The smoke spray system will be
easier on that gasser. I have
never used a smoke system, but
I understand that a 4 stroke doesn't
generate enough heat to smoke well.
Will need to investigate, but any
input will be appreciated.

Looks prety decent for a nitro smoke set up....
Very possible!
something to think about anyway...

You had your Saito quit on you?? That doesn't usually happen. Hope you figured out the problem...

Justin,
It does look good.I just didn't
think 4S's generated enough heat.
I have been wrong before!
I used a beefed up tail wheel assy
that I found in my junk/spare parts
drawer. The one from the kit will
work, I'm sure, but since I had
the other one... I think a 1" diameter
wheel is minimum size...
I also was miffed when I counted
only three servo hatches in the bag.
I was about to come in here & whine,
but I'm glad I looked at the wing set
first!
Who makes dummy engines heads?
I want to match my .91's head on the
other side.
Gear, rudder & tail wheel mounted.
Working on servo hatches now.
Got no extensions. Dough!...[X(]

This one is a electric version. Running a way bigger motor than some say is nessesary but I like the low down the field then 90 degrees up to a wing over like the real ones do. Had to make the light flash too. Should be flying it next weekend. Tomorrow looks like rain and lots of wind. This has got to be one of the fastest ARFs I have ever assembled. Everything fits, Thanks Hanger 9! See the mess on the table? Thats what happened after a couple cups of coffee and the brite idea to make the light on top flash.

RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
Well, my bird finally got kicked out of the nest this morning. Our field as filled with large, deep puddles from last night's rain, but I was game. Two of my buddies were out at the field to watch me try to get my act together. I fueled up the girl and wanted to see how my Magnum .80 4S would tolerate a 13X8 prop. She didn't want to turn up to a decent RPM to suite me, so I went down to a 13X6 which was much better (this engine is still being broken in after being rebuilt). Another 5-10 minutes of trying to get my nerve up, especailly since the winds were starting to pick up and of course becoming a gusty crosswind. Engine started and everything is sounding good, I did some taxi tests. Everything looked good, so I lined up for take-off towards the driest part of the runway and slowly advance throttle. Tail is flying and it breaks ground in about 30 ft - not bad for a soggy grass field. Two clicks of down, 5 clicks of left aileron and its hands off. After flying around for a little while, I made the first landing at full flaps, which really didn't slow it down that much.. The landing was long to get over the puddles, but it's down.. The only bad part was the nose over due to the wheels hitting some deep water. I made one more flight and really started to enjoy the plane. The white color disappered in the clouds, but the contrasting blues helped out a little. I'll try to remebr how to post pictures in a few minutes.

Here are some pictures of mine, Mr. Ken at his workplace, and the nice wet field conditions. The puddles in the pictures are the shallower ones next to the pits. According to Mr. Weatherman, we got a little over an inch last night. Needeless to say the plane would have flown off the runway with floats!!

RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
Guys,
I'm rather new to this amazing hobby and have been smitten by the looks and quality of the Hangar 9 Piper Pawnee. It seems that the model is fairly forgiving and easy to land. Would this be a reasonable choice of model after graduating from a PT40 trainer. I really like the scale appearance of the model and would like to progress to a low wing trainer or something similar.
Any advice is most appreciated.
Regards
Mark

Mark, I have not flown mine yet, actually it just arrived yesterday. Looking at the design of the plane and considering how it should fly I think it would be a good move for you after you are totally comfortable with your PT40. I would suggest that if you go that route get some help from a seasoned flyer for the initial flights to get it trimmed and make sure every thing is good to go.

This is a great ARF, the nose heavy problem is the only thing that can use some help. I will be flying mine as an electric conversion so by moving the lipolys I can get it to balance. I stuck a Dave Patrick tail wheel on mine to give it just a little more of a scale look and this really helped out the balance. With the heavier tail wheel and moving the reciever pack back just a bit mine balanced out fine. Here are a couple shots of the tali wheel.

Went to a display day yesterday where they had a scratch built crop duster doing lollie drops. Does anyone think it would be possible to setup the Pawnee to do this?

What i can't figure out is the ken doll seems to be what all is considering to pilot the plane, but mine after cutting out the seat platform and notching the seat to lower it into the cockpit about 1/8'' i still had to pull the poor boys pants off and grind his but cheeks flat and still his head hits the top of the canopy. I'll heave to make him work now because my little girl told mommy he looked like he had diareah and somthing happened o him. I had to confes up. So what do you think i had to do. Go buy another one and it looked better than the one that had diareah. LOL,[&o]

runner,
The tail wheel looks good.
Better than mine!
Can you post some detailed pics
of the head rest? I like it too.
What figure do you have in yours.
I have checked Walmart K-Mart, & they
don't have Ken's or GI Joe's...
I cross threaded one of the strut ends.
If my LHS can't get some, I'll make one
at work...
Keep it!

smthlndr- yes, Mr. Ken had a bit of plastic surgery to smooth down his bubble butt. He screamed a lot , but I told him to suck it up and just bite down on the stick. Also, the is nothing left from the bottom of the seat. Mr. Ken is still sitting a little high, but his head is not touching anything.

Someone wanted a photo with a Saito .100 mounted, here you go. Prop wont fit with a little bitty 2-1/4 spinner. I'm sure there's Pawnee's without spinners on them.......arn't there? MM

Before I sign off and head for "Slumber Land", have any of you guys had problems with the 2/56 pushrods on the elevators bending. Seems awful lite wire and the distance from the exit port to the control horns makes me feel uneasy. I'm trying to use 4/40 but there's just enough bind in the tubes to cause a little friction. Using a 3305 Futaba on it and it sure drains the 1500 mah battery fast, looking at the voltwatch go pretty close to the red with a full charge does'nt inspire confidence it will hold. Comments please. Thanks, MM

Johnny C, my pilot came out of a tank I have sitting here in my work area. I just had to cut the seat out so he sits right on the balsa floor. I left the sides to cover this up, and I cut his legs off to get him to fit better. The roll cage is just some bamboo sticks zaped together and spray painted. Here is another shot before the canopy went on. And the headrest was out of a 1/5 scale Waco that came in contact with the ground some time back.

Just curious, were you able to use the supplied motor mount with your Saito 82. Did you have to modify the fire wall? I originally was going to use one of my Magnum 91 4 strokes but it is too wide for the supplied motor mount and I really do not look forward to ripping out the fire wall to install a new one.

Thanks, that is good news. I may try the Saito 82 or a Magnum 80. One other question, I have never used the type of motor mount where the engine is clamped to the mount instead of using 4 bolts. How do you view this?

bladerunner1955,
Looks like you have a nice setup! I was curious... What size DPM tailwheel is that? I have an extra one that came with my DPM PA-18 Super Cub that I was thinking about using. Thanks in advance!
