That's a strange design. There's hardly any of the prop extending beyond the edge of the cowl. [X(]

I would not mind getting one of those. The Wedell-Williams Model 44 Gilmore Red Lion (flown by Roscoe Turner) was a heck of a plane. Just a little history about the plane:

"Gilmore - Red Lion"

Gilmore Oil Company provided (Turner) him with a lion cub named "Gilmore" for publicity; complete with a cub-sized parachute, Turner would frequently take "Gilmore" on tour with him. Before long, Roscoe became known to millions as the man who flew with a lion, and crowds flocked to see the intrepid pair. The pair set an East-West record and make a record flight between Canada and Mexico. They also entered the 1930 Derby Race from Los Angeles to Chicago. But Wiley Post won and Roscoe and Gilmore finished fifth. It would prove to be Gilmore's last race, for after 25,000 miles of flying he became more payload than Turner could afford to carry. Turner retired Gilmore from flying.

In 1932, Roscoe Turner, with the financial backing of the Gilmore Oil Company, commissioned the Wedell Williams Air Service Corporation to construct a racing airplane. The airplane was to be the third in a series of almost identical ships known as the Wedell Williams Model 44s. The first version of Turner's Wedell broke apart in mid-air during a test flight, but the airplane's designer and test pilot, Jimmy Wedell, was able to bail out. The second version was strengthened and delivered to Turner during the summer of 1932.

Sporting a colourful red and cream paint scheme, Turner flew his Wedell to third place in both the 1932 Bendix and Thompson trophy races. In 1933, Turner purchased the airplane from the Gilmore Oil Company and replaced its 550 hp Pratt & Whitney Wasp Jr. engine with a more powerful 800 hp Pratt & Whitney Wasp Sr. The new engine won him the Bendix trophy in 1933, but he was disqualified from winning the Thompson Trophy Race because he flew inside one of the race pylons. Still not satisfied with the power of his Wedell, Turner once again upgraded his engine to a 1000 hp Pratt & Whitney Hornet and went on to win the 1934 Thompson Trophy Race.

I'll bet the model would be a good flying, fast plane.

Interesting. If they make it available in the US, I'd buy one.

Its a nice place ... flies really smooth. Quality is average, nothing much to shout about but neither much to complain too. Handles well. Not all that fast but I tell you this, she is a floater! I enjoyed flying my pal's, just at half throttle and feel it carve through the air. She looks great.

Wow, this is a great looking model, and it's one of my all time aviation favorites! I can only imagine how beautiful that fuselage looks with all the stingers underneath the covering...

For you fellow affectionados of 'Golden-Era' racing aircraft, Air-racing-history.com is an excellent site which provides detailed information, including photos and images, on almost all the historical to current individual aircraft and the people who built and flew them races.

Below is the link to their page on the Wendel-Williams No. 44 Red Lyon... check it out!
[link=http://www.air-racing-history.com/aircraft/Wedell%20Williams%20No.44.htm]Wendell Williams No.44 air racer[/link]

My search has shown that this model is only sold in Europe... I want one bad...! Where I can purchase this Black Horse Models in the US..?

A bit of information you surely will be interested in.

Black Horse will offer the Gilmore Red Lion in two sizes:

1.- 57.87" span for a .46 2-stroke/.56 4-stroke engine.
2.- 85" span for a 45-50cc gas engine.

Both were showed on the UK RIPMAX booth at the past Nuremberg Toy Fair. Hope you like the photos a workmate took in person there.

Best Regards,

I have a great picture of that aircraft sitting on the beach in front of the famous Hotel del Coronado. The plane is fantastic, it is the Lockheed Air Express.

Be a litte patient my friends. As fas as I know they are not available yet but they will be very soon.

I rather prefer waiting for their new big DH Chipmunk, also intendeed for a 45c.c. gas engine, more or less the same size than the large Gilmore.

I have stumbled across this plane.
I immediately started looking to buy it.
It is still not available in the USA?

By Jove the 50cc version looks like it's kicking some ass, too:

I have a set of the Roscoe Turner Flying Corps wings. These are kiddy wings you mailed off for with the box top off Heinz Rice Flakes.

When you belonged to the Roscoe Turner Flying Corp, there was a secret password when greeting another member. You would say "Eleven-thirty" , for the 11 hours and 30 minutes it took Turner to fly east to west cross country. Then the correct response was, "ten-four" for the ten hours and four minutes it took him to fly cross country west to east.

And that is where " 10-4" comes from.True story.

I am thinking of purchasing one of these Wenddell Williams Racer classics, the Gilmore 85'' version, to go with my Miles Sparrow hawk.

Could you tell me if the wings are plug in, or in one piece?
Also is there any rigging wire as on the full size?
I was thinking of fitting an MT57 Petrol. What are your thoughts

Regards,

Ian
