BTW The black patch under the wings is a piece of black foam rubber that sits on the anchors for the interplane struts to protect the wing when the struts are folded for storage. They are removed for flight.

Not personally, but one of the guys at our club was doing it last winter and it worked fine. The snow was well settled, not fluffy.

Make up a set of skis... Super lite set up and fun to fly... I prefer it over wheels. Floats are super fun on water but they really are heavy and performance killers.

Made a set of aluminum skies for my GP 80" arf cub years ago and have a set of the arf floats for it also. With the wheels, I have all seasons covered. Think I will stick with water ops. for the floats on the 1/4 scale Super Cub. We don't have enough continuous snow coverage here in Virginia to leave floats on that big cub. Might build a larger set of skies for it tho. Much easier to swap out.

Just for information, I ordered a replacement set of landing gear for my Hanger 9 J3 Cub last May. Horizon kept me informed all the while, and delivered the replacement gear yesterday. Could be some of the other replacement parts for the Cub that have been hard to get are now getting back in stock.

Default Skis

Here is my attempt at skis from the drawings from IFLYFLOATS, went a little thinner on wood (3/4" vs 1" as i didnt have any 1" lumber), fun to make, and should be functional, just gotta drill out holes in spindles a little bigger and put bushings in them.

Thanks, some kydex and a heat gun with some aluminum brackets and voila! Scale shovel you'll see on a lot of full scale bush cubs. Now... Anyone got a right wing for me?

Default Skis and new Cowl Paint

Well, got the skis all done, might try them out this weekend. I ended up putting a keel on the bottom of the skis as well from stainless steel welding rod, also painted the cowl black on top and added the super cub decal i got from BARRACUDA.

Here is a video of them before the carbide/keel was added. Very slippery!

Hi HM,
I've been reading this thread, though I haven't read everything. I am planning to build the Hangar 9 PA-18. I actually fell in love with the VVRC 40 Twin this summer when I was at a 3D event in Bowling Green KY. They had one down there in a 77" laser, and it was so sweet. But I'm not a true 3D pilot and I've been looking for a home for the 40 (when they come back in stock) and started seeing articles about guys using them in the Hangar 9 Cubs. I am interested in knowing how well you like J3 model, and if there are any reasons not to get the PA-18. Did I understand you to say that you have made you firewall and maybe the cowl wider? To accept the 40? Maybe you know for sure, whether or not there is actually any physical differences in firewall and cowl size between the two. I love a Yellow J3 as that's the first plane I flew in as a kid. So for me it's really a toss up on airframes, and the J3 is available now even though I won't have a motor for at least another month or so. Is the fit tight enough to make sure to buy the 40 with the 1/4 X 32 plugs to save the 5/8"?

And yeah wouldn't we love to have one of the AW Sport Cub 50cc birds, super sweet. Not this time though. This will be my first gas plane, and the biggest fixed wing that I own. So I'm going with something tried and true. Everything I read about the Hangar 9 Cubs is positive, well except for some complaints about wrinkles in the finish, but I've never had a ARF yet that didn't need some iron/heat gun work.

I've been flying a hopped up Carbon Z Cub and while it's fun, it's not the same as a true scale model. I fear I have been bitten buy the gas bug. Now I am thinking about looking for a trailer...something I swore I would never do.

Speaking of flying indoors, I bought one of those HZ Micro Sport Cub S for my grandson to fly in the gym. First trip out, I said, "Hey I've got to have one of these." Now I have a set of floats for mine and two pair of bush type tires that need to be fitted before this Saturday's flying session. My GS is just starting to transition into aileron birds, and it was a sweet surprise to find out that in beginner mode the Sport Cub S has the aileron/rudder mix built into the Rx. From the reaction we got at the gym, I expect we will see several of them in the next few weeks.

Hope you find a wing soon,

Bert

Just got your post, I persoanlly love the vvrc 40cc just from the sound alone! It is a perfect fit for these planes. I've seen it in a standard j3 as well, but yes I did convert mine to a pa18 and widened the firewall strictly for scale detail. I used the pa18 cowl and painted it yellow, the smaller plug version fits great. Although I'm not super excited about the blue and white scheme I would still jump on the new pa18 in a heart beat, looks great with all the high end details like corregated flaps and ailerons. If your gonna spend the cash get the pa18, could always recover it in the future in the cub yellow... My favourite. Cheers and happy flying

Finally flew this plane again since my crash nearly a year ago. I flew it on my skis I built and they are awesome. Engine is... Powerful. Flaps work great, fly it slow slow slow or... slow. Typical cub and love the way it sounds with the vvrc 40cc twin. Get a few more runs on skis and then floats go back on for season. Bought the plane wrecked... Rebuilt it and modified it into the super cub, flew it ONCE and crashed it after engine failure, rebuilt it... Let it sit for 9 months and finally got the balls to fly it again.

Congrats Heli-Mech, I tried to fly on skis all winter and was never able to, wind and weather never cooperated. Glad to hear everything went well, hope you got some video.

It was just tonight and I did get some video. I am going to borrow my buddies go pro and shove it in the cabin on Saturday if ice is... still ok. We have had a rough winter here too but now that snow is gone and just the ice is left plus the 20 degree Celsius weather is awesome. Will post video from tonight tomorrow. Anyone still thinking of the vvrc 40 cc twin... Do it!

That looks fantastic. When you did the rebuild did you change the color scheme. Is that the PA-18 or the J-3. No matter it's beautiful.
