Larger Revolver
#7901
G'day,
I have a Revolver 70 on order and should be delivered within the next month or so. (Slow boat from China) I will give an update on the kit and its condition when it arrives. Have a DLE 20 already waiting and ready to go.

I think I speak for all on here, when I say welcome welcome and you're gonna looove that engine on that plane!!!! Please do let us know how you're getting on with it when you do

Thanks for the welcome.
I have all the gear needed to fit it out. Already bench run the engine. All I'm waiting on is the airframe. Hopefully it should arrive soon. Will keep you posted.
Cheers,
Rick

Flew my R70 for the third time this season. Yep, only the third. Just before Joe Nall I took it up to make sure everything was in good shape. Ripped out the landing gear on my first flight. This fuse had seen numerous landing plate rebuilds and it was time to retire it. I got the new fuse just a few days before I was supposed to leave for Joe Nall. I had just enough time to get it rebuilt and ready to fly. Even though it is technically against the rules I did the maiden at Joe Nall. Just a click or two on the aileron to get her level. She bounces a bit on the landing so I hadn't flown her again until today. I was lazy and it took me several months to get around to reinforcing the landing plate a bit. I didn't go crazy. I just added some more epoxy to it. Finally got the nerve to take it back up today. Landing was smooth and uneventful. LOL. Anyway, I was reminded of just how well this things flies and how beautiful it looks in the sky.

Sbach342Guy - What engine you packing in that R70? (I have two - one with a DLE20 and one with a YS140. Love them both.) Are you not allowed to maiden a plane at Joe Nall? Or do all planes flown there need to be giant scale?

Hey, guy. Just a suggestion. My first revolver liked to do the porpoise thing on landing. I moved the CG back and it landed much better. The suggested CG is extremely conservative (as many members in the last 317 pages have said). A lot of us have found that as far back as 6 3/4" gives the best aerobatic performance while still being very stable. I had my second rev at 6.75", while my current rev (3rd) was a little squirrelly at 6.75", so I settled on 6.5". She slows to a crawl on landings.
Anyway, I just figured I'd throw that out there in case you hadn't had a chance to play with the CG yet.

I'm all electric at this point so I'm running with a Hacker motor. Joe Nall is technically a Giant Scale event so on most flight lines you need to be 80" or bigger. They do have an electric flight line w/o any size limitations. There is no nitro flight line so everything there is either gas or electric. I haven't seen the rule but I've been told by several people that you aren't supposed to do a maiden at Joe Nall. I think it is a safety thing because of all the planes in the air.

As your flying improves, keep an open mind regarding CG. Many planes, and especially this one, can be improved by moving the CG back from suggested. If you look into it further, there's a LOT going on here, and personalizing it for yourself can pay off for you. Great Planes in particular runs suggested CG forward quite a bit. That's for the test flights though.... After that it's up to you to figure out what's right.

Slowly move the CG back until you get the slower flight characteristics you want, and I bet you won't even notice a reduction in stability. Each plane will be a little different, but the revolver's CG will go real far back before you'll notice a reduction in tracking and stability.
I have a theory, but I haven't looked into it. My previous rev had .75"more aft CG than my current one and was rock solid, but it was also significantly heavier due to a smoke system (11+ lbs vs about 9-9.5 lbs). My current rev is the only one I did dual aft elevator servos on. I think there ended up being a difference in static CG and dynamic CG because the two exact same airframes were so different in weight, and where the majority of that weight was located. My current rev (9.5lbs with rear elevator servos) at 6.5" will do much better pop tops and spins than my last one (11+ pounds) with a CG of 6.75". Anyway, that was kind of pointless to go into, but thought I'd just share my experience of playing with the CG on this plane.

Yeah, I always start with a forward CG until I get confortable with the plane. While I have owned a Revolver for 5 yrs now I haven't flown it much lately AND it is a new fuse. With the new fuse I started from scratch with the CG. I'll have it on the CG machine tonight. I bought new batteries a week or so ago so I needed to tweak the CG anyway. Great info guys. Thanks.

CG was 5.5" with the new battery. The old battery was a hair heavier so it would have been a little more nose heavy. I moved the Rx battery as far back as I could and moved the big flight pack (6s 3300) as far back as possible and now I'm close to 6". If I need to get it closer to 6.5" I'll need to ADD weight to the tail. Oh, I also weighed the AUW of the plane and it is 9lbs 1oz.

If you got it at 6", I'd fly it before adding weight. You may like it at 6". If you want more aggressive flying out of her, then go back a little more. I wouldn't go more than a half inch before flying it first. If you do want to go back more, I'd probably go to 6.25", then 6.5". But that's just me. I wouldn't want you to go to where I like it and then crash. I'd feel terrible!

Adding weight an absolute last ditch attempt at getting correct CG here. My #2 Revolver required that the elevator AND rudder servos be mounted in back. Way different than first one (which had pull/pull rudder mounted mid ship), though equipped almost identically. Point being, CG requirements are/can surely be different plane to plane. -Al

Oh, I have no plans to add weight. I'm hoping that a 6" CG wil work so I don't have to consider moving the servos to the tail. Sounds like more work than I would want to do anyway.

Got one flight in after work today. She definitely comes in much slower now. I'll fly it this way for awhile before making any more adjustments. This just might be perfect now. Anyone else get new pilot jitters when playing with CG settings? My hands were shaking like crazy when I came in to land.

No doubt. Every circuit I did I lowered the throttle a tad to see how she handled. I've been flying about 6 yrs now and landings still make me nervous. Knife edge spin? No problem. Time to land? Engage nervous fingers.
