96td, Nothing wrong with those photos!
I can see the difference between your engine and mine is that the prop hub on the MLD is longer than on the RCGF.
The crankcase of the RCGF seems to hit the top of the cowl when I try to squeeze it in there.
I guess mine will be down with an OS120AX then

Hi 96TD ....We are having a scale/glider tow day next Sunday 17th at Strathalbyn club , bring your Decath down , I will have mine there , dont know if I will have it flyable , still have to sort out the exaust for the Saito .....wil try to get it done
The field is just out of town on the Langhorn creek rd
Ian
You didnt show .......

I flew mine and I love it , the Saito 20cc petrol engine is a jewel , starts first pop and idles great and is the right power for this plane , I flew it again yesterday and forgot to locktite the axle nuts........... one spat fell off , and as I was lining up to land the right wheel fell off.... managed to land on ONE wheel and it tiped up at the end ...no damage....and another guy found the spat...lucky....NO one would have spares here................

Well, good! Maybe this thread did some good! Like Isaid earlier, I asked a rep at the Toledo Show and he didn't know. I'm excited, as now there's a good choice for a Decathlon now!

Ian, thanks for the tip re the tailwheel.
I use locktite on all bolts when Ibuild gas planes. The vibration seems to have a way of rattling everything loose if it isn't done properly

Hi Ian,

Any pictures for Saito FG20 installed?
I have a FG20 on the bench, seems this SD is a good choice ...
Do you installed inverted?

Well bad news , flying it yesterday and it went off tune a bit , so landed and noticed the needle valve extension shaking more than usual....any way whats happened is that because I used the NYLON engine mount that came with the kit , the mount for the carby and inlet pipe has broken from the vibes....a piece has broken out of the backplate.....very THIN AND WEAK with all that pumper gas carby hanging out there...
My advise is to use ONLY A METAL ENGINE MOUNT , the heavier the better , I will be taking it to the importers and claiming under warrenty

The LHS got one in this morning, I'm gonna take a peek and see if it comes home with me.I wonder if my wife will buy the story of it following me home. "It's so cute, can I keep it!" LOL

I just got to sell a few things here on RCU and use some of my overtime pay and I'll have one! I really like the size, not to small, not to big!

I am interested to hear flying reports from this one. I love decathlons and owned two other of the older seagull Decathlons. I have since been flying larger planes (only have a carden cap now) but this one looks great. Saw it at the LHS and was temped. Good to hear gas engines and this plane balance out alright.

Ok heres my flying report. the first flight went well the second flight went well, tried some stalls.seemed to be ok. did some stall turns and loops and rolls that was ok ran out of gas. On the third flight I was trying out the slow flight charachteristics.was going along fine when out of nowhere it tip stalled and spun in. I was quite suprised as I had not encountered a tip stall when checking out the stall at altitude. I was pretty pleased with the kit for the most part. The struts are ugly and did not fit right (jury struts were too long). but as with all cheap kits the fun only lasts a very short time. Too bad it was a pretty good looking plane I would have built new struts had it lasted more than one day. I have some good parts left if anyone is interested. The cowl was not even mounted yet.

Well After much thought and replay in my head and talking to the guy's at the field, I have come to the conclusion that the crash was pilot error. I just had it too slow.I cant help feeling that bent pushrod had something to do with it. It did turn in that way when it stalled. With that behind me,I have decided to order a new fuse and rebuild it.The wing is already repaired.Heavier pushrods will be installed, and new nicer looking lightweight aluminum struts will be added. I'll post picks when the time comes to build the new struts. When I replay the first two flights in my head I cant help but thinking that it did fly pretty good.

I was thinking of putting a BME 44 in one.

I think a BME 44 would be way to much engine for a plane of this size and not sure the airframe would hold up, with out some major reinforcement of the firewall. Remember that this plane is just a "development of the Aeronca Champ" with a symmetrical wing that has been Clipped.

I overpower everything so I am sure it would be fine. It certainly has the wing area to handle larger engines. The BME 44 and super light.

FWIW I think its about the same weight as some of the 26cc engines people have in this plane.

Momoore67 has a good point about overpowering these Cub variants. Decathlons fly on the wing, using rudder to steer and the ailerons to control banking. There is no magic involved. Too much engine is only going to make it seem a little tail heavy, as the added power really doesn't give much of an advantage with that huge surfboard wing.
