RE: Phoenix Extra 330S 60-90 Size
smokey the aircarft flys nice in 3d with a large prop with low pitch i have cut off the elevator taps because i recon they are to large but the rudders fine.
I seem to have problems with the landings the aircraft seems to bonce upwards of over 3-4feet even if you come in fast or slow.

Got to field today finally with great weather. Here are some pics. The .75 was great. Not a rocket pullout, but it will hover...so I'm happy. 3D was great just watch that elevator like TOC said. I had to drop my rates down a little on the elevator because it wanted to snap a little going into a wall, but after dropping the rates it just stayed there and would hold beautifully. I am very excited about going to the fly-in tomorrow at the field.

hello wc524 when your extra comes into land does it bounce because no matter what speed you come in at even if you are 2" off the ground
and you touch the wheels down it will bounce any were from 2feet to 5or 6 feet high.
cheers

It didn't bounce much more than my old Phoenix extra....I attribute it to practice with my old one. Having the CG back really helps too on those landings. Where is your CG at TOC?

I can't remeber without setting the model up but i think it was on the spar tube , but what ever it was its the mesurement that they say in the book.
Ive got a ASP .91 2s on my and had to place about 60grams of lead on the tail to get the correct c.o.g and thats with a dry tank.
cheers

Having the tank so far forward of the CG would make it fly noseheavy, thats why I am near the 130mm mark (which is the farthest recommended). When the fuel is full I am on the middle of the CG which helps out with pattern stuff, but it still allows me to 3D comfortably and when the tank goes to around 1/2 tank it really like to be hanging around with the tail down.
One thing I don't like is how it can snap if I'm not careful on how much elevator I input. It just is an Extra and they all snap.
I maxed the throws on 3D flight smokey, but I really only use the full deflection when doing slow maneauvers like harriers, hovering, rolling harriers (still working on), but it's flies great.

I was originally going to run a OS 91FX on this plane, but picked up s good deal on the Saito 125. So I am going to have a low time good running 91FX for sale cheap!
I think I will move the blind nuts and mount this horizontally on the plane, hopefully make the engine a little more user friendly. I have never been a big fan of inverted 4 stroke installs.

Hi everyone.
Just had a ball at the field with the Extra. This is my first 60-90 size plane and it sure looks big in the sky to me.
Lands with real ease though cant understand the landing problems which some are facing.??

How did you secure the gas tank? The manual says use some sort of silicone adhesive or something. Not very excited about that method.

To secure the fuel tank I used velcro and strapped a tie-rap around the tank to keep the two pieces of velcro from coming appart. Seems to be holding up well.

For the people using the stock tank. How many minutes of flight do you get? The tank looks too small for my 91fx. I will mainly will be doing 3D so full power will rarely be done.

RE: Phoenix Extra 330S 60-90 Size
I maiden my extra yesterday with an OS 91fx with 15x6 zinger prop and stock tank. My count down timer was set for 6 minutes, upon the alarm I entered the landing pattern and set it down. When I checked the tank there was only a couple of ounces left. The plane flew very nice, and has a beautiful inverted flat spin around the cg. The landing took a couple of passes due to the nose pitching up with reduced throttle. I will be adding one degree right and down thrust for todays flights.

rprice19......Do you think i can get 10 min flight time out of the tank? What is the actual capacity of the tank? Where did you place the battery? I'm almost at that point in my installation. Did you use the stock muffler? Sorry for the many questions... Excited in getting the bird in the air.
Thanks
Smokey

HI guys,
just a question about the with mounting. Never seen a 2 piece wing setup before..and the instructions are limited to a couple of lines and a photograph....so..do you glue the spar-tube to one of the wing halves? Looks awefully flimsy to be held by only 2 nylon bolts per wing.[].

We use the same nylon bolts to hold the wings on alot bigger planes than this one. No problems at all.

RE: Phoenix Extra 330S 60-90 Size
Smokey...the stock tank is 11 ounces, and yes you can fly 10 minutes without alot of wide open throttle. Today I flew for 11min 30 seconds on the stock tank mostly at half to three quarters throttle, but did use full throttle for about 8 full power passes/uplines. On this flight I was mostly flying trimming routines and then the IMAC basic sequence twice, along with 4 touch and goes.
I use the rather large stock muffler that came with the OS91FX and mounted it as all the way back against the mount bolts. The batteries (4-cell NiMh) is mounted behind the fuslage spar immediately behind the battery tray, and I used a wooden 15x6 zinger prop (weighed 1 oz. less than APC). The back of the tank is flush with the rear of the tank compartment ( to reduce the amount of cg shift from full to empty tank). NO WEIGHTS was added to get it to the recommended cg-- only placement of battery and using light wooden prop.
Tomorrow will I will probably move the battery to the front side of the spar to move the cg a little forwared for a tad more locked-in feel, for I intend to use this plane for IMAC basic practice.
