RE: Global/VQ 1.20 size Turbo Porter
Well, after inspection, the only thing that appears to be missing are the wing dowels. Am I to assume that the airleron and flap hinges are pre- glued?

Yup, I could'nt find those dowels either. So I used dowl stock I had on hand. Floats and snow-skies are next to configure. Might be able to fly it this weekend if snow is melted. The hinges do appear to be glued in place, could'nt tug them out. You might want to check out better tires. Also, balsa mounting plate at the tail may not hold tail wheel mount strong enough, consider plywood epoxied on. Careful with the heat gun on shrinking the covering too [fast, light passes] What engine you using on it ? Seeya tonight, MM

insyt21st.....The hinges on the fin and stab were not glued in, I haven't had a chance to do a pull test on the ailerons and flap hinges yet. I'm planning going with a similar tailwheel set up MM is using. I was going with a SIG style but it requires too much modification to make it worth while. I too am missing the wing dowls. Plan on finishing it up this weekend. Mike (ACF)

Well, I got dowel stock today and about three miles of airleron extension cords. I like your tail wheel also MM. Where did you get the parts? Im going with the saito 150 GK hemi head w/ rear exhaust. I guess 16/8 prop. I wonder if a 15/7 3-blade would look too small. Heres a link to another Tail wheel I was looking at. Kinda pricey but it looks like a spring would fit in there.http://centuryjet.com/product_info.p...roducts_id/583

All tail wheel parts came from spares and made myself. Three- blade props and spinner just arrived and have been installed. MA 16/8 props with Tru-Turn spinner from Tower TRUQ1094. How's it look ? MM The "Tip"guards are metal banding strap cut to length with double sticky tape. The sure save the tips from damage on sharp turns. MM

My shop would look like that if I didnt have three teenagers!!. I had thought that a 16/8 three blade might be too much prop MM. It really looks perfect and I think we are using the same motor so if its not, thats where im going. Bob

Mind you, the 16/8 will pull the plane faster in flight but that's what all there is . Can't find a 16/6 or 7 pitch which would be best. Remember, this is not a racing plane but a STOL aircraft.. My RX. and battery is located in the lugage compartment, which made me have to attach lead on the motor mount itself to balance out. I'll tell you how much only if you ask .......... MM

I'll tell a little secret, The LHS went out of business a couple weeks ago. I've been stock-pileing a lot of spares and supplys for quite a while [ in case something like this happened] [and it did] [] MM

Also had time tonight to mount gear, steering and rudder. I guess Im gonna stick with the stock tail wheel till I find something better.

I'm also beefing up the main shock strut mount at the top of it. Little-bitty wood screw just does'nt inspire confidence. I'll switch to a stainless steel 6/32 with a ply wood plate on the inside. Also a rubber washer between strut and outside flat of body. Rubber washer for the wing struts too. Off to work, MM

Did the first flight. Flys OK. Main gear connector at the axles needs a better containment clamp. Can work loose. Saito 1.50 pulls it around OK when mixture is set right. Have'nt tried the three-blade prop yet. Youtube video to follow soon of first flight. It do attract attention at flying site. Quite windy today, will fine tune the plane maybe next week. Real fun trying to get in and out of basement. I'll post photos tonight. Seeya, MM

Well, not a bad day fly'n. Winds came and went. Except for the plane being quite large and bulky to move, It does quite well. On par with my .90 size Porter next to it. Because of the large wing area, these Porter's work best on a calm day. [winds do push them around]. Here's some pics of the day. Video will be along soon. MM Oops, I did need to mention, I'll try to figure out how to tighten-up those axle clamps. Running off the runway will make an axle "spring" out of it's clamp. [ Were'nt Porters suppose to be made for off-runway situations? ]

Thats sure is some beautiful scenery. Looks cold there, Good performance wx. Whats the altitude. As you can see MM. I am from muggy humid summer North Carolina and we have the same engine prop combo( oh yeah, I got the 16/8 three blade) I wonder If mine will be a dog in hot weather. Im gonna have my bubby tack weld the gear arms together inside the clamp then dremmel some indents inthe arms for the clamp screws. That should work

Ya, It's about 45 degrees right now. I'm at 4500 feet. Scale performance only with that prop. That covering is not the best quality- wrinkles in the sun, tightens back up in the cold . If your altitude is less, yours will perform better. Yes, a TIG weld on the axles would work, albeit permanently. Maybe wrapping telephone wire then flux and soldering it would be just as strong, then it could be heated and removed if need be. Whats next ? MM

I suppose there will be many "next" issues. I was a test pilot for Piper aircraft for many years and basically we spent every day dealing with engineering "teething" problems in every type. So goes Scale aircraft. The way of their big brothers. In RC I spend the majority of my shop time doing corrective and preventative maintenence on my birds. It never ends and by the looks of your shop I know you are quite familiar with this. Our forums here, to me, are the RC equivilent of the advisory circular and airworthiness directive.

That makes more sense with the solder and wire. I think I may go that way also. Im gonna still notch that inside wheel collar. Might be the Achilles heel!

Some thing I discovered...the covering is NOT iron-on. It's some kind of self stick stuff. May explane why it's not very stale in regards to shrinking and sagging due to temp changes. If you reach inside the fuse and put a finger on the back of the covering your finger will stick to it. I'll admit it's pretty tough stuff. I forgot to cut the slit in the stabilizer so it would slide past the rudder/steering rod and tried to slide it into the stabelizer saddle and it just wouldn't slide all the way in, I really pushed hard, no give, then finally realized what was happening. Cut the slit and it slide right in. Anyway, hope this covering doesn't become an issue down the road...we'll see. Mike (ACF)

Hey all. Your right, that covering is stick on and very heat sensitive as MM stated. Responds very well to just a blow dryer. However, the easier to shrink, the easier to strech so very sensitive to climate change. Two items on my list 1.:What are the two 5mm threaded brass anchors for? 2.: I foundthis a Lowes in their specialty section. Perfect wing nut. 10-32 but fits perfect in 5mm. One wrap of teflon really makes it snug.

I appreciate the compliment. I spend a lot of time going back over and correcting/improving the problems left for us, the consumer. ATTENTION PLEASE ON THIS NEXT ISSUE ! [] The horizontal stab....... The protrusion hole for the plastic bolt to pass through, on the inside of the bottom of that stab, put a few drops of thin CA on the balsa and file down a metal washer to fit in the opening and place there. now you can tighten that bolt and secure that stab with confidence. It may need to be filed open to one side to allow the stab to measure up evenly with the wing tips before you tighten up. MM
