I was casing the Hobbies site tonight when I came across this deal.....
Competition runs there for over 700$ for a QB


I had looked at the forum to see if anyone hase picked this up and built it....

When you look at the competition, it seems like a great deal.....
Not sure how it flies though or how it holds up.\
I also do not have a High output 80cc engine to place in it right now anyway... but I may buy it and hold on to it for a later date...???

Anyone see this aircraft?
I noticed that Lanier 94 inch Yak is on HOLD, and the Extra has been DISContinued?
Seems the company and it's products are in Limbo Hiatis???

Since Lanier/Goldberg sold they are in a bit of limbo, one of my sponsors used to be a dealer from them and I have had everything they produced, the 94 in Edge and Yak ARF's have all the hardware and fuel tank with it and are awesome with a 80 or 85cc on it. They both balance out great and fly hands off both inverted and upright, the best thing about the edge is it tumbles better and gets much flatter in a flat spin. They both are very stable in a harrier and land nearly hands off if you don't try to lighten them up any more than they are out of the box, they are very lite as is. I just put my Yak in last week and sold the Edge because I fly Dietrich's now nearly exclusively, if you really want a 75/85cc plane the one that will be on the market in March is going to be the way to go.

Those are real nice planes....
I might just wait and pick up a EF Yak 110" and still uses a 100cc engine!!!! It will be stellar to say the least....
As long as the weight can stay down.... Funny because I just read about the GP Extra that has a 110 WS and uses a 150cc gas engine!
I think that GP is behind times on that one!....

I wated a yak, but you say that the edge does better/flatter spins ect so it may be the way to go.....

Well, looks like Iā€™m going to be the one. I got the new 94ā€ Lanier Edge 540 ARF for Christmas. Am I the only one who has one? Or am I the only one goofy enough to post this? Anyway, I thought I would share my experience so farā€¦..

This is going to be a bit of a slow process due to the fact that this thing is not cheap to equip and I still have to recover from Christmas. Keep checking back and Iā€™ll update as I go. If anyone wants particular pics. or have specific questions let me know.

So far, I can tell you this; this mother trucker is huge!! It comes in three boxes. One of the three boxes said it will weigh 21-22lbs. flying weight. I would say more like 23-23.5lbs. for three reasons:
1. When is it ever as light as the box boasts? (just my opinion)
2. Iā€™m putting in a Sky writer smoke system
3. Me likes the glue!!

9 servos with at least 100oz. of torque are required. I will be using 2 Hitec HS-5625MG in the rudder, 2 Hitec HS-5645MG in each wing, 1 Hitec HS-5645MG for each elevator and a HS-81MG for the throttle and choke. (Yes that is my empty wallet in the pic.)
Radio is a Spektrum DX-7 on a Power System Sport Plus and two Relion 2600s.

The only big thing left to get is the Engine. I want to use the new Brillelli 80cc that is coming out soon, but I donā€™t think I am that patient. (It is not due out for another couple of months.) I think Iā€™d rather get that engine when it comes out and put it on the plane Scott suggests. (Scott puts out a nice engine. I have his 46gt. Give his engines a try if you have the chance http://www.scottellingson.com/ ). So my pals at the club and I have narrowed it down to three:
1. ZDZ 80 RV-J ā€œSuper 80ā€
2. DA-85
3. 3W-85Xi
OK, Iā€™m not looking to spark off some engine war, but if any one has had the chance to compare two or more of these side by side and has an opinion please let me know. I understand this is a Chevy, Ford, Dodge type argument so letā€™s not get crazy. By the way the manufacturer used the ZDZ ā€œSuper 80.ā€

Love its:

1. Covering is out of this world. I know Great Planes took over Lanier, but Lanier is not using Monocote. This covering is light, tight and has stayed that wayā€¦Very nice
2. Construction is very light and strong. I give a solid A for fit and finish.
3. Hardware is about 90% on the mark. I think I am going to use most of it. (See the donā€™t love its for the other 10%)
4. Good strong mounting for the landing gear. As you can see in the pics. the gear mounts to aluminum brackets that are mounted to the beefiest part of the fuselage.
I think this is the first ARF I donā€™t feel the need to beef up the gear section.
5. Removable horizontal stabilizer.
6. It fits in my carā€¦.yes!! (Iā€™d hate to have to walk to the field with this thing. Itā€™s like 18 miles from my house).
7. Customer service is top notch. I was missing a couple of small parts and Great Planes rectified the problem posthaste.
8. The control surfaces are pre-drilled for the Robart style hinges.
9. A Laser cut servo box is provided that will fit both standard and mini servos. It looks like you can mount this where ever it is convenient. Very nice set up.

