Feedback on SuperTigre G-2300 Dual BB Ringed
I was looking at this engine on Tower. $149.99 for an engine this size, does anyone know if there is a catch? I have seen the smaller SuperTigers run and seem to run well but wanted to know if this is a good deal for a larger plane project I am working on. Thanks much!!!

RE: Feedback on SuperTigre G-2300 Dual BB Ringed
I have been running an original (Italian build) one of these in a 1/4 scale Waco, swings a 19x8 Bolly GF at adequate RPM. Original carb was swapped fairly quickly for a Jett carb matched to the G2023. Haven't touched the mixture since. Three choked turns, nice squishy sounds, heat on, one back flick and that's about it. Seems to be almost bulletproof, but does need a careful run in with castor only fuel. I know many will say that 10 to 12% oil is enough, but have never run less than 15%, always with a bit of castor in the oil mix (Coolpower pink). Hasn't been apart yet and the bearings still feel smooth. Compression is still improving! I have purchased another one cause I have plans for a companion for the Waco and I can't think of a better engine for scale models.

The carb is really the only issue for most Super Tigers. I use Perry carbs on my 2000 and 2500's. The 2300 is not like the other big Tigers and requires 18% oil fuel between 5 and 15% nitro. For $150 for the motor plus $40 or so for a Perry carb you can't beat it. They are bullet proof and run forever.

That' s funny (strange) bdtsr, my G2023's been running for over eight years, but it will not run with any nitro in the fuel. I have tried it on everything from 10 to 3% but it won't idle, accelerate or hold peak unless the fuel has 0% nitro. 85/15 works for me, and a number of others too...as for fuel burn, depends on the prop and throttle position, I use a 16 oz tank and it's still half full after a normal (6~10 min) flight.

When ST came out with the 2300, they included a notification that stated that the 2300 is not like the older big Tigers and required 18% oil like their smaller engines. Most of us are using 10 to 15% nitro in everything. I even run 15% nitro in one of my 2500's which turns a Mezjlik 18X8 at 8900rpm. I think the % of nitro is a matter of choice. I do have a few engines I have to run on 5% (ASP 1.20 for example).

My 2300s run great using the original carb. if you change to an aftermarket muffler you will want to adjust the muffler back pressure to get good fuel feed and carb operation as many aftermarket mufflers do not provide the same back pressure as the original carb. I will say that my experience is with the 2300s from China, not the ones from Italy.

Lexmar,
I have one and a friend of mine has one. Both are excellent. Lots of power and, for their size, they sip fuel. Can't beat them for the price.
Good luck,
Darrol

RE: Feedback on SuperTigre G-2300 Dual BB Ringed
I have 4 of these engines, one in the GP Giles, 1 in a kit built Super sportster, one in a scratch built gliger tow plane and one yet to be assigned.
I have the OS 1.6 that I took out of the Giles and put into the Avemco Extra, I can say clearly I have never had a problem with the ST 1.4 (2300) and I can honestly say that there is no diffrence in power, I actually like the ST much better.
They all have the stock carbs on them and 15% cool power fuel.
I start mine by putting finger over the carb, pul it through 7 times take the throttle to idle and spin the motor via the spinner back wards and they start and run every time.
One note though they run best on the OS F plug.
Good luck,
Larry

RE: Feedback on SuperTigre G-2300 Dual BB Ringed
I have always ran OS engines both 2 and 4 strokes. I have a few club members run the smaller SuperTigres and never saw anyone have problems with them. I just had to question the bigger boys, specifically the 2300 because this is my first big bird project and reliability is very important to this project, hate deadstick landings . Thanks for everyone's response, what great group!!!

The 2300 is stump puller, but it likes fuel. I have one and will be getting another. My first one is just over two years old. I also have a ST 90 that I just love.

The 2300 they are putting out now is a great buy. Mine have run great. I heard the stories, but at that price I tried one. I'm sold. The only down side to them is the weight. They are selling gas engines that are lighter!

I've got two with stock carbs and Bisson pitts mufflers. They both turn 17X8 APC props and burn 15% NITRO. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one if I could get it past the wife!
In fact, you had better before the rest of the RC world finds out what a great bargain they are!

Good idea John! I'll have to remember that!
I just got an order today from Tower. I opened the box and the first thing the wife went for was the invoice. It was basically my Christmas present (little late but still an okay present) so there wasn't any issue. But, when she starts asking, "which one is THAT for?" I might be into a little bit of trouble.
In any event, I seriously think you can't go bad having a few SuperTigres around, no matter what size they are.
