RE: Great Planes Extra 27% 330s
Hey guys. Just got one of these this week. I'm just wondering what are you guys doing with the opening in the canopy? I didn't see anything in the manual about it. Why is it left open?
Also, i'm running my bcma spe 43 on it. I Can't wait to fly it.

For you guys that are running 40cc or larger gassers on this airframe, what if any beefing up of the firewall and other areas are you doing? Is it fine "as is" or do some mods need to be made?

RE: Great Planes Extra 27% 330s
Hello all, Moki Man here with a report on my Extra so far, wings completed with Futaba S9402s, elevators done with S9206s, rudder pull pull next with JR 8411, still debating between Moki 1.8 or 2.10, I know it will be a rocket with either and right now I'm leaning toward the 2.10 cause I will be adding a slimline smoke pump and sullivan's new on board glow lighter, all that stuff together adds about another pound of weight and it will still be absolutely ballistic with the Great Moki up front. That darn smoke muffler cost me both arms and part of my left leg so I'll have to recruit one of you to hold the TX for the maiden, as of now scheduled for mid July. Also trying out some other new goodies, lighten back plate spinner, vess prop, kirby's graphics, Li-on Batts, to mention a few. Will give a full report on all......now come on you all, lets get those 330's airborne, I'm an over the road trucker only home every other weekend, you all have no excuses....till next time.......James......THE MOKI MAN

I'm going to maiden mine today if the winds aren't to bad. I just have to install the cowling and wheel skirts. I finished my smoke pump and tank yesterday. I need some smoke fluid. I might just have to use diesal and atf for now.

BUT! If i was going to put a larger engine in it, lika a 50cc, no i would not do any mods to beef up the FW.
Looks strong enough AND i´m sure Tim and his friends at the R&D department already anticipated that a great deal of us
would put a 40-50cc gasser in the nose...Also it´s already constructed for and tested with the Fuji 43cc.
In my experience from seeing lots of IMAC planes, its not the FW but other parts coming loose from engine vibrations.
Thread-locker is the key word here...

RE: Great Planes Extra 27% 330s
The OS 1.60 is a WONDERFUL engine... I've had two of them; one on a Goldberg Pitts 12 Monster, and most recently on the GP Gene Soucy Extra 300S. But, I've got a DA-50 sitting on the shelf, and also an OS BGX-3500. I havent run the 3500 yet, but I had the DA in a H9 27% Extra 260 and LOVED it, regardless of what some guys seem to think about that combo. I'm thinking either one of these will work well on this airframe.

Anybody mounting a DL 50 in this plane may want to check out my post over on the Engines forum.

RE: Great Planes Extra 27% 330s
Just thought i'd share some pics of mine with smoke setup. I had to add 6oz of weight to the tail for cg. 16 oz. tanks for gas and smoke fluid. Anyone know about how long i should be able to fly with this much fuel? I'm running a 43cc engine.

Hey Druff.
Nice garage. I see you have some dirt bikes. I quit racing MX just last seasonrode a KTM 450.
I have my timer set to 14 minutes when I was running my Fuji 43. When I land I had at least 1/4 tank of fuel left. But the time will be nearer maybe like 10 minutes when you are breaking in the engine and running it rich.
Sorry about the tail weight. If you would have mounted your rudder servos in the tail that would have helped (eliminated the ballast?). But I did the same thing as you - I went to the pull/pull with a gas engine. The one I am flying now took 1 oz. in the tail and my other one took 2 oz. in the tail.
Guys, BE CERTAIN TO USE THREADLOCKER ON YOUR CANOPY HATCH SCREWS AND CHECK THEM BETWEEN FLIGHTS TO MAKE SURE THEY REMAIN TIGHT. Especially with these "gassers."
Good luck!!!

RE: Great Planes Extra 27% 330s
Hey thanks Tim! I race dirtbikes for about five years back in the 90's. Still play ride on my YZ450 and some pitbikes.
I'm not too worried about the weight that i had to add. This will be my first plane with smoke so i will probably get tired of it and take it off someday, for more performance.
The directions said something about using different servo arms. Was i supposed to get some in this kit?

Hey, I see you're from Washington. Isn't that over by, oh, where was that MX track south of Bloomington? Or is Washington up near Joliette? I raced at Joliette (I'm sure I've spelled that incorrectly!) a few times, but mostly Casey, Effingham and Taylorville. Last year I was leading the +40A class in points when I decided to quit halfway through the season (to spend more time with my great wife and step-daughter and get back into RC more!).
Oh yea, back to airplanes;
We recommended the longer, Great Planes servo arms if you need to get the outrageous 3D throws. They're listed in the front of the manual as "Additional Items Needed For Completion" or whatever. They're not included with the kit.
But if you're sport flying or even doing IMAC, I would use the DuBro HD servo arms because they are shorter so you can have "normal" ATV's (near 100%). I have the shortest DuBro arms you can get and can get the high rate throws listed in the manual with my ATV's at around 100% I believe. And in IMAC (Sportsman), I do every maneuver on low rates, except for the stall turn when I switch to HR rudder, then go back to low rate on the way back down.
Okay logging off now.
I'll check in tomorrow.
Tim

RE: Great Planes Extra 27% 330s
Builds are looking good....
I raced KAWASAKI 250 in1990 was my last bike...... Last year to race....
I got on my friends Honda HR 250 1996 (in 1996) and thought it was a works race bike.....
Funny how that works..... Trickle down theory does work!!
Krproton....
So are the prices of the GP performance series ARF's going to continue to rise any time soon??? Or have they stablized???
Saw that the Yak wentup 30.00$

I had '99 KX 250, then an '02 CR 250, then KTM four-strokes ever since.
I know nothing about the prices (ARFs, kits, engines, whatever). I read one of the threads today where guys were talking about ARF prices going up, but as I work in R&D I have no knowledge what-so-ever about cost, profit, prices, etc. I just build stuff! Sorry I don't know, but that's just not my area.

RE: Great Planes Extra 27% 330s
Prices are getting higher probably due to the weak Dollar, GP uses $ to pay for it´s Chinese factory right?
(Labour costs, materials etc)
Also due to the increasing oil prices which makes things more expensive to ship.[:@]
Here in Sweden were not complaining about the weak Dollar though...R/C stuff is half price in the US (e.g. Tower) compared to
buying from the local hobby shop.

RE: Great Planes Extra 27% 330s
I also have them both and the GP is every bit the plane as the AW, AW's QB does a lot more of the work for you and their instruction manual is second to none but the GP is right there in quality and finish, AW has better hardware but GP's is just fine for this size bird, and I'm going to put this out here for all to see, I've been at this for 30 plus years, the GP's covering job is better than AW's, my final word on it is this......I AM VERY, VERY, VERY, EXTREMELY HAPPY WITH BOTH OF THEM............MM

I am using a DL 50 with a KS pipe. It weighs 16 lbs 1 oz and has tones of power and unlimited vert. The power of the DL on the pipe is awesome. It is really a different sound compared to my other DLs on pitts mufflers.

Hey Kfoster,
do you have your DL in the GP 27% Extra? I don't know what the KS pipe looks like. Did you have to do a lot of work to get it to fit in the Extra?

My clear canopy just ripped off yesterday. It was about 100 yards out over a corn field. Guess i'll just have to order another one.

Tim, did I read correct when you said you are using a single 1400mah 2/3A battery for all your digital servos? If so I have been doing up my planes over powered. I have been using either two 2000mah AA packs or one 4200mah SC pack. I have never measured how much I am using, but I do know I can fly for two days in a row without charging. If I am safe using only one 2000mah battery or two of the 1400mah ones I could save alot of weight.
