I sort of look around on the marketplace and see what that type engine is bringing and go from there

I have the hangar 9 40 Cub with a .91 Magnum four stroke, and couldn't be happier. The plane flies great and I think we all know that you don't have to fly wide open throttle. I agree with one of the comments about work on setting a good idle....this plane will float all the way down the runway with anything more! Also, don't put a two stroke on a Cub....it's just not right! With the 4 stroke, it looks and sounds like a real plane up in the air. Enjoy it!

The bottom line is that if you have a new Magnum 91 four stroke, you are going to need to break it in well on the bench before installing in the plane so you can have the needles set and the engine stable enough to get a reliable low idle before flying the plane

I have a Saito 72 in mine and I fly it at a little less than 1/2 throttle . Loops, hammerheads and the like are momentatry full throttle. I love the way it burbbles (is that a real word?) as it flies by nice and slow...

Can anyone who has a four-stroke in their Hangar 9 cub tell me how they mounted it? I just picked up one and have a Saito .72 that I planned to install. However the engine mount blind nuts are pre-installed and are set up have the engine head at about 135 deg instead of 180. This will stick the head of the engine out the lower right side of the cowl. Did you folks re-drill the firewall to put the engine inverted of just live with the head sticking out the side?

Thanks, Rick

Personally I had the old style H9 Cub and it had beam mounts on the side.

I've seen one new style PnP Cub that was converted to a Saito 56 from the Evolution engine and he mounted the engine Horizontal.

It's no big deal to knock out the old blind nuts, fill the holes, and reposition the blind nuts

Personally if the cowl is already cut for a Evolution at 45 degrees to get the muffler out the bottom, I would have to study it some to decide. But keep in mind the ease of cooling the engine as well as the muffler.

On my late model H9 .40 size cub, I installed the Saito GK .56. It bolted right in place, using the standard engine mount configuration.

I believe this is a near perfect plane and engine combination.

I agree with the larger lower pitch props making the plane easier to manage. Started with an 11x8 wood and went to a 12x6 wood.

This plane is nothing but fun.

I Have this same combo. The GK 56 was the recommended engine in the ad. Flies scale and tought me that rudder was for more than ground handling. A blast to fly with a little wind.

Cubs and the rudder are synonymous. They go hand in hand. It will not turn worth a toot without the rudder and ailerons

The 62 weighs less than a 50 and only slightly more than a 56. The 62 runs a 13-6. Idles well

Hello 5blue,

I know that it's been over 2 years since you put up this post, but I have a question about your engine mounting.

I see that you have a Saito 60 or 62 mounted inverted... I'm trying to do the same thing with a Saito 82 (will probably need the extra power for float flying). Did you find it a lot of work to reposition the motor mount for inverted installation?

If you had the chance, would you do anything different for your engine mount?

Thanks for any advice you can provide...

Bob
