RC Pilots,

NitorPlanes have both the Cessna 140 size for $199.00 and 50 size for $99.00 available, it is called Cessna Sky.

This is my slightly bashed CMP 182. Just painted dark gray where it was red, added a canard behind the engine ala Cessna Katmai. Magnum 1.2 fs, Hitec radio with Extreme Power Systems 2.4, R0obart nose gear.. Not flown yet, will fly later this Spring.

The canard is for STOL operations ( Short TakeOff and Landing). Helps to reduce stall speed to around 35 knots. Google Cessna Katmai and you see more. Thanks for the compliment. I am very pleased with the results.

Well, I just maiden my cessna 140 yesterday.....
I cannot believe how stable and beautiful is in the air.
I built it with my heart, slowly, following all the reccomendations, it took me close to 7 monts to complete.
The four first minutes of the flight, were like a dream come true..............and then.........
The right wing snapped and flew off at about 100 feet on the air.......
I just saw my beautiful plane dive into the ground and disintegrate !!!!
After a close inspection, I found out that the aluminum tube to reinforce the wings is too light and it didn't resist.....
I lost my $ 1,000.00 plane because of a $5.00 stupid tube !!!!!
Please do not make the same mistake I did. DO NOT USE THE SUPPLIED WING TUBE !!!!
I'll post the video later, after I finish swallowing this golf ball......

Wow, very sorry to hear about your loss. It is almost as bad as loosing a pet.
Did you have the struts completely attatched? I know it says in the directions that the struts aren't supposed to be structural but cosmetic but I really screw them down (both sides) before each flight session.
If so, the aluminum tube had to have had a major flaw in it. If you have video of the flight, maybe Nitroplanes or whoever you got the ARF from might replace it??

What is the supplied tube OD? As I recall, earlier in the thread there was comment about the tube being a loose fit going thru the fuse, which is not good. I haven't bought the kit yet, but was considering CF or Home Depot aluminum tube.

Sorry to hear of your loss. We've all had crashes, but yours was really nasty, especially after all your care in assembling. I would expect the seller and/or the manufacturer to , at minimum, replace the kit.

mcacs: Very sorry to hear of your loss, especially on the maiden flight when it seemed to be going so well. [sm=frown.gif]

Some people claim that a heart and soul are only put into a 'kit' build but as you have shown that is not an all encompassing statement. I too put a lot of extra time and a lot of my heart into my ARF "builds" and I can appreciate the agony you are feeling.

The best thing to do is saddle up again, and get back on that horse! Build another, it will be better, stronger, than before.

Thanks to all for your encouraging words....
I know, this hobby is a continuous learning experience.....
I'm in love with this airplane and I will get another kit and re-build it as soon as the economy permits.
I know all the flaws of it, thanks to you all, and I know the next one will be better.....
I'll post the video as soon as I can edit it. My 11 yr old son missed a lot of passes and there is a lot of just clouds on it.
I'll try to shorten it to just the airplane flying and crashing.

THANK YOU ALL AGAIN !!!

Happy Holidays.

cj

That is a very nice plane you got. I did look about the Cessna Katmai and found Peterson's Performance Plus. The canard is very interesting concept. Did you built the canard from scratch or you got is as a kit? It looks like it is not that easy to make and install, unless you have some Aeronautical Engineering Design know how.

Thanks,
Ben

mcacs,

Very sorry of your loss.

Thanks for posting, this will help some, including myself, to think about your unfortunate event.
I salute you for still having the positive spirit.

I thought about a solution to this problem, I was thinking about putting a dowel inside the aluminum tube. RC Pilot what do you think about this idea?
I am not sure if there is an aluminum tube with the same outside diameter but thicker wall available.

I don't know if you can. I have never seen the set for sale. what I would suggest is go to a hobby store online and order those struts made from aluminum instead of the fiberglass that comes stock.

It fell apart? Wow. It must have been very brittle and made of another material other than what mine is made out of. My brackets are of a medium soft plastic and are not brittle. You can call Nitroplanes to see if they have that part but good luck because even though they sell alot of planes, they are TERRIBLE when it comes to customer service, answering phones and spare parts! AK models might have the parts you need and are alot better to deal with.

Mine is also medium soft plastic, but it gone in pieces anyway [] maybe it´s a thing to check time to time.I have talked to Nitroplanes but they did not have them as sparepart. I have also talked to shops i Sweden but they said that Cmpro Europe didn´t have it as sparepart. I will try to talk with AK models. thanks for the tip

Manila Eagle
My canard is only for appearance. The Katmai has a moveable trailing edge, just like an elevator. I would have done that too, except I didn't want to tie up 2 servos for that feature. Each half on my plane is glued to 1/4" plywood plates extending out from the firewall. I just have to have an airplan that looks different, and I am certain I hit the nail on the head.

cjtyped,

Huuummmm, would the canard create somekind of a problem on take off and landing?
This link maybe useful to look into before maiden you bird. http://www.scribd.com/doc/19304241/B...of-Aeronautics

Well it's official.... a Sky 120 is on the way for my birthday!!!

Will be adding: carbon wing spar, lighting kit, nose strut with forward rake, Top Flite interior kit.... Also considering the Top Flite wheel pants.
Plan to epoxy the wing together, modify the rudder and elevator linkages & pushrods, and add much reinforcement to the firewall since it needs sooooo much nose weight anyways.
3600mAh Sub-C pack will also be mounted in front of firewall.

Still undecided on powerplant....

Will a Saito 125 be enough??

also been considering 23-25cc gas

Both of those power plants will be more than sufficient. The Saito will sound the coolest though but you will get alot more fuel economy with one of the gassers.
Good luck with it.

You can get a Saito gasoline burner now in three different sizes. That's having your cake and eating it too!

Cool...
I havn't heard good things about the saito gasser though... Seems there is problems with the ignition box? ...or was that the new G20ei I was reading about..hmmm

I definately love the sound of a saito though..... got a 91 in my Great Planes Reactor, and love it.

The build will start on December 23 when I get to open it on my birthday... [8D]
