Default Clancy Aviation Baby Bee - motor size?

I just built a Clancy Aviation Baby Bee, an older ARF kit from 2002. It came with a stock brushed 180 size motor with a gearbox. I gave it a 2s lipo on an 8 amp esc. Works great except it does not have enough power to get in the air. The instructions called for a 7-8 cell 300mAh NiMh 2/3 AAA battery....old school stuff. Need a bigger battery? Bigger motor? Confused why this recommended motor that came attached to it won't work. I guess maybe my battery needs more voltage,,, ?
