Hello, run a search for Ed Moorman and send him a PM or email. He is a wealth of knowledge on jobs like that.

I'm building a BS-60 as we speak, and also making it a taildragger. I'm seriously considering a servo driven tail wheel. I already bought the tail wheel assembly and I think its the best bet for me ...

Timato, download the manual for the Giant big stick and see how they did it on that one. it would be similar to what you would want to do.

Just a thought!

Hi,
I did this using a Sullivan tail wheel setup. I mounted the bracket to the bottom of the stab. Cut a notch in the TE of the stab and ran a "Z or dogleg "" shaped wire up to the rudder. One end of the wire I epoxied into the rudder, the lower end I inserted in the swivel (round piece with hole for the wire) on the bracket. It has worked fine for me.

I did this conversion and it was easy. Moved my servos for the rudder and elevator to the tail. That left me plenty of room in the fuse to mount a small servo for the tailwheel. Works perfectly. Oh - the reason for moving the servos to the tail was to balance the Thunder Tiger 1.20 on the nose but I would have done it anyway.

We fly a lot of these:

[link=http://www.speedworldrcf.com/pictures/bratwurst_bombers.html]Bratwurst Bombers[/link]

These pictures are old, before we started converting them to tail draggers. We overpower them with up to YS 1.10s so they need some beef up work. I think we have found all the weak spots. If you are not going to overpower it, you probably only need to do number 1 below.

The four weak areas in order of importance:

1) Wing center front tab
2) Firewall
3) Fuse at stab leading edge
4) Fin where it attaches to fuse and stab

1) The stock wing front mount is wood on wood so it will burn the wood away causing slop and changing the wing incidence during flight. This tab is also weak and will break off in high-G maneuvers. Picture shows carbon fiber sheet on both sides and brass to prevent burning.

2) Mix some epoxy with milled fiberglass and glop it around firewall joint with fuse. Kind of hard to get at but a bent epoxy brush with an extension does the trick. I also add a 1/8” lite ply doubler firewall on the front.

3) To solve this I add a 1/8’ ply piece from in front of stab to the tailwheel. This both strengthens the weak spot and gives a mount for the tailwheel. The tailwheel is a standard setup with the wire going into a hole in the rudder. A plastic bushing is in the stab to take the load.

4) For this, I drill up from the bottom through the fin base and epoxy in carbon fiber tubes. Dowels would work also.

I put a 1/4” ply (real plywood) plate in the fuse to move the main gear to a position 9” from the firewall front to the gear front.

Thats the DuBro Semi-Scale tailwheel assembly, found here:
http://www.shopatron.com/product/part_number=956/101.0

I bought it at my LHS. Its a clean design, and after 20 flights or so its performed perfectly. Adjustment was easy to get the plane tracking straight on the ground, and the turning diameter is excellent.

Hope this helps! FlySafe! Larry (Larrys4227)
