Eddie, Nice Look'in Cub! Did you have to add lead to C/G with the DLE-20? Are you running multiple battries? Fuel tank in stock location? I plan to power mine the same, reports have been good with the 20, let me know what you think after you ger some air under the tires. Thank's, Mike.

Thanks Mike,
Yes I had to add about 8 ozs of lead on the right side of motor mount and shove the 6 volt 2400 nicad battery into the nose under the tank floor to make it balance.
I used the factory tank in the normal location. My local hobby shop owner and I adjusted the needles a smidge. It sounds great. In fact it started up the first time for me last week and ran good. I just did not want to run it lean at all so we richened it a smidge. My friend at our field has one just like it and the DLE 20 flys it awesome. No more power needed. I may get a chance to maiden it this week. This is the 3rd version of the Hanger 9 J-3 Cub that I have owned. My jet pilot son and I bought a full scale J-3 in Feb of 2006 but sold it in Nov of that year. My life dream was to own a J-3 Cub and it came true. Awesome flights!!! The guy that bought it tore it apart and completely restored it to better than brand new condition in 2010. Just google #N42110 and see all the tear down and rebuild pic's on it from TXAERO in Texas. You will like your J-3.....any more help needed just ask.
Thanks,
Eddie

Hey Bob, Keep us posted on your build. I got my cub last week and coulcn't make up my mind on whether to go glow (OS 160 twin), Gas ( G-26ei) or electric. After reviewing yours and other electric conversions, I decided to go electric. Ordered my E-flite 160 today, going to wait on the esc to see if I can catch a good deal somewhere. Are you planning on doing anything "special" for your battery removal, or are you going to slide them in/out from the cabin door? Also, where are you electric guys venting the warm air out of the cabin, are you opening a vent somewhere in the fuse? I may eventually install floats and I don't want to open a vent on the bottom of the fuse.
Thanks,
Gary akalumpy649

Hey Cannonball where did you get the throttles and stab trim controls ? Or did you make them?

Bob, I made them. I found some pictures on the internet and resized them in paint and printed off. I then made the pieces from 1/16 balsa, painted black and glued the printing on then clear coated. I made the trim handle by bending some 2/56 size wire and grinding off a socket head from a small screw, then expoxying the indented side onto the wire, then glue wire handle to wood. They are not perfect items but look better than none...... No "TOP GUN" quality here, just satisifing me.....Wish somebody would professionally make some of these things for us. Here are some pictures I copied from RCU of a 1/4 scale J-3 Cub a guy built that inspired me. Just look and notice all the detail on this aircraft from the rivits to the sticks that move to the aileron cables running through the pulleys. The J-3 is awesome and looks absolutely full scale. Wish I had this guy's talent. The only minor mistake he made was printing window on the trim handle plate. Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! The other picture is something like I used to make the printings I used to glue on mine.
Thanks,
Eddie of OKC

The J-3 is the most realistic rc model I have seen. The photo's are still on RCU. Just search "All photo's" and type in "Cub" and then go to page 16. The photo for his gallery is in the middle of the page. I emailed him yesterday to inquire if he still had it and he emailed me back last night saying he did and that it was hanging in his living room along with his Hanger 9 J-3. He lives in N E Canada just barely across from N Y state. He thanked me for the compliments also and sent a picture below.
Thanks,
Eddie of OKC

Here is the return email from the owner about the build of the J-3:

Hello Eddie
I build it between 1992 and 1994 and it took more than one thousand hours of work It started with a kit J3 1/4 Premiere (I think it's a British company ) I got plans of real J3 and I take several photos of J3 a friend near Montreal C-GUQQ Any commendes inside the cokpit operate with servos under the floor I made the landing gear suspension in TIG welded cromoly I turn the crank and I operate the window (an option on this J3) there is a real Trim on tail the Weigh si 17.6 pounds I made three flights and I hooked it board for posterity...
Yes i am a J3 Cub lovers
Best regard's
Jean-Philippe

How are you all arriving at the reccomended control throws? What size (in length) servo arms are you using?
I have the single pole alum. control surface horns that are a tad bit shorter than the stock 3 hole ones that i want to use.
Thanks!

Hidaven, I just used the suggested throws in the manual or somewhat close. I use the Super Strength Dubro servo arms #673 on my Futaba servos. The ones I used are 1 1/16 "
long total length and I use the hole farthest from center #5.

Here are some pics of my battery mounting system...the mounting plate gets epoxied to the floor and up against the firewall and the battery tray slides in and is held down with the two thumbscrews

Nice setup Bob, what size batteries are you using? Without starting my cub yet, it looks like you didn't have to grind out some of the dash.

Sorry Bob, I see in a previous post of yours that you are using the Nano Techs. What kind of flight times are you guys getting with the electric set ups?

Been flying mine on 2 5S 5000's. I love it. I can get 15+ minutes of flying easy. I usually fly two shorter 6-7 minute flights and then change packs. The cub is over powered. I can pull straight up vertical for about 300 feet. Cruise around at 1/4 - 1/2 throttle. I have been running Sky Lipo packs but just got in some Haiyin's to try out. I hope to put on some floats this summer.

Setup:
Tacon 160
ICE 85HV
Xoar 19x10 prop

I flew my new Hanger 9 J-3 Cub yesterday with the DLE 20 on it. It weighs 14 1/2 # and flys scale below 1/2 throttle. I purchased some air up Dubro scale goodyear tires/wheels and it really softens the landings along with the spring landing gear system. It flys awesome.

Thanks,
Eddie

Way to go Eddie! Good to see somebody is having some fun, and the DLE-20 is a good match for the H-9 Cub, since it fit's so well with the stock muffler. I take it your using a 17/6 prop with that set-up. As for me, my Cub is still in the box, work (yea, I still have to do that) & life have taken a toll on my fly'in as of late. Still need to maiden a Revolver-70 & a H-9 Thunderbolt that were finished up late last season! My time Will come, Have Fun!!

SkyPilot101,

Eddie here, I am using a zoar 16/8 prop on the Dle20 Cub as well as my GP Waco. Most of the guys I fly with are using the 16/8's on their Dle 20's also. The Hanger 9 Thunderbolt sould be awesome. Is it the bigger one like a 180 size?
When you have time to assemble your J-3 Cub you will love it!! ....... It flys awesome and also looks awesome....
Thanks,
Eddie

harttvboy04 ,

Glad you got your Cub flying... After flying mine yesterday with the Dle20 in it, the Dle30 should be a hotrod such as a Super Cub should be. Good luck on getting it finished.... we need some pictures.....
Thanks,
Eddie
