Just got on the line with tower hobbies, they're gonna send out the rod, hopefully they get it right this time. Other than that it looks like everything else is here.

sno, if you don't want to wait around for Tower to send the bolt, you can just go to your local hardware store and get a long bolt of the same thread and cut it off. Take the cone to make sure the thread is correct.

Hey Cmoulder, I did get a chance to fly this past weekend but really can't say if the adjustments helped, the wind was about 20mph with gust to 30, i tried some hard turns and never could tell if the wing would drop, the wind was really knocking it around.
Next time i fly I will let you know, should be this weekend..

Thanks, Jay
Jay, yep it's almost impossible to tell if there are any positive effects from changes when the conditions are like that!

I was also flying in some rather strong wind and nearly lost mine yesterday. Doing a landing approach, quite low and got hit by a huge burst of wind from the side, catching the left wing tip and cartwheeling a couple of times. Really ugly, and I thought the fuse would be broken in half. Well, the wing tube was bent a little, but amazingly no damage to the wing, and minimal damage to the fuse. I bent the tube back straight and did some quick repairs to the fuse and was flying again in less than an hour!

Hi guys-

I'm buying one of these from a local guy here in Denver, thanks for all the info contained herein. I'll put up some thoughts and images once I get the goods. It will be my first nitro plane, and my largest, so looking forward to it but a little nervous...

Cheers,
Snellcomp

Don't worry - the bigger they are, the better they fly!

And you can land, fuel up, and go fly again immediately if you want.

Thanks for the encouragement - I've been flying an Extra 300 on RealFlight 3.5, seems like the specs are pretty close. Which sim plane would you say is the closest to the Phoenix 330S? I've got FS One & RealFlight 3.5

Thanks again

Hey cmoulder, I flew this weekend, and she still drops the left wing in a hard turn, might try a little wash out next.

Jay,

You might already know this, but keep in mind that ALL planes will snap out (tip stall) at some point. Also remember that a stall is not just a slow speed phenomenon.

It's subjective judgment to say at what point a tip stall SHOULD occur with a particular model. If you yank on the elvator hard enough, you can get any plane to stall. Having not seen it fly, I wouldn't hazard a guess as to whether the stall is occurring before it should. If you're flying at full throttle, banking 55 degrees and then give it 25 degrees of elevator, it WILL stall. If you're flying half throttle, banking 35 degrees and give it 9 degrees of elevator, it shouldn't tip stall. If it stalls under those conditions then you've definitely got a problem.

Next time I fly mine I'll "bank and yank" and see how it responds.

Looks good!

You will need one more servo if you do the dual elevator set-up, which is standard. I made an elevator joiner (from 3/32" piano) and am using one elevator servo, and the rudder servo is also mounted in the tail, not using the stock pull-pull arrangement.

PS: Since it is partially assembled, you want to make sure the elevator and rudder (h-stab, v-stab) are straight. If those are crooked, it will be very difficult to correct the problem.

Not a yank, were talking low rates and not even giving it all that. The plane will do it worse when I move the c.g. back more...
Heck!! I might even still be tail heavy, but it balance's fine.. At what mm is your's balanced?

Jay, OK I figured you knew all that but just making sure.

Definitely sounds like there is a discrepancy between the wings wash-out or, hopefully not, incidence difference that is compensated for with trim but shows up when maneuvering. (If one aileron is 'down' for level flight trim, that wing effectively has wash-in.) So I think you're on the right track there. What you describe should not be happening, because in my experience this is one of the least snappy and most well-behaved planes I have ever flown.

My CG is at 128mm, requiring just a little push when inverted.

Bob, Mine is sitting at 120 mm at 128 it's real nose heavy...

Hmm... did you move the Rx batt back to balance it at 128mm?

Battery is all the way back of the hatch but reciever is just behind the tank. Battery is a 2500 mh nimh AA four cell pack.
I have had the c.g. back that far before but that's when it would get real stupid in mild turns..

