hello there guys,i,ve just came back from a training course(marine and submarine firefighting) and im gonna start work on my tucano.what i would really appreciate is if anyone can tell me where i can find a decent retract set for my plane as i am having a lot of difficulties finding one here in cyprus!!!i,ve tried ebay but there's nothing on it.i need a good set as the plane is gonna weigh about 3,5-4kg,OS 70 FS goin on it.Any help would be really appreciated guys.i tried with robart but they said that their sets will be availiable in a month or so,i'm planing to get this bird up in about 2 weeks.thanks in advance guys

How about an update on everybody's Tucano. I've been having a great time with mine and have received quite the number of compliments on how it looks in the air. I scratched it up a bit (wingtips and tail strikes) while figuring out the retracts so I've decided to recover the plane. I picked up a new canopy from Tower, and bought a set of the canopy lines from Jolly. I'll post a new photo when the job is done.

Dlan, have you gotten any flying in or are the soccer mom's taking up too much of your time?
Jolly, how goes it? What did your buddy say about the airbrake?
Yiotiscy, did you get your retracts installed?

Hello there guys,yes i have installed the retracts according to all the photos that i found in this forum(a very big thank you to everyone for sharing them,they proved very helpful) all i have to do now is to syncronize them to work properly break in the engine and im set to go...or fly!!

the os 70 fl went in like a charm with room to spear too
last pic is a sky raider mach2 which i was playing around with so i gave it a retouch and made it a lot better looking that when i bought it.what do you guys think??

I have two more weekends till 'districts' with softball. The girls are doing great which means no flying for pops. It's all good...

My Tucano is ready to fly. I have such a 'jones' to fly that fired it up in the garage this weekend just to listen to it, I have it bad!
BTW- the FS 70 fit just fine with a few mods...

This afternoon I applied the decal, again bored and wanting to fly. It's warming up out here, 110 F today...

I took my Tiger 60 out on the friday before fathers day, man was that fun!!!!!

Anybody mount a pitts muffler on your tucano? I need some ideas on how to mount this...I could do it like in the pic, but you see the top of the muffler will come out the cowl, and blow oil all over too...or should I turn it sideways and drill new mounting holes for the engine mount and throttle?? I wouldn't mind the head sticking out the other side, I'd rather have the exhaust pointing down too.

Ok, I am going with some robart retracts, I have 1 side of the wing almost done and its looking pretty good, following your china directions rcjets....they arent bad. pain in the a** though, it is a lot of work. I butchered the cowl trying to rig something up so i need to buy a new one.

My OS46SF is side mounted and has a Pitts-style muffler installed. I trimmed the aluminum exhaust tubes down to about 3/4" and used silicon exhaust ententions. Apart from the cylinder head & carb clearance cutout (which eliminates the right scale exhaust) you only have to cut a smallish slot in the bottom of the cowl for the exhaust. Frankly, I think it's the optimal 2 stroke solution and much better than the big muffler sticking out the side. Maintenance on the engine certainly is easy.

Looks really nice, I still like the engine side mounted for easy maintenance. Can you show how the engine mount is mounted? Mine seems to be offset from the center.

The engine is mounted using an adjustable Great Planes mount. I had to drill new holes in the firewall for the mount. The engine is definitely centered.

I finally have some good flight photos including a couple of "down in the weeds" low pass shots. It sure does look better with the gear retracted. I also replaced the balsa block wingtips with CF plate to prevent scuffing during dumb-thumb bounce landings.

Can the guys who used the OS 70 (Surpass II?) post pics and describe the mods (if any) to fit into the plane? I've got one of these engines, for this plane if I decide to buy it. Also, how's the performance with this engine? Thanks! Jon

I have one I have had for about a month very tough believe it or not. Great flying plane very fast with 46 way fast with 55ax. Very good handling plane they have upgraded the parts that come with it mine had all metel clevis now they have gone to the dubro single pin on alerions and elevators. Mine went together well and all lined up great. Put square on it and it was perfect right from box!!! Good luck fly high and often.

The old worn OS46SF seems to be on it's last breaths so the Tucano will be getting an upgrade to the 55AX soon. Will also do a few other touch-ups to get rid of the hanger (and runway [X(] ) rash. I've shot enough in-flight video with the FlyCamOne installed in the cockpit so I picked up a couple of Century Jet pilots, some of that canopy/eject tape from Jolly (see photos in post #80) and will do something a bit more scale. It's a great bird and I've had a riot with it.

I am waiting for my .60 size tucano.

I will setup with an OS 2 strokes .90 size engine and with robart retracts.

I am thinking in using some standard Futaba servos maybe 3003 but i don't know if it is enought.

