RE: Great Planes Extra 300 GP/EP
Hey out there!!!! Just want to let everyone know that the maiden was UN-succesful due to that unknown-to-me anomily known as FLUTTER.. This is how it went... Taxi and rollout went perfect. Turn one and turn two were used to gain alt., and down wind leg was used to trim 2 clicks down elevator and 3 clicks right elevator for straight and level flight at 2/3 throttle. Starting turn three, to the left, and heard audible FLUTTER. Pulled back throttle to 1/3 and tried to level out, but to no avail.... in she went !@#$%^&*(... Lets just say a long walk to retrieve the wreakage was made even longer trying to figure out why that happened? I have built plenty of ARF's in my hobby and am confident that It was no cause of mine in terms of build competance. Oh Well... we fly some and crash some, but I would have liked to have flown it a couple of times first !!!!!!

RE: Great Planes Extra 300 GP/EP
Sorry to here about your plane raden. I've heard that a few have had some problems with flutter in this thread. I wonder if they were all from the start or developed after a few flights. I maidened mine this past saturday and had no problems with flutter or anything else. I'm using all the stock hardware, hs-485 in the wings and a saito 82. I must say this plane is a rocket on take off, straight up and out of sight. I'm definately gonna be listening for flutter next time out but she seems to be pretty solid. I'll keep you guys informed if any issues come up.

I know for sure that all my control surface gaps are taped............. I´m sure it helps, not sure if its enough to be the "cure" for this plane.

I don't know what could have caused the flutter. I been flying my with a Saito .82 turning a 14X6 for about a year now. The only thing I don't do is high speed dives or flying. I always cut the throttle back when on a down line and don't let the plane build up alot of speed. These are big control surfaces on this plane and the linkages must be tight and strong.

There were no high speed/ heavy G dives or turns involved in it's maiden flight. I always fly my planes at least 3 to 4 times moderately before I put the wringer to 'em. This happened on a rather medium speed and shallow banking turn. A full minute and a half of fly time!!!!

I don't mean to ask alot of questions but it would be good to figure out what caused the flutter. Was it aileron or elevator.? You stated you cut power and try to level it out. It must have been aileron flutter if you could not correct the bank. Post crash inspection, was the aileron control horns still attached or tore loose in the crash. What about the elevator control horns?

RE: Great Planes Extra 300 GP/EP
I've had my extra since March. I have a Saito 82 with 14x6 prop. Hitec 5485HB servos. I have had major flutter problems with the right wing since the first flight. I have put Du-Bro heavy duty servo arms on the servos, sealed the surface on the ailerons. There is no slop in the linkages, and I still gat a VERY bad flutter when flying at half throttle. It is so bad that I'm surprised the plane is still together. One time the flutter stripped the gears in the futaba 3004 servos I had in it at first, so I went to the HS5485. Another time it pulled the servo mount loose that was attached with epoxy. The next time it pulled the linkage apart. The only thing I can see is the aileron is shorter than the trailing edge. I have written tower hobbies support and their response, the wing may by broken. The wing is not broken and this has happened from day one. I have been building and flying for almost 20 years and have never experienced this. Anyone have any other suggestions?
This was a post from a while back about flutter.

There's a couple pics of mine...just finished yesterday, and I just applied the stickers today...in fact they are still wet (Windex method)! Mine has an OS 70 Surpass II swinging an APC 14x4 prop. Futaba 7ch FASST w/3152 servos all around except a small Tower 110 (?) servo on the throttle. Rudder servo is in the tail position, which I worried about at first...my plane seemed like it would be tail heavy and I would have to move the servo to the forward location. Luckily the fat prop, spinner, cowl, and wheel pants tipped the balance, so I think I am on the recommended starting CG.
Like the Shoestring that I made last month, this ARF just fell together real fast too. Took about a week to make it, which is SUPER fast for me. With good weather, I might get to maiden this weekend. Jon

RE: Great Planes Extra 300 GP/EP
Ok time for me to move all the throws to "3d".
At the moment, with the servos at their full throws i´m at the manuals "high rate" levels.
How are people connecting the pushrods to the servos and control surfaces to obtain the 3d throws?
I just say this after the suplimentarty page added to the kit, saying moving thigns to get more throw is dangerous, I have it as the page recomends but i´m not reaching 3d throws...
comments/pics?

RE: Great Planes Extra 300 GP/EP
I just ordered mine and I'll be using a Magnum 91 4 stk [X(]
I'm thinking about use Dubro Heavy Duty Dual Control Horn System .40-.91 (LXEMF5)
Anybody using a engine that big to give me some advice?
Thanks

IMHO I think you'll overkill with the horns
IMHO I think you'll overkill with the horns
GP Extra 300 SP
Dubro S12 Square Fuel Tank 12 oz
Hitec HS-5625MG servos all over (didn't decide one for the throttle)
Magnum 91 4 stroke (this engine has the same weight of a OS 81 4 stk and 2000 rpm over)
The Magnet Source Super Magnets .7" (3) to fix the canopy problem
Futaba R617FS 2.4 ghz receiver
Need to decide about power supply (2s lipo using a voltage regulator or a Hobbico HydriMax 5C 6V 2000mAh NiMH AA)
I don't know about the horns yet
Probably Hitec Standard Metal Horn 3/4" Single Sided or Hitec Heavy Duty Servo Arms
Didn't decide about switches yet
So, let me know what you think guys
Thanks

I think the trick really is proper instalation of the magnets.
In mine, originally they recessed into their holes too much... you need to test fit and fill the "extra recess" of the holes and make sure the magnets actually make contact.
I fly mine doing MANY snap rolls, tumbles etc...

I think you are going to come in at +7lb and possibly rip a control surface off using the 5625. I use those on 25%.
A small piece of foam in between the canopy and the firewall also helps secure the hatch. Just be sure either way when you take off that the canopy is pulled back!!!

[8D]Thank you for all your comments guys. I'll be careful on the canopy installation.
I think the weight is not going to be that bad. The magnum weight the same as an O.S. 81 recommended for this plane... now about ripping of a surface, do you think it's a good idea to use a different hinge type?
Thanks

RE: Great Planes Extra 300 GP/EP
Looks like a good airplane, wonder if it has any tendency to tip stall on slow landings? another question I have a 66 inch wing apan vectorflight 300 extra ,I don't guess and dare to hope that the cowl from this plane would fit my vectorflight.