The only things this can be attributed to are wing incidence/wash-in -out differences, and possibly lateral balance. However, lateral balance problems should be fairly minuscule in such a small model. But if everything checks out, it's easy enough to check lateral balance.[sm=confused.gif]

I flew mine a couple of days ago (on skis) and I had to give it a ridiculous amount of elevator to get it to snap out at any attitude. Flies almost like one of those .46-sized "flip planes" such as a Twist or Mayhem.

Default RE: Phoenix Extra 330S 60-90 Size

Greetings,

I am looking to get this model and looking for some advice. This will be more or less my second plane. First being the GP/Flyzone Cessna 182 Training System, which for some reason has just broke.

Planed Set up

Engine: Super Tiger 90
Muffler: Slimline Pitts Muffler SuperTigre 90
Radio: Futaba 6EX 6-Channel 2.4GHz Transmitter
Servos: S3152
Fuel Tank: 14 oz

I choose the Pitts muffler because I wanted it to fit nicely and I have read that the 270 deg mount causes engine troubles. Is there any downfalls to using a Pitts muffler? Power, Sound and overall performance?

I wanted to upgrade from the 10oz fuel tank to a 14oz or larger. Does anyone have any pointers there?

What limitations would I have with the 6ch radio?

Any recommendations on servos? I prefer Futaba. I am a rookie pilot and will probably like to do some 3D stuff here and there.

Also I have been playing around with Real Flight 3.5 that I got with a Cessna 182 training system. There wasn’t an Extra model to play with so I used a Cap 232 model. Are they close enough to get the feel?

I had to change out the engine and scale up the size and weight of the Cap to be about the same as the Extra. If anyone is an expert on Real Flight I would like to get as close to possible simulation of this model.

The simulation Cap 232 I am practicing with is about 7.8 lbs with a 14oz tank and ST90. I can’t recall the thrust it’s putting out but I want to say around 12lb. What would a ST90 be putting out typically with the props described here?

Thanks,
Richard

I will answer what i know.
Good idea on turning the engine to 90 degrees, I ran a sp .75 first on this plane and it did not like the 45 degrees, I am now running the o.s. 91 fx with no problems at all, The 6 channel will be fine but make sure you have the high torque servos on all except the throttle. I am running a 12 oz. in mine, 2 oz's more shouldn't hurt. They say the pits style muffler will decrease performance, I have one on a O.S. 61 and it runs the same, just try it and see..

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Jay

Everything you're doing sounds fine. Just get someone experienced to help set up your rates and expo.

Only issue might be fitting the 14-oz tank. Depending on the dimensions it might not fit in the tank space without a little carpentry.

Your plane should weigh around 7 lbs, maybe a little less with a 2-stroke. No way an ST90 is gonna make 12 lbs of thrust, more like 8.25, or maybe 8.75 on a good day. Still, plenty for this model.

How do you think this would fly with a 26cc gasser?

Waaaaayyy too much weight, vibration and power for this very light airframe!

I have a G20 EI and it delivers 14 lbs of thrust, so even a 20cc gasser is too much. Also, by the time you add the very heavy ignition and ignition battery, it's still way too heavy and would also be sticking out the cowl all over the place.

This is not a gasser candidate, period. Best engine for insane power and vertical in a reasonable package is the Saito 1.25 glow. I like OS engines, but the OS 1.20 4-stroke is a lot heavier than the Saito. Another truly insane option is the OS 1.20 AX 2-stroke. IMHO still way too much, but do-able with throttle management.

If you want a neat-looking, nice setup with plenty of power, the OS .91 2-stroke with a Slimline pitts muffler will fit completely under the cowl.

I'm running the O.S. 91FX on the 45 degree and stock muffler spinning a APC 14X4W AND LOVE IT..
I have tried several styles of props and this one is the best for me.

got mine done yesturday, looks great. The stickers stand out more than usual, but what do you want for 150.00? os120 surpass, looks great, long as the plane can take the power, I love it. I was suprised, I though I had to cut more out of the cowl, but not much. Pics coming soon.
