KMP Pilatus PC-21 Build
The PC-21 arrived today and I thought it would be a good idea to start a build thread. I opened the package and went through all the parts and everything seems to be in order. The detail and quality looks good and I’m eager to start the build.
Right now my plan is to go with a 2-stroke gas engine and I am leaning toward the Evolution 40gx. It looks like a pretty clean fit in the cowl and should be more than enough power.
Here is a quick picture to get things started.
Cheers!

Eric, great thread, Im happy for you. Picture make the plane look good at first sight.
I will follow your build.
Question; is the hole in the fuselage tail for the stab. tube ? Are the stabs plug-in type ?
If yes, it would greatly facilitate the transport.

Hi Erick
I read that you mention the Evolution 40, Andrew said that the Saito 180 would fit perfectly in the cowl, seeing the difference betwen the E40 and the S180, they are similar in size, my concern is the weigth (600 g of difference), and the muffler, the pitts style needs alot of space, maybe a bisson inverted style, if it fits inside the cowl I think I'll go with the Evolution 40 too.

Here are a few more pictures of the fuselage showing the servo mounts in the main body and the tail for rudder and elevator. I will probably modify to accomodate dual servos for the elevators.

For those of you wanting a bit more info on firewall / cowl size, here are some pics. Note that the cowl tapers from about 6.75" down to 4".

RE: KMP Pilatus PC-21 Build
Before I get to far along, I want to set everyone’s expectations that I am not a super experienced builder and i greatly appreciate all your feedback and suggestions. Don't want anyone to get the impression I know all the answers [8D]
Yes the wheels come with the retracts and they look great. I like to coat all of my aluminum parts, including wheels, with a product called SharkHyde. It provides a clear layer of protection from oxidation and last many years on a model. I use the stuff on my Large aluminum boat and it protects even after two or more years of use in the ocean.
My radio and power set-up is probably overkill, but I already have the components.
Servos:
HS-5645 for Flaps, ailerons, and nose wheel steering.
JR DS8611 for the rudder
HS-5945 for the elevators (I plan to install one for each elevator)
HS-85MG for throttle and retract valve.
Receiver:
JR R922
Power:
3 - 2600mah Li Ion 2 cell packs. 2 for receiver and servos, 1 for ignition.
1 - MPI MKII regulated switch
1 - MPI MKIII 6V regulator for ignition
I'm also thinking about smoke, but want to wait until I finish the build and asses the weight and balance. I tend to add extra weight along the way due to extra reinforcement and modifications. Another reason i went with the larger engine, knowing I tend to build "bricks"
Cheers!

RE: KMP Pilatus PC-21 Build
two elevader servos, the elevader serface do seem larger than norm. I think I'll go with the 180 saito, im only worried
about inverted eng- and having trobble starting do to fuel pooling at the glow plug. had that problem all summer with another plane........[&o] and the fact the 180 soounds like a lawnmower

RE: KMP Pilatus PC-21 Build
Beautifull Model !!!! I have been waiting for this day. I first got this model at a smaller scale 0.90 + from VMAR.
After getting over all the poor quality issues and a lot of work to the model I have to admit is one of my favorite models to fly ... It flys like is on rails..
These are Great News KMP !!!!! I have been waiting for these model at a larger size and at the right scale from the real thing..
I have only a cocern on the Engine since I have to agree with Seanregan 1.80 FS will not sound so right on this model. any other
choices that could be used here ??? Considering the right fit on the cowl, power and sound for this awsome model...???

RE: KMP Pilatus PC-21 Build
180 sounds different on a 3d aircraft with a tuned pipe , but i dont see where i could fit a long pipe in the fuze.
on the fence with the rcgf45 - they seem too good to be true - goto www.zrcgf.com the 45cc will fit in the cowl
but I dont like the muffler it comes with, the power to wieght is perfict ( 25bls of thust / 4.3hp.) @ 48.9 oz "knoice"!!!
also look at KMP's nice Insterment panels for the cockpits. if you look at the full scale
cockpit is way diferent.

Hi guys
Its here, beautiful model, quality is really good, all parts came ok except the rear instrument panel , it came broken, maybe some glue and fiber could fix that, I'll post pictures of the damage tomorrow.

RE: KMP Pilatus PC-21 Build
Hi I am watching this thread with some interest and was interested in getting your thoughts on these types of engines, first the OS 200- 32cc which is proven as I have one already in a H-9 TaylorCraft and now in a CG Extra , SAITO FA-300 TWIN, and the SAITO FG-220G. My thoughts are with the Saito fg-220g as it would be a easy fit and 36cc, now some of you guy's have mentioned that the sound of the engine needs to be realalistic, it should be ok i guess. So let me now what you guy's think as i am very interested in either Santa or my wife getting me of these nice birds.

RE: KMP Pilatus PC-21 Build
I considered the Saito FG36 (220) but it would require cutting the firewall as it is 173MM in length. I will be mounting the Evolution 40 this weekend and will upload a few pics.

I agree that the cockpit and instrument pannel need to be changed a bit. I plan to make a few mods and use the attached picture from Pilatus to create new decals.

RE: KMP Pilatus PC-21 Build
I just noticed this kit and it is beautiful. I will be keeping an eye on this thread to see how it goes. I wonder if anyone makes an after market cockpit for this model. I know there is a company that makes cockpits and one for the KMP Skyraider but the name escapes me at the moment. This might be one kit I am going to have to get.

RE: KMP Pilatus PC-21 Build
Seeing the real difference in weight betwen the Saito 180 and the Evolution 40, I think I'll leave the Evolution idea, with the ignition, batteries and muffler is almost 1 kg of difference, so my eyes are now on the Moki 1.80, a little more heavy than saito but a lot less than Evolution, it can run with 0% of nitro and have a lot of power, an if it sounds like [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbp957GobZQ]this[/link] on my Pilatus, I want one.
