It's a great airplane but the Saito 100 is way too much engine. You'll need to add weight to the tail no matter what engine you use; this one will require more. And you'll have no need at all for all that power.

My is powered with Turnigyoutruner.
With 5s 4000mah(ESC)and 3s 2200mah (UBEC) centers on 3 1/8"(79mm) from leading edge,withoutadditional weight.
Is it ok for first flight?

Yes,it's ok for the 1st few flights ,after that you'll see whether its noseheavy or not.I'm flying mine with a dualsky 5050ca8 motor 14x7 Apc, 5S4900mah Rhino lipos.A hairy bit nose heavy but a windy day is no problem at all.

As for the balance issue I plan on mounting the servos aft to counter the weight of the engine

Note: the pic gallery is still showing the ASP90FS configuration that was my first choice for the bird ... but nothing else finally than OS engines

Me too have installed a Saito 82 up front .The Pawnee was maidened two weeks ago and despite an error in installing the undercarriage "front to back "which made the plane nose down on take off ,I did manage eventualy to take off and it flew great.Few pics were taken which I would like to share with you.Copy paste please.

Mine showed up yesterday ...sure is a big plane. I noticed right off while looking over the parts they supplied an aluminum motor mount , this thing weigh's a ton "Tossed" ....the rubber tires "though cool" weigh a ton also and will be replaced with foam wheels.
The plastic spinner is outta here, Tru-turn will be used in its place..."Hate plastic spinners"[8D]
The plane, over all, is very nicely done, can't wait to get it in the air.

Maidenedlast weekend.
It was still cold ... and stronger wind was blowing at 90 in relation to the runway ...
Finally, the Piper Pawnee took off

So there seems to be all sorts of engines being used in there. What is everyone's preference? I am talking nitro here but 2 stroke or 4 stroke? .46 or larger?
Any help will be appreciated. I am thinking an OS.72? Not stupidly over powered but just a bit of insurance over a 2 stroke .46? I like sport or semi scale flying but like a bit in reserve to get out of trouble...

I used a e-flite 60 and just cut down the mounts. I think the Scorpion has different mount holes. Not too sure on this however. Good motor for this plane, plenty of power but not too much. If towing I would go bigger though. I think the Scorpion has different mount holes. Not too sure on this however.

Any one know if a Scorpion 4020-10 will bolt to the existing mount holes. How is it a match for this bird.

I have an OS 0.46 in mine and find performance is fine. I think I prefer more scalish performance, but the plane will easily do all acrobatics. I think about half throttle on an 0.46 would probably be nearly scale in terms of thrust.
This plane really leans into turns (like a motorbike) . In fact, the wing dips alarmingly for someone not used to it. Try some low altitude (crop dusting) manouveres at which the plane excels. With flaps down, it will crawl along.

I was driving back from Northern CA on I-5 today where you see allot of dusting going on, but today I had to stop and watch this guy fly his Pawnee. Really tight stall turns 15' off the dirt.Just awsome!! The model flies the same way, What a sight, could watch them all day.. Watching the real thing makes me think how better to fly scale with mine.

RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
After wanting this plane for a few years now I finally picked one up from the LHS this past weekend. Now I've got to figure out if I want to go ahead and use the O.S. .91 4 stroke that I have on hand or wait until I come across a good price for a Saito .82 4 stroke.
I really want to use the Saito to power the plane but I don't know if I'll have the patience to wait! LOL

I think the 0.82 would be better. The plane's personality really shines at 'crop dusting type manouveres, stall turns, fast aerollin turns and steady. low altitude tracking. In my opinion, the plane is more rewarding to fly with 0.46 2-stroke or up to about 0.80 4-stroke. No amount of engine will make it go much faster (the airframe has too much drag) and the plane is designed to fly on the wing rather than the engine.
