Bonedaddy41, I have a 60 Waco and ran into the same problems you did and I wish I had discovered this web site before I flew my Waco. The problem with the cabane struts still haunts me as I still have to much down elev as a final trim even though I have added all that weight. I am using a Saito 100 and have added 5oz th the nose. Do you still have a lot of down trim?
I am having to reinforce the landing gear as well. Your thoughts please.
Do you have the CG set toward the rear of the recommendations? They recommend 5" to 5 3/4". I have mine set right at 5" ... and I don't think the plane would gripe about 4 3/4". I still have a few clicks down trim in mine ... not a lot though. I decided it was close enough ... as this plane uses fuel the trim changes drastically so my trim changes every few minutes in flight anyway. If I have to replace this plane, I will do a little bit of re-designing on the next one ... one thing will be putting the fuel tank closer to CG ... but this thing is worth it

Bull-RCU,
I did have my cabanes backwards wow what a ride that was! Now that I have reversed them I still have about 1.5 degrees of positive in the upper wing@*#&!! [>:] Thats why I have so much down still in the trim. I have the balance point at 4 3/4!QUOT! and it still tries to go vertical upon take off with a lot of throttle. I haven't gotten to a smooth landing yet as I have had problems with a Perry pump I tired to use. The Saito 100 didn't need a pump so I tool it off and then did'nt tune it properly and had a dead stick and then ripped off the gear for the second time. I will be beefing the belly up now.

Bonedaddy41:

I have mine awaiting it's turn to the bench. You mentioned you added 12oz. plus a heavy hub to get to the 5" balnce point. What was the weight of the heavy hub? Tower says the 91FX with a muffler weighs 24.3oz. plus the 12 you added equals 36.3oz., plus the hub. I have a way cool way to add weight that's useful. I have a deal working on a bench run 7 cyl Technopower A series radial engine. 6 inches in diameter and it weighs 31oz. by itself. I'll have to make an exhaust collector or ring of some sort to merge the stubby exhaust stacks together, that'll weigh a couple of ounces and the glow driver leads will add to it a little too. I'll have to move the tank back so I'll put it on the CG as you plan on doing. It ought'ta be cool!

Thanks for all the ground work on this bird. I'll pre-repair all the items mentioned from all of you.

THANKS!

Oh that's gotta sound sweet!!!!! I think my hub is a 2 oz ... and I am running a slimline pitts which is a tad lighter than than the stock 91FX muffler You definately have to get a lot of pictures if you end up putting that radial on ... kinda makes my fake radial look shabby [sm=disappointed.gif]

I'll post some picks soon. The deal isn't a done deal just yet but, I think it;ll go through. I'll know this weekend. My original engine choice was gonna be a Saito FA-100T http://horizon.hobbyshopnow.com/prod...?prod=SAIE100T which wieghs about 29oz. I'm kinda worried about cooling. I know the air inlet is unrestricted, but, I'm worried about getting air out of the cowl without hacking it up. Any thoughts?

I was wondering... When I assembled the lower wing I epoxied them together I used a small c clamp to hold the front togethrer. I then taped the rear as shown. I allways try to get a tight seamless fit. When I tried to fit the wing to the fuse it had too much dihedral. I needed to cut @ 1/8" from the bottom of the lower wing forward locking tab. Now I'm concerned that I may have problems with the legnth of the cabine struts due to the possible excessive dihedral on the bottom wing. Perhaps the mfg should have given the standard instructions that they give in kits ( one panel flat, 3/4" under the oppisite wing tip)

Did anyone have this problem? Does ther cabine struts still fit?
I dont think the dihedral should have a negative effect on it's flight characteristics.

Well, another great day out with my WACO 60... UPSTATE Ny and 60 degrees in Nov. 23... 6 flights today... Got gusty near the end with 25 - 30 mile gusts... No problem for flying just landing was getting tricky because it was across the runway at a 45 deg. angle... Grass is real tall with very wet conditions... and with the small wheels and wheel pants didn't want long take offs and landings... This plane if fast becoming my fav. plane... I'm building a 71" wing GEE BEE... and a JU STUKA for the spring... When I'm flying this plane people just stop and watch... It's just so pretty doing tail slides, slow rolls... I'm really glad I took the chance on this Bird!!!

I fly off grass as well and the first thing I did was replace the small wheels with 3.5" wheels. The only problem is I don't have the neat looking wheel pants. I also replaced the small cabine hardware with ball joint bolts with lock nuts. I lost to many from vibration. This is a great flying plane.

Default Lighter Sportsman .60 Waco ARF

It looks like most WACO 60 users had to add weight in the noze to get proper CG.

- Is it possible to "re-make"the tail to make it lighter ? Is the original tail made of a plain balsa board or is it already made of a light balsa structure ?

- Also, I intend to use a Technopower 7 cylinder in it. I will therefore remove the COWL (one more reason to make the tail lighter !) to have better cooling and to make the wonderfull engine...more visible
--> Could someone tell me the weight and diameter of the original Fiberglass Cowl.

I just ordered one about 5 minutes ago and plan to put a MDS 68 on it. Can anyone tell me if this will be enough power. Where can you buy this plane for 169 dollars. I paid 229.00 for mine. Did I get ripped off?

Damifino, here's a few pics of the cowl almost complete. Spent a little time on it but Punxsutawney Phil says there's six more weeks of winter so I'm not in a real hurry!!!

Mettler, Your radial engine looks great! Is it the one that came with the kit? Is your engine mounted? Noticed you have no hole for the head.....good to hear from you.

Damifino, here's a couple of better shots that shows the engine a lot better. Valve cover sticks out a little and the muffler exits out the bottom of the cowl. I added come extra cowl mounting blocks to support the cowl a little better.
The dummy engine is a Top Flite 1/8 scale from their P-47 kit. You can order it separately from Tower.

Looks good! Thanks for sharing. Do you have experience with the semi-inverted angle of the engine and its low speed reliability? I'm new to 4 strokes so fill me in....thanks.

I run my 4 stroke saito 100 at a angle and have no problems... if you run them upsidedown you have to be carful not to flood them. Other then that all of mine are run inverted or at an angle.
