Default New Great Planes Shoestring

I was sure pleased to see Great Planes add a Shoestring back to there lineup. I had the 60 size and it was sure a sweet plane. I hope the 40 size is just as good. I always wanted to find and old 40 size Goldberg Shoestring kit to build. This is the next best thing. Way to go Great Planes! I am guessing this will be a real winner. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXXJF3&P=0

Found this video to share. This thing should really haul the mail with an O.S 55 or perhaps a Saito 72-81. I had an SK 90 2 stroke on my 60 size Shoestring and that thing really hauled it for an engine that don't really turn out high rpms. Perhaps a Tower 75 could be crammed in thi 40 size?LOL

My partner Geoff Barber has one of these coming his way for an RCU Magazine review.

With the cold weather coming fast, we're hoping to get this one knocked out as soon as possible, so keep an eye on the magazine in about a month.

Thanks for the heads up Minn. I will keep my eyes open for the review. I plan on ordering one just as soon as they become available, but the flying season is quickly comming to an end here in Illinois and this may be a next season plane unless it comes available real soon and I can conjure up some serious motivation.

Just got word that Geoff's will be shipping today. Maybe I can convince him to do a build thread on it as he goes along so you don't have to wait for the review to come out.

I clicked onto Tower about a half hour ago looking for maybe a new arf and found the new Shoestring. I start breathing heavy and drooling!! "IT'S BACK"!!
Then I see it's a 40 size plane :-( I lost my 60 size to a mid-air a few years ago and have been waiting a long time for the same plane. Sadly for me this is not it. Don't have anything against 40 size planes but I really wish Tower had come back with th 60. Woe is me!!!!

Mine is in the mail. I'm going EP with this one, but I don't wanna use the RimFire. Gotta run the numbers 'cause I certainly want the top speed this model is capable of.

Can't wait to get it on the bench!

I have completed the assembly, and I will try to post some pictures tonight. The shoestring is one NICE plane!!! I mounted an O.S. .55ax with a Pitts muffler, and I'm controlling it with a 2.4 GHz 7C. MinnFlyer and I are going to try to maiden this weekend, so I'll keep you all posted!

I will say this: The fit and finish of the Shoestring is first rate, and if it flies half as good as it looks, it'll be a showstopper! I installed an OS .55 AX with a Pitts style muffler, and it should be very fast!

I am still building my order, but look forward to getting one here soon. Was the pitts muffler a must using the 55AX or is there room to use stock muffler and cut the cowl?

The manual says you can use the stock muffler, but there is a lot more cowl cutting that needs to be done. The firewall is recessed on the bottom to make room for a stock muffler. I just happened to have a Pitts muffler, and all but the front edge and the tips of the pipes fit inside the cowl. with the large cheeks on the cowl, the corner of the muffler is barely noticeable. If you look at the last picture closely, you'll see the little bit of muffler that sticks out. It makes for a very clean looking cowl.

Just droped in....

Nice to see this plane, but not sure why they went with this size???
Bigger, always flys better, IMHO...

Compete with the other's in this class?? ( H9 sundowner 50, and that other one they just came out with, and the kyosho f1..)

I just can't see passing up the Minnow, or TOni for the basically the same price...

I think a great move would be to go with a 26-43cc size shoestring to compete with the 26cc H9 Sundowner....
Now that would work out nicely...

Which Pitts muffler did you use, Slimline Q, regular Slimline, Bisson, or J'tec?

I have the plain Slimline. I had it laying around from an old tower .46 (os .46) and the bolt holes lined right up.

You could build [link=http://www.topnotchkits.com/index_files/TN_Kit5.htm]this one.[/link] Mines about 70% built, and it's a nice laser cut kit.

Got mine, nice bird. Using a Eflite 46, 60amp esc and a 5s. The only thing I don't like is the tailwheel, looks a little flimsy to me.

THe Shoestring flew this past weekend! Test flights were very nice! The wind was blowing between 10 and 12 mph, but didn't bug the plane at all. Slow flying is ok, but it really accels when flying fast. Landings are good, but it drops quickly. The tail wheel on mine stood up well, but we only put two flights on it... It was pretty cold and wet out that day!

I have seen that kit before and have considered it. Just hadn't really read much on how well it builds and flies....so please let us know in the kit forum once you get it done and fly it.

Thanks for the flight report. Sounds a bit similar to the 60 size GP Shoestring when you describe its flying and landing characteristics. Sounds like a big heap of fun![8D]
