I have used mostly CA hinges but would like to learn about installing the round type pin hinges. Anyone have a tutorial? How do you line them up so they all bend properly as a unit when finished? Thanks.

I am nearing 50 years of building and flying.
Well, I don't think I ever built one 100% per the plan. Maybe back in antiquity, in the 60's, LOL.
The great thing about building toy planes is that one gets to express what he has learned over the years by building in whatever he feels is the simplest, lightest, best.
An all wood plane (as opposed to some composite, exotic types) is amazingly strong. Consider the fact that a few years ago I outfitted a DLE55 on pipe to an EF Extra 78" toy plane. It worked great with minimal vibes. Did the same thing to an all composite model last year and the phool thing shook itself apart, almost. I changed engines and all has been well since.

Re: Robart type hinges-
After oiling the hinge pin with 90wt gear oil, I glue one side in and deflect the uninstalled end fully to make sure it's going to operate in the right direction/move in a plane 90 degrees from the hinge line. To control hinge gap, hinge is inserted to the point where half of the hinge pin is on each side of the intended gap. So in other words, when sighting down the wing or flight surface, you should be able to see only 1/2 of the pin. Let that side dry, then install the second side.

After many years of using epoxy, and never mixing the right amount, I've switched to gorilla glue. Plenty of strength, always the right amount, and no concerns regarding set up time.

I too use a single life battery with ibec from tech-aero on my two gas planes. For safety, I believe the ibec is mandatory. Someone recently posted about a throttle system failure and had to fly at full throttle for a half an hour until the plane ran out of fuel. Had the plane had a problem with a control surface that made the plane uncontrollable it could have ended with disastrous results. A lot can go wrong with a fast gas plane flying at wot for 30 minutes. With the ibec they could have quickly ended the flight on their terms.
You know this is one reason they are good. Not only would it be bad to fly full throttle for 30 minutes, I would probably be so tired that I would crash before the plane would!

For drilling the holes, I highly recommend getting the guide from Robart. I think they are less than 10 bucks. Well worth it to make sure your holes are straight. That will keep the hinge from flexing if they are crooked. Then use the method Al described. If you dare, you can do both sides of the hinges at the same time like I do. After applying glue and inserting them in one side, I apply glue to the exposed side of the hinge, some in the holes they will be going into, then slide them together. I deflect it both directions so they rotate on their own in the holes and line up 90 degrees from the joint. Then I tape the control surface (in a neutral position) to the wing or stab and let the glue dry. I tape them so a gap doesn't open up before they dry.

Everyone has a slightly different method of doing them though. Most will get the job done well.

Thanks guys, I get the idea now for lining up the pin hinges. About depth of drilling the holes..... if you drill the right size hole, does the large hinge part keep it from going in too far, or?

We have two ERNIE'S now? Trouble man......

Hi there from Oz,
Have only ordered a "Larger Revolver", so can't add comments or feedback yet. Feel like I already know this model from reading these posts. Know that power will be 20cc gas, know already which of the many mods and tips I'll be using. (as in previous posts not because they're "needed", just everyone has there own slant on set-ups). In over 40yrs modelling have seen only a few models that have such a large following, so am looking forward to build, modify and fly.

Looking forward to adding comments/ideas . Hope it gets here quick..........

Welcome to the forum lean-run! Glad you found us. -Al

Ernie, you'll see. You just have to keep an eye on them. It's not that big a deal.

The area of the hinge is wider and more square. To get the hinge in deep enough to keep the joint tight, I either use a counter sink, a large drill bit or a hobby knife to open the opening of the hole a bit so they slide all the way in nicely.

Oh, and the Robart guide comes with two sizes of drill bits and two sizes of guides for large and small hinges.

5 3/2 x 2" long! Sounds about right. If there to long cut them off.

welcome lean run

warbird - the 50cc version (R90) is really nice, but more tame than the R70. And the R70 is more tame than the R57 (I understand).
The R90 builds heavier than most 50cc airframes, and the relatively long tail moment and (relatively) smaller control surfaces limit quick aerobatics. Having said that, the R90 is a beautiful, smooth airframe that flies well and presents cleanly against most sky conditions. Good visibility to in excess of 2^11 feet .

Right on! Flies like my ultralight helicopter does. Like a tank compared to an rc helicopter.

Very informative tips on Robart hinges.

I know this will have been answered because of the number who run DLE 20cc or similar, but 300 pages is a lot to check.

Question: is there a particular mount that fits better, or will any standard type hard composite mount give length clearance. i.e. firewall to spinner ring on cowl.

Know all will be obvious when model arrives, just preparing. (Been 3 days and still not here!)

The stock mounts will work perfectly with your Rcgf 20cc beam mount. If that's what you're planning on using...

Ive used the mounts that came with the plane running the DLE20. The VV20 looks to be pretty much identical. You'll need to do some cutting and gluing but that only takes a couple minutes. No biggie.

OK, no problems. Just have to wait now. Delivery est. end next week. The Princess says I've got to learn to be patient.

Told her I'm too old to learn, and there's the anticipation of a new model. Be patient, yeah right...........