Latter i will post some pictures from construction.

Wow!! Glad I found this thread!! I just got a tucano 40 with a fox 45BB engine 11X7 wood prop. Engine is new!! It is a bear to start. Fuel tank is mounted way too high, Keeps dumping fuel out of the carb! I'm just frustrated with it right now. Will try and relocate the fuel tank tonight. Love the plane! Just need to figure out the starting procedures. Is inverting the plane the only easy way to start it? I'm a rookie pilot, but definitely looking forward to getting the Tuncano up in the air. from waht I've read the 45BB will work. and may be just what I need at the moment, being a the rookie that I am. Any tips on starting the inverted engine would be greatly appreciated.

My son and I have the Seagull PC9 (one each) and ran a number of engines in them before we got it right. We started with a Magnum 52 FS which would fly the plane and didn't seem to mind being inverted. We then moved on to a Thunder Tiger 54FS which didn't like being inverted at all. We had two of them go into a coma in the PC9. After changing the front wheel assembly to a Dubro fitting we fitted a Saito 72 FS in the nose. Now the plane flies like it is on rails and will do just about anything with consumate ease. The Saito doesn't seem to mind being inverted either. I should imagine that the Tucano would be very similar. Just fit a remote glow so you are not messing around trying to remove glo drivers from an inverted engine (the $10 is money very well spent) and you will have a brilliant aircraft.

As for the retracts well I read somewhere that CM Pro are bringing out a 120 version of the PC9 and that has retracts. Would be interested to see how the bigger version flies

I pulled the fuel tank this morning. First thing I noticed was that the vent tube inside the tank was contacting the top of the tank. Will have to remedy that. It might be easier to mount the engine up right than lower the fuel tank. It will be difficult to cut away the tank support to drop it 10mm. Not much room in the fuse for cutting tools. I'm also thinking that it may help just to add a longer piece of fuel line to the carb, thereby creating a larger "up loop" in the fuel line which should help eleviate the constant flow of fuel to the carb. Will probably get a new fuel tank with metal tubing, just makes sense to me. Also would like to outfit it the a JR Rx. That way I could use one Tx for two of my planes. Don't want to lay down the funds for Dx at the moment. The fuel flow is the issue, as the engine turns over easily at all aspects (vertical, side ways, inverted etc...) with the fuel lines disconnected.

NO this is NOT a First aircraft if not setup perfecty it will be a head ache in the air and you will need some building experiance to set it up and fly
flying on the sim is NOT like flying in the real world the tacano will stay where you put it in the sky and fly there until told other wise it will NOT level out at ALL and it can fly really fast too fast for a first aircraft. I have build 2 of them and both have been speed demons and land fast and do not slow down quickly

Just came across this thread while waiting for my Tucano to arrive. I'll be fitting a four stroke as some have done...it sounds as if it will be totally enclosed. Is there anything I need to watch out for in terms of having adequate cooling, such as a large exit hole in the bottom? Furthermore my inlet/carb will be against the firewall, doeas this interfere with the nosegear mount?

I stumbled on this thread and found the content very useful. Thanks all.
I 've recently bought the 60 sized varient of the Pheonix Tucano here in the UK with the aim of doing a complete ARTF make-over.
The base model looks great but in my view would benefit hugely from some simple mods.
The plan is to strip back and install Robart air up spring down retracts. 
Make modest adjustments to the airframe profile, glasscloth and spray paint airframe and add a good deal of cosmetic work.
I think Pinky and Perky can be given a leave of absence also in favour of more experienced looking customers.
Anybody out there worked on the larger 60 sized plane who can share their experiences.
Would be great to hear from you.
Am thinking of recording progress if anyone is interested.

The Pheonix model falls a little short on scale accuracy compared with yours but then it was never designed as a serious scale model. 
Hope to get started on the Tucano strip down in a few weeks time.

I'd been wanting to get one of these for some time and was finally able to pull the trigger and order one. I was initially discouraged to find that the Tucano 40 was showing as discontinued on Tower Hobbies and Advantage Hobby's web sites but upon further searching discovered that the model was replaced with a new GP/EP version, cool. I placed the order and it arrived today. I just unpacked everything and while doing so realized a number of things, this is a new design and it is RETRACT READY!!! It comes with all the optional parts and basic instructions to install retracts. The front motor area is also very different to accommodate nitro or electric motors and the wing mounting is also completely revised. The retract instructions do not state which retracts or any part numbers for ordering them, however from the pictures it looks like the Hobbico retracts are a good choice. I had only planned to side mount my engine but now will definitely add retracts to mine. I'll post some pictures tomorrow.

UPDATE: I posted some pictures and the instructions for the retracts.