Donā€™t love its:

1. The clevis horns for the removable horizontal stab are held in place with e-clips. It looks strong but snapping an e-clip on and off each time I remove the stab ainā€™t my
idea of fun. Plus with my luck the thing will fly off and be lost in the grass at the field in no time. I will be replacing it with Hanger 9 10-32 clevis horns that have screws
and nuts (part # HAN3615). (in the pics, Lanier is left. H9 is on the right)
2. The fuselage is a bit too narrow at the back to fit the standard size servos that I choose for the rudder. They oppose each other on each side of the fuselage. If you put
both in they will not sit flush against the fuselage because they touch each other.
3. Not designed to accept ā€œcan typeā€ mufflers.
4. (edit) I paid $579 for this ARF one month ago. Now it is $400 (edit)

I think that is a short list. I love the plane and have no problem overlooking the three somewhat insignificant gripes. (edit) I would have to say #4 is not so insignificant. (edit)

By the way, the servo problem has been addressed. My good friend Sotos, who owns Hampton Roads Imaging. He cut doublers for the servos at the back of the fuselage. (See pic.) He did it at very good price. Sotos is a master at what he dose and if you ever find yourself in the market for laser cutting or etching work, send him an e-mail. He can be reached by e-mail at: [email protected] . Just as an aside, he has designed some wicked cool 3D foamies called Hyper Actives that are a ton of fun. People swear by them down here. Drop him a line and get one!!

Wow, I am just a bit upset. I paid $579 for this ARF in December ā€˜07. Now it is available for $399 a month later. I guess good things come to those who wait. This thing is a steal at $400. Heck $579 is a good price. But it would have been nice to put $179 toward an engine.

Dose anyone know where I can get a good CF spinner? I know Chief Aircraft has some. Any where else have them?

Do you think your original estimate of 23 -23.5 AUW is correct ? I'm thinking of grabbing one of these while they last but 22 # would be a much better target (using a 3W 80xi).
If you get a chance could you get an accurate weight ?

Lanier was known as the heavy plane before the acquired Goldberg, now the planes are much lighter and still as strong, my Yak that I had was 20.12# AUW and my Edge was 21.
1. when building yours put the batteries (or batteries if you are only using one) for the receiver in the motor box opposite side of your slits for mounting your ignition battery (you will have to make them) if you are running a ZDZ, 3W, DA single in the 80cc class.
2.I mounted my batteries on the right side of the motor box if looking from the front ignition on the outside receiver batteries on the in.
3.I ran all my servos for the elevator and rudder in the tail with a push pull set up for the rudder (but it would have flown great with only one 5955tg Hitec in the pull-pull set up) and the planes balanced out on the back of the wing tube which is actually where you want it because the plane is perfect there.
4.Try to keep all your weight right down the center of the plane as much as possible meaning don't mount a bunch of heavy stuff on the belly keep it up as close to the thrust and center line as you can, it makes the plane much nicer and pretty much no coupling for knife edge flight.

I hope this helps you guys, they are great flying planes.

I just hinged the wings and sealed the gaps. Iā€™m assuming that if I went into details about things like hinging I would bore you to death. But if you want details Iā€™d be happy to give them. I also ran into a small problem. The openings for the servos in the wing are too small by a good bit. (The openings in the fuse are fine.) I think what I will do is use the plates that Sotos cut for me (see post #10) as a template to cut the holes larger. I think I will also have to add a bit of ply inside the hole to reinforce it there is some in there but it is very narrow. I think I may split the wood if I don't put more in.

As for the weight I think you could build light and get to your target. Remember Iā€™m adding unnecessary junk like: the Skywriter smoke system that requires another battery and fuel tank. The Smart Fly system and the two batteries that come with that is going into my plane as well. Choke servo, ā€˜spose that could go. And like I said, ā€œme likes the glueā€!!

I donā€™t have an accurate scale so Iā€™ll have to sneak into the post office and use the scale there. Also I donā€™t have my engine yet so it will be less that weight. Iā€™ll try to do that in the next couple of days. My current method: get on my bathroom scale alone and cry at the number I see. Next I grab the airplane and step back on. Then do the math.

If you are debating the plane I say get it. $400ā€¦ā€¦ get it! Iā€™m still a bit heated about my $179

This is a reply that G-man sent to me when I asked what engine he used. I thought it was very informative both the engine and the servos he used.

and it flew it like it was a paper plane. On the wings and elevators I used Hitec 625's and on the rudder I used a Hitec 645 all with no blow back and the plane was great. I had one of my Dietrich's 42% 260s at the AMA show in Ontario Ca. this weekend or I would have got back to you sooner.

Please keep the details of your build coming. Regarding your question about the spinner, I would go with a 4" since the back plate will space out 1/4". The 4" spinner would look right but not a 4.25" IMO.

I used Sotoā€™s doubler plate as a template and a roto tool with a router attachment on the wing. We have the technology!!

Also, upon closer inspection it was only the top layer of ply that needed to be shaved to make the hole in the wing the correct size. It hung over the hole to form a ā€œledgeā€ of sorts. There was no need to add more ply inside the wing. I probably could have done it with an xacto blade but why not use a cool tool when given the chance.
