You have to enter the super saver coupon code to get the $50 off. The code changes every month. Since it isn't in stock yet you can't see the discount. It doesn't show up until you are checking out.

Ortho - Thanks, but it's really not that difficult. From this thread it sounds like wjcalhoun is doing the most advanced maneuvers with this plane.

btw - I thing I have learned is that, when you're doing a low, slow inverted pass, be sure to throttle-up before banking into a turn. Lost a Rev 59 that way once!

this is the Garmin picture. also, here is before and after. have any of you ever seen this happen before? i am being sarcastic. many times on this post, the complaint with this bird is the landing gear.

oh, ok. did you order it yet? i have a da 60 on a rc guys super decathlon, which has been torn up by the thrust (wing covering, struts, etc...) thinking of taking the engine out and putting it in the revolver giant. the sup decathlon still flies and functions, but it has patches, and some of the white stripes have been blown off.

i am scared to do that at this time. i had a real neat plane, h9 sundowner with a .40. this bird was a beast. must have flown her over 20 times. last flight, i did just that, low pass, high speed, inverted, and i mad mistake of putting up elevator, and that baby came to earth perpendicular full speed, i 've never seen anything like it. i can still see it now. complete polverization. it was like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7eI4vvlupY

Nope, I have ordered one. I'm not 100% sure I want one. The price is definitely really good for a 55cc class bird. I paid around $430 for my 73" 30cc plane. I'm starting to do a fair amount of 3D flying and I don't think a R90 will be a good 3D plane.

On Youtube there's video of a guy flying an electric Rev 59 up to 160 mph. On a different video, Airraptor flys a Nitro-powered (OS 120 2s, I think) Rev 59 extremely fast- must be around 150. And he flies LOW to the ground, too.

I saw that video and was amazed. Reminded me of some of our jet guys flying. Totally wild. You gotta be sharp on the sticks at high speeds as one small move can make a big difference downline

On my fastest days of flying anything I have it is never really all that close to a 100 MPH. Probably more around 60-80ish on my high speed passes with my smaller Rev or a couple of my fastest gassers. I have never clocked anything, but I have watched some 100 MPH jets and I know I am not getting those speeds out of anything I have.

When you think about it 160 on an RC plane is sick! I saw those 250+ MPH gliders on youtube and that was totally over the top! I would not even stand there with the radar gun.

My R70/DLE20 with a 12 pitch prop turning 8700 on the ground has a theoretical prop speed of about 95. My guess is that in a dive, with unloading, i have broken 100. I know that she is really quick on a low pass! Ortho has one of the fastest documented speeds for an R70 that i have seen with his 120 by GPS.

I am buying an eagle tree system and will build an instrument pod that can be swapped among my planes for airspeed, altimeter, and gps position, so in the near future, I'll also have objective data on the speed of the R70.

On the R90, I have all the parts details worked out, except for the engine. I'm just worried that the DLE55 or DLE55RA will be on the low side of my desired performance curve. The DLE60 twin performs equivalently to the DLE55RA. Mintor 75 is currently out of production, and the DA-85 seems to have trouble retaining a muffler. Have given some thought to a DLE111 but that engine weighs 6# (!). DA-60 might do.

Have any of you guys worked out how you might (will) outfit an R90?

wjc - I might have already said this, but I"m thinking of using my Precision Eagle 4.2, which is a 68cc. It's currently set up for nitro, though, so I'll have to convert it to gas. Need to decide on an EI and do some research to see the best BTDC angle.

Just checked TH again for the R90. They're recommending single 99oz servo for the ailersons, elevators, rudder. Seems very underspec for a plane this size. Though in line with their R70 recommendations.

Nothing very scientific to it, but I would go twin just to minimize the vibration. That's me though... -Al

Mike:
I am planning Hitec 7955tg servos for all surfaces. There is no way i would use a 100 oz servo on a 50cc-class plane. Asking for blowback.

I want to run the numbers on wing loading and cubic wing loading with each engine, but i have to say i agree with ahicks that the twin seems like a good solution, if the weight does not get too great.

ahicks - what engine are you planning to use?

