nitromodels p-51 60
hi everyone
i just received the p-51 .60 from nitromodels, and after looking over everything and trying to analyze the manual, i still dont understand anything...for the price, the plane is beautiful, but the manual is terrible...anyways i was trying to see how the retracts will fit in the wings, and it looks like i have to cut a pretty big piece of the wing so that the wheel fits in!! I assume thats what i need to do, however it would be nice if the manual said something, so that i wouldnt have to worry about it!! So i would like to know, if any of you guys own one of these planes, how did you install the retracts ??
thanks in advance
chris

Hey chris,
I just got one of them also. You're right, the manual leaves alot to be desired. I've got the landing gear installed in mine already, all I had to remove was covering, and the top of one rib to get the wheel cup to fit in the hole. I've put together several ARF's that the manuals had all kinds of pictures, but no text. Good luck.

hi
thanks for your help
what engine are you using in yours? im using a 91 4 stroke, not too overpowered thats for sure...but i had it laying around so it'll have to do the job
now i have to figure out where all the pieces go, since the manual doesnt say anything...soon they wont even include a manual, might as well buy a puzzle lol
anyways thanks

Hey Chris,
I'll be putting in a Tower .75, can't seem to get away from the 2-strokes. Pitts muffler came today, so will probably mount the engine tomorrow. Before you mount the landing gear, be sure to check the mounting plates and see that they are secure in the wing. Not a bad idea to get some 30 min epoxy in there on the bracing ect. I did'nt do that one time and had the landing gear fold on a soft landing. Mine is in the Marie style, what's yours?

hey
i have the marie as well, i finished gluing the wings and the elevator, and installed the engine...im waiting for my retract servo to come, are you installing them? anyways the plane looks really nice for the price, but the instructions are terrible, plus nothing really fits, especially the servo trays in the wings...im thinking of using a 12*10 with the 91 4 stroke, do you think that'll make it move? im looking for speed on that plane....
good luck finishing up your plane

Hey Chris,
Don't know much about 4 strokes, but a 12-6 to 13-6 prop is what the prop size is for my .75, might want to ask some of the 4 stroke guy's but sounds to me like you might need more prop. Oh yeah your .91 will pull it around fine I think with the right prop combination. I have noticed the same thing, the wing servo trays on mine don't fit real well either. I've got the engine mounted and just got the aileron extensions in so can finish the wing, then will move on the tail. Just re-read your post and maybe that prop would be fine, lots of pitch, but I just am not sure about 4 strokes. Keep me posted and good luck.

Chris,
Before you make final fitting for the wheel cup locations, make sure that with gear down the centerline of axle is at least to the wing leading edge. 1/2" ahead would be even better to prevent so many nose overs.

Hi Guys, just thought I'd let you know that the Hangar 9 P-51 60 Manual is available for download. The hangar 9 is the same aircraft and the instructions are a huge leap forward and very helpful.
cheers, Chris

Chris - Had one just like yours I got from Wonder Hobby some time ago. All in all was quite happy with it. Powered with a Saito 80. Used the hardware that came with it. Not to smart. After about 12 - 15 flights was on final, comining in a nice decent rate and then the doggone things wouldn't come up. Needless to say, wiped it out. After close exam, determined the clevis pin on the elevator broke.
Have a Double Trouble due for delivery tomorrow. Obviously will not use supplied hardware, espcially, plastic clevises. Also have a new Magnum 91 to put in it. Engine needs breaking in but weather is a bear. Today, finally got above freezing for first time in 6 days.
Good luck and will be looking for more info on how its going.,

Double Trouble arrived at 1 PM today. Unpacked and delighted with the covering. Very few wrinkles. Think I'm really going to like this one. Has many miles on it already and not a ding. Just think - china to california - california to memphis, TN - Memphis to Kansas City - Kansas City to Salina, KS - Salina to Denver, CO - Finally at home.

Chris,
Finished her up Wed., just have a couple of minor things to do. Nice looking plane, hope she flies as good as she looks. Had another delivery Tue., got my Rambler 45 from World Models. Guys I gotta tell you, when I saw that it said factory installed re-tracts I thought yeah right. But to my suprize, when I opened the box, there they were, mounted and everything. Kudos to World Models, covering perfect not so much as a wrinkle. Can't wait to get started on it. How are you coming with yours Chris. Nice looking plane whip.

RCL...You're gonna love that Rambler. Two older ones are flying in this area and they are great. They just came back on the market after about a year of absence. If I had one I'd get an after market full canopy or replace the rear windscreen with a head rest.

RE: nitromodels p-51 60
drone pilot,
They have changed the canopy, mine is full cover. I could not believe that they went ahead and installed the re-tracts. I tried to order one of these last year, and was told by Paul at airborne models in Ca. that they had been discontinued. Then when I got the last issue of the AMA mag. I saw that they were again being offered. I went right to their web site and looked up the Rambler, there she was, but had a price of $189.99. The add in the AMA mag said $139.99, long story short, I was charged $139.99. I plan to start on her Tuesday, sure is pretty in purple. Nice to know I'll like it, Thanks.

RE: nitromodels p-51 60
Thanks, Mike
It's an AK...
Came just like yours but I cut the flaps out on my band saw. I chopped the fuselage with a Zona hand saw and bought the Top Flite Mustang B conversion kit from Tower Hobbies.
Actually, capping the flaps and getting the hinges the way I wanted them was more challenging than bashing the fuselage.
I too opted for the Hanger 9 retract wheel wells as the AK supplied wells were brittle and too short in the down leg area.
Here's what the wing looked like after I peeled the covering away. I had to completely replace the landing gear blocks as they were laminated lite ply and barely glued into the wing. Had I not replaced them, on my 1st landing I would have ripped the retracts right out of the wing.

Need some help from someone who has flown this bird. What CG have you used. Instructions that came w/the plane from Nitro say 5.3" Instructions on the Hangar 9 version say 4.75. What did you use?
Appreciate the help.

Hey Chris, thanks for the tip on the link for the manual download! It is indeed, a terrific help in constructing this model. Even though I have put my fair share of ARF's together, when you don't have a good manual to help you along, it leaves you doing a lot of head scratching, and wasting a lot of time trying to figure things out. [:@] Again, thanks!!

RE: nitromodels p-51 60
I have a question.... How did you guys who have already built this plane determine where to drill the two holes for the wing hold down screws in the trailing edge of the wing? On the Hangar 9 version, those are predrilled and all you have to do is cut the covering to expose them, but on this model they're not predrilled.[:'(]
Never mind, I managed to get the holes drilled by puting the mounting screws in the blind nuts facing up so that when I pressed down on the trailing edge of the wing, the screws left slight indentation in the wing covering. I then drilled two holes where the indentations were and mounted the wing normally. that worked out pretty good. Wing and airscoop are now mounted.
