RE:
Dear Matt Andren,
I'm wondering whether the Toledo Special would, with its dihedral, moderate airfoil and quite conservative and traditional configuration, be a good choice as a first aileron plane?
Of course its not a trainer per se. I have learned on an Multiplex EasyStar, with a little extra instruction on a 40 size Sig Kadet, and have quite a bit of simulator time. I'm also a private pilot. I'd rather take the next step to the Toledo Special than to a bland 40 or 60 size trainer.
What do you think, could it be a reasonable 2nd plane after the EasyStar?

If you can work with an experienced pilot for a few flights, it looks like it might work for you. You could try it, and if it seems like it's too much, get an inexpensive "bland trainer" such as (sorted by price):
Tower Trainer http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXCAS2&P=0 $64.99
Solo Star http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...ProdID=HAN2055 $79.99
Wingman I http://ecsvr.com/wgm/ShopDisplayproducts.asp?Search=Yes $79.99
Sky Raider Mach I http://ecsvr.com/abm/shopexd.asp?id=1955 $89.99

Of course they do. H9 is HH. Same goes for most of the stuff they sell. They got their hands in a lot of this hobby. All good. Feel better letting a 3rd party get some of it instead of HH getting it all from me.

RE: RE:
Got mine together but it was to windy to fly. The only problem that i ran into was that it calls for 4 1/2" from the firewall to front of motor and that was to short to clear the cowl. Should go about 4 3/4" but i will have to get a new mount and see.

RE: RE:
skippy; a couple of questions if you don't mind, what size wheels does it have? and what engine are you using and how is it mounted? I fly off grass so I'm wondering if it needs bigger wheels and if the wheel pants will hold up, then I have a nib magnum 52fs that needs a home

RE: RE:
The wheels are the stock 2 3/4" i have a os 46ax in it and it flies this plane with plenty to spare but the 52 should do well. The engine is mounted slightly down from a 90 degree. I flew it this morning in some wind and it handled it very well. Our club has a paved runway but i did taxi it in the grass and landed in the grass once and it did fine. The wheel pants are pretty strong so i don't think you would have any problems with them. I will post some pictures later that i took yesterday.

RE: RE:
Matt Andren,
I am considering using an OS 90 FS which is similar in power to the Saito 82 and a 46 two stroke. If the distance from the firewall to the front of the cowl is in fact 4 3/4" then it should fit. I realize the OS engine weighs a little more but this plane has a lot of wing area. I belive the video of the Toledo Special flying is with the Saito 82 installed - am I correct. Thank you for the help.

RE: RE:
Howard,
The plane should be fine with the .90. It will have a ton of power as the Saito .82 gives the plane fantastic performance. This plane needs less power than you think however, it is a clean airframe, even with a regular .46 2-stroke it has good vertical performance.
Yes the video is with the Saito .82.

Guys,
Glad you like the Toledo Special.
I designed the plane so I can answer any questions you might have on it. Here are some features of the plane.
2-stroke, 4-stroke or electric option right out of the box
bottom hatch for EP battery access.
2-peice wing
Bolt on tail
Control surfaces pre-hinged
Control horns installed
Clear cowl for ease of 2 and 4-stroke installation and cutting of fiberglass cowl.
Semi-symetrical airfoil (same as Pulse 40XT)
The plane flies extremely well and has classic looks with modern day performance. Great touch and go machine. It slips great and is alot of fun to practice slips with. Rudder is very powerfull and has no issues with knife edge, snaps, spins, and many other aerobatic manuvers, or throttle back a bit and just cruise it around.
The most difficult (or time consuming) part of the build is installing the windows. I built one in a singe evening after work.
We will have one at SEFF next week if anyone is going.
Hope that helps.
Matt

RE: RE:
hello mat andren........i just purchased a toledo special......i plan to use a saito 82...in the article in model airplane news, the builder stated the motor mount would not spread apart enough to accept the saito 72.....this caused the motor to be off center......i belived the 72 and the 82 share the same engine case....any recomendations to fix this problem?.......also in this thread someone said the recomended distance from the firewall to the tip of the cowl is off......what is the proper distance????....thank you....pault

I am having the same exact problem as Pault. Using the recomended Satio 72. The distance off the firewall must near 4 3/4 and not 4 1/2 as the manual states. The engine mounts that come with the plane are bent. Horizon Hobby shipped me another pair and they are bent also. I am prob. going to order the Saito mount for the 72 (RR) and make more holes in the firewall. Not that I want to. The distance that the Satio mount brings the engine flywheel out to is 120 mm or 4.724". This should clear the cowl face.

I've got a Saito .82 in mine, and no problems with mount, I don't have the cowl on yet, ran out of time before I had to come back Iraq, but by measuring it, doesn't seem like it's gonna be a problem.

RE:
I just looked in the instructions and noticed that Hangar 9 is using a Satio 82 with an old style engine. I have to look into if the specs. are different from the old to new style case. I beleive that the Satio 72 and 82 share the same case but i will have to verify that as well.
If anyone has any info, please chime in. Thanks
Mike
