I am a member of wam a nice grass field and nurcac we fly off the salt flat in the mornings and if you have a dead stick and cannot land there then one better hang it up as you can see for so far and it is all just like a nice soft landing field and in the afternoon we fly off the hot top, i went to st george and tucson arizona last fall for a few weeks and the members were all nice and let me fly there for the whole time i was visiting, crashed my twinstar the first flight and he had just got done telling me that spot looked like you were over it but to come in further and sure enough i am always landing right at the end of a half mile runway and i have to just make it on the end of the runway haha but brought three planes and had a great time. Go to central hobbies and go to there soft mounts and there is a nice write up on mrle hyde he is the man that invented the soft mount, you can buy a cheaper mount but his are the only ones that work as told and tested for vibration.

That must be nice having it flat and able to see for miles down the run way. I fly off grass and the retired members in the club do a great job keeping it cut short. It's only about 600 feet, with trees at each end. We have an absolute boundry at one end with a not so nice neighbor. Check my clubs web site. www.lrccky.com. I plan to run a 20X10 prop on my Sukhoi. I was worried about the clearance on a 21 or 22 inch prop if the grass got high.

I had to go with four inch tires, that will help alot, i broke a few props the first time on the hot top a bounce cost me a prop where on the grass it is alot better also our grass field is pretty long but not very wide, always someone hitting a table on the other side or a fence, i did my first time there, if i had looked there are flags on each end in the center to help, try the four inch tires i liked them alot

Kranie-

Did the BGX totally fit in the cowl? I'll check the head height specs on the BGX and compare to the a Moki 2.10 I have. Also, did you put the rudder servos inside the fuse for balance?

I currently have the GP Extra 300 "Patty Wagstaff" with a Moki 2.10 under the hood. She's a heavy plane at 16lbs-8oz on the fish scale (I have no idea why it's so heavy--no onboard gear that's out of the ordinary). I want to swap all of my gear out of the Extra into this Sukhoi. I'm hoping that Great Planes is making the airframes lighter now, and I'll get some better up-lines for IMAC.

It has been a long time since i had the moki but i think there was just one servo for the rudder, with a pull pull hookup, my great planes a cap 232 sport and with a DA-50 on it she weighed 15 pounds, it is hard to remember each planes when you have had so many, so i write it down on a card and it is in my radio box, size of the best prop also.

Could someone with this plane please measure the diameter of the cowl where the cylinder head is located. I'm trying to figure out if my Moki 2.10 will fit under the hood. I looked up the specs on the O.S. 1.60 last night and my moki is about 7/8" taller than it. Height on the Moki is 4.68" from crank center line to top of head. So, I figure if the cowl is about 10" dia. it should fit.

Thanks,

Doug

It was hard to measure without taking the cowl off, but holding a ruler infront of the cowl, it looks to be approximately 8".

The cowl might go 8 1/2", but not much more. I have the bottom of the cowl cut out for my head on my 46 gasser. It has not been in the air yet. I'm just waiting for good weather.

Thanks for the effort. I just checked Tower's page for the replacement cowl and it says the width is 8". Well, either I have the head hanging out of the side (could help with cooling) or go with an inverted mounting, but then I've got the whole oil collecting in the plug issue to deal with.

sevans16--thanks for the photos. The Moki is 119mm tall and by your photos with the scale, it will definitely hang out.

pilot727--I'll think about mounting inverted. Unfortunately, I'd have to get a new muffler from Bisson (I have the Pitts style now). In the manual for the Moki under F.A.Q.'s it says: "Is it OK to run it inverted?......Yes, but it may be harder to start because of oil collecting in the plug." and "Will I need a glow driver?.......Generally not, but it may be helpful with an inverted installation." Do you think the glow driver is necessary? I just need to decide if not seeing the cylinder head is worth $100+ in extra purchases.

When mounting your engine inverted you will have your head sticking out of the cowl which will be good to keep it cool, on my planes i put a nicaid on my YS-160-DZ and it would just throw it 25 feet and round the edges so i could no longer use it so i now use a extention glow wire and the nicaid plugs into the side of the fuse above the wing, that way you need not have to get under the cowl to unhook the nicaid, there are several different kinds and some just do not work great, on my cap i plug the nicaid into the side of the plane as the other end stays hooked up on the glow plug, sometimes you have to move the wire to make sure it is working and i use the nicaid with the gauge on it so i can tell if it is working, it is easy to use doug, i may have to check my ground wire on the engine to make sure it has a good ground, they have one type that is like a rubber boot, you pull the wire back and a spring on the inside of the boot pulls back and it goes over the top of your glow plug and you release the wire and it stays on your glow plug and when you start the engine you plug a wire into a conector on the side of your plane, when anyone at the field needs something they always come to see me and i have a box right full of nice things, every time i go into a hobby shop i buy things i do not need, but there is always a day that i need it and i have it, on your moki 210 is the glow plug deep inside the head if so, the kind with the boot is not going to work for you, i had the same problem so i went to central hobbies and bought a tettra plug cap and it will go into the head and you just push it onto your glow plug and it will not come off, to get it off there is a spring on the cap and you just put a regular screw driver onto the spring and lift it easy and it will come right off, there is also a yellow hook up that goes onto your glow plug that works great also, let me know if you know what i am telling you and if your glow plug is deep into the head of the moki, Rollie

I did it, wow man. There it is, not a bit of vibration where other gas engines are bouncing off the ground, i paid 140 for the mount, after trying it, i mounted all of my planes with the hyde mount, now after seeing it run many others are also using the hyde mount, worth every penny.

pilot727-

Thanks for the tips on the glow igniter extension. I too have used them, once on a chopper and again on a Hangar 9 P-47 with O.S. .91 mounted inverted. You're right, they work great and make it so much easier to connect/disconnect the glow driver. Both times I used Sullivan's Head Lock Remotes. I seem to remember the wire comes straight out of the plug connector, and thus would clear the head cooling fins. I was also thinking of maybe using their new on board glow driver and eliminate the need for a glow igniter all together--I need to investigate exactly how those things work.

P.S. That D.A. installation looks nice. It looks like the G.P. 27% Cap?

I sometimes have to move the wire around to get a conection, i was thinking today that it could just be my ground wire or where the wire that comes from the glow plug to the jack there is a connection there like a tounge and it plugs into a connector, i think i will unplug that and soilder it and check the ground also and then see how it works, yet i hav no problem with it, i have many spares still in the package, all it is, is the plug for the glow plug and a wire that you can solidwer to the jack part where you plug your wire into, doug call me or go tomt box and give me your home address and i will mail it to you and this is a new kind i have not tried yet but put it over a glow plug and this kind you just push it down onto the glow plug and the only way it will come off is to take a regular screw driver and just take a bit of presure off the spring and it will release the wire end off the glow plug, i think it is the best kind yet, all you need to buy is the other end and soilder the wire, let me know and i will mail it to you tomorrow, THE CANDY MAN