As I mentioned earlier, this Giant Rev is a little bigger than my current preferences allow. I have a 1/4 scale Nosen Decathlon I haven't flown in years as well as a 1/3 scale Ace Pitts hanging from the ceiling that's new, never flown! Been thinking along the lines of a twin for a while now for either - to try and minimize vibration to the airframe. I have 2 - 30cc size planes I fly only on occasion/mostly collecting dust because I'm currently stuck in a 20cc rut? They're just so much easier to handle/transport for me - and seemingly just as fun once airborne. That's today though. Still very interested in what's going on with this new plane.

I don't know much about the DLE twin. I do have plenty of DLE 20 and 30cc experience, and having that, I would likely try the DLE 60 twin. The only thing I don't like about it is the fact the cylinders don't allow for an angled plug - making it pretty wide for it's displacement.

I would never go that low on that size airframe. I use at least 100 oz on my elevator servos on my EF 300 88" and that is just elevators. I would not even consider anything that small on any of the other surfaces. If someone was doing some lazy flying they would be fine, however can you imagine some spirited flying? At some point you would crunch a 100 oz servo on the ailerons if they have large surfaces.

I would go minimum 100 oz on elevators and around 130 - 200 oz on the rest and should be a decent setup.

If you have a LHS that carries the Great Planes line, go there. When I originally was going to order my 50cc Reactor at $400, the Tower Super Saver club deal sounded nice at $50 off, but they were gonna charge close to $100 shipping. Went to my LHS, and though I didn't get the Super Saver discount, they didn't charge me shipping, just the $400 regular price[8D]

Shipping on the bigger birds gets expensive in a hurry; just needed a replacement fuse for my 60" EF Extra, and EF charged $43 for shipping via USPS, which I thought sounded kinda high. When it came in at the post office to sign for, I had them give me the estimate for my price to send it right back: it was $70! Shipping bulky objects=ouch!

Just called TH about the Rev 90 - they told me there's an $85 shipping surcharge, along with the normal $9.99 (though the $9.99 is waived if you're in the Super Saver Club). So $429 - $50 (super saver) = $379 + $85 = $464. Went to my local hobby store today and asked them if they'd order it for me. They would - at the normal $429 price, plus tax = $467. So I might just give it to my LHS for goodwill, and cause it'd be easier for me to pick up the two large boxes at the LHS instead of UPS delivering them to my office, which might be a bit awkward.

Bummer the LHS couldn't waive more of that shipping fee for you...I mostly order off the net but do try to support the LHS as well. Ordered a big plane from Chief last fall, and it was free shipping to a business address, but $200 to residential. Reason being, it was truck freight and they require an inspection and signature by the receiver to avoid some of the damage claims. Worked out well, as I was able to look it over good, but as you say, hard to find room at the office for two 6' boxes full of Edge 540

Shipping has been going up significantly in the last year. EF wants around $150 for a 50cc plane, while 3dhobby wants around $200. $80 is a giveaway probably passing on a break from their own volume discount. The overall price for this plane is really unbelievable.

Have to believe the rear muffler DLE 55 would be a perfect match for this low drag plane. Some have said the wing span is significantly more than a standard 50cc plane, but only by around 2 to 3 inches. The fuselage length is not unusual either.

S&S = curious as to why you specified the DLE 55 Rear Exhaust. Is is so that you can use a tuned pipe? I'm guessing that's half the reason for the rear exhaust, other than fitting inside warbird cowls. (and I don't expect the Rev 90 cowl won't fit a side-carb DLE 55).
Also noticed that the "5.5hp" rating is at 7,500 rpm for the side-carb DLE 55, and 8,500 pm for the rear exhaust. Would that also be in line with the tuned pipe installation?

The stock muffler is around 4 oz. A pitts is around 9 or 10 ounces. A canister or pipe is even more. I like aerobatic planes and weight is always a consideration. Probably a bad habit. Have to wonder about the two cylinder 60, which I believe is around 10 oz. heaver than the 55.

Incidentally, there are cheaper options than the Hitec 7955. Some of the new Hitec servos are high torque, high voltage and two thirds the price. Seams like the 7955's are more pricey than this plane really needs.

If the fuse on the R90 is similar to my Reactor (and it does look fairly narrow), then the standard muffler on a side exhaust 50cc engine will likely require hacking the cowl. Not even close to fitting on the Reactor; a standard Jtec pitts also requires a small cutout at the forward bolt on the exhaust manifold. The Jtec pitts for a TF P51 (narrow cowl) fits great, but is about $30 more than the standard pitts....

The DLE55R with standard rear pitts would probably be ideal for the R90[8D]
