Great Planes Viper 500

RE: Great Planes Viper 500
I've seen a few in the air.
It is a Quickie 500 pylon racer, meaning it can go pretty fast and take hard turns. Looks like a pretty predictable "goes-where-you-point-it" plane when slowed down. It even glides...
I think some of the guys had trouble with the wheels: wheels falling off or not turning.

lol ah i had wheels falling everywhere on some of my planes before, easy to fix though. Looks like a nice fast plane.
I had trouble with my fast flying wing over 80 miles per hour but i wunder if its strong for doing crazy stuff. I wounder
if the wing is strong too.

RE: Great Planes Viper 500
The plane is made for pylon racing. It can take extreme high G turns and is capable of going very fast. The control surfaces are very small and the ailerons are located inboard on the wing rather than outboard. This design allows for great stability at high speed but is not good for "crazy stuff" aerobatics. You can loop, roll, fly inverted and even knife edge, but that's about it.

RE: Great Planes Viper 500
With a sport .40 / .46 the viper is capable of going 120 mph.
With a Nelson or Jett .40 racing motor, 160mph+ is possible (and the wing can handle it).
It is capable of extreme G hard turns or loops, but very limited with Ailerons authority, so rolls will be slow. The V-tail is effective, and I have seen them to something close to a snap (more like a barrel roll).
The plane was mainly for racing and just going fast, if your looking for something aerobatic, this probably is not what your looking for. The wheels are garbage (don't even attempt to use them, they will fall off), the covering on many that I have seen is VERY loose and wrinkled (so be prepared to iron/heat gun that), the fuse just in front of the V-Tail is structually weak in my opinion and needs reinforcing, things are tight in the fuse (Mini servos / receivers / batteries help, but it is tight), and lastly the incidence of the tail has been questionable on some versions. Shimming the tail is typically needed to fly it level without adding trim to the elevators.
Other than that, its not a bad plane, if you want to go fast.

RE: Great Planes Viper 500
Just finished mine got a OS 55 on and wil run a 8.75x7.5w APC prop. The wheels are crap wil get better ones from LHS tomorrow. The covering overall not to bad some loose points but not really bubbles- nothing searous. Needed to shift the battery forward + lead in nose to get cg correct. The tank is small so time in the air wil be limmeted to about 5 - 8 minutes I would gues, wil see tomorow how fast it can go cant wait for the maiden on this one

Maidened today this thing is an arrow tracs nice and straight only needed 1 click up elevator, very stable. I used high rates for take off and landing only on full throttle high rates is just to much. At low altitude its a blast screaming past and very stable at slow speed, landing is easy, had no wind today so wil need to see how it handles wind. If you are looking for some adrenalin pumping at a reasonable price this is defanatly a plane to consider

I have one and love it.. goes together super fast... I put a ST 40 in it, as this was to be the standard motor in the club races we were going to have here locally (never got off of the ground). Anyway lots of fun if you want to go fast, and it's small enough to fit in most vehicles in one piece.. just don't expect any aerobatics out of it.

o yes, it's easy to fly.. and it can actually fly quite slowly. just follow the control throws that are in the manual and you should be fine. The only problem that I can think of is that with the thin wing the plane doesn't slow down very well for landing aproach, so you will probally over shoot your first couple of aproaches.... guys that race these planes usually just kill the engines and land them dead stick...but I would say get to know the plane first before attempting that... the only other thing is that the plane sits pretty low to the ground which doesn't allow for much prop clearance. I run a 9in prop and it always cuts the grass on take off, I would imagin taking off and landing from pavement can easily cause a broken prop unless you are extremely careful.

Probably good to hand launch into the wind. I flown planes for years, but haven't flow nitro for years, I have a flying wing (f27c stryker from parkzone). Pretty fast
also but around 80 min. So I bet someone already mod the wing to accept longer alerons i bet. I wont have no problem but I damn do want a fast plane. Anybody
know any faster but better aerobatic?

RE: Great Planes Viper 500
i would not mod the ailerons myself at speed it reacts very fast as is. For airobatic that is fast maybe try a sundowner or revolver they are rather fast

Fast and aerobatic. Global tequila sunrise with a GMS .32 engine.
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXK422&P=7
WARNING, this plane is extreme high performance and not for the faint of heart, it likes to fly fast and will snap like a mo foe !!!!
But going from the F-27 stryker I think that the viper will be fast enough and aerobatic enough for you. The aerbatic capability of the viper greatly outweighs that of the stryker. I say go with a viper a .46 size engine and a 9x8 prop. Good luck.

RE: Great Planes Viper 500
the lanier predetor is a better choice only because the covering is much better. basically they are the same. start out with a good engine like a os46fx or ax, or the tt40 as mentioned before. get used to the speed and hot landings. upgade in the future to a jett sj50,or just add a jett muffler to your engine for more rpm. jett also sells weels for these planes, i think.
