bore, very agressively & it takes it all sofar.

I flew the Extra withe the DLE20 today. Havent flown for 6months so I really cant compare against the FS91 earlier but I had left the trim at the same as the 91 so I can tell what has happened from trim adjustment
Firstly, this engine is really really strong. We put in so much down trim. Even with low throws it was quite reactive and I was happily gaining altitude even at 20 -25% throttle. I didnt do too much aerobatics today, had just one flight that too partly. Also, I had to fly too far to really feel the airplane because there was a huge flock of kites, eagles etc tailing an eagle shaped glider that was flown by some fellow fliers. But my trainer took the sticks for some time and he had two observations- one, over powered airplane. Even at low throttle it was doing a rudder loop easily. And two, its a bit of staller at low speed- while he was landing it was tending to squat down- even I saw that. I didnt do any landings today, so I cant give more details. In the little I flew, it does all the moves at 20% power and is likely to happily hover at 30-40% power. A fellow experienced flier has a couple of circuits and said that it really flew well. He also said landing was 'ok'

Hi People, it's been long since i don't write here!! . Well the thing is that my 330S with the 91 4stroke flew excellent, plenty of power to do a normal flight and acrobatics, NO Hovers. But i'm having a problem, i already fixed 4 times the landing gear, 2 of those was separated from the fuselage and in all of them was bended [:'(] .
Does anybody know what other landing gear that is more stronger can fit, besides the "#235 Fliton Extra Main Gear " ?

Off on a tangent, I've had my extra 330 for almost a year and a half. It is powered with an OS FS91 and has good power. After I moved the CG forward by quarter inch, adjusting the tension on the pull/pull cable, and quadruble checking the dual elevator servo throws (equal) - the extra fly's so much different. Inverted flights I now need a slight down elevator pressure (i like), the inside and out side loops are clean, and the landings are so much easier. Before, the landings the plane would come to a slow and then suddenly balloon up or maintain same altitude at 5 feet not settling down and then once it reaches stall speed it drops. that's with giving down elevator input (which feels wierd). Now, it lands more like my escapade. On final turn I can bleed most of the speed off and right before I touch down I bring the wings level with some up elevator and 3 point landing. FUN!!
