Default Pilot RC 73" Sbach

Has anyone here flown one? What are your thoughts? Also, how long is the tunnel?

Finished the 73" version Pilot-RC Sbach 342 with a Syssa 30cc gas engine this week. Did not use a pipe. The standard exhaust just clears and the cowl is beautiful. Fired the engine up for the first time a couple of days ago at the field. (Was getting 8500 after 30 seconds of run time on a Xoar 18 x 6 Sword prop.) Hadn't balanced it yet so it didn't fly. It will maiden on Saturday! 11lbs fueled up.

I had one ordered from Cheif but they are on back order and couldn't give me an expected date so I got one from TBM and will be here Tuesday. I can't wait. I think this plane is the coolest thing out there. Got my DLE 30 from Tower for $259. on Tuesday. If it flies as good as it looks I, think the 50cc will be in order.

I only had two issues. The graphics were horrible, I redid most of them, and the tail wheel steering was mush, replaced the spring with a music wire tiller.

Other than that, I love it.

Mine maidened today. On the 26% the spring on the tailwheel didn't cause any problems, even on grass. I wasn't sure about it either, but it worked out. The Syssa 30cc flew it great with less than 5 minutes of prior run time...not a burble. Awesome right out of the box! It pulled and pulled. Plane was rock solid and sexy. It'll do it all. It comes in right at 11lbs. wet. This plane is a keeper! (A Red Bull scheme would be cool too.) I have an IBEC, but the four ounces up front would actually be a good thing. I shifted the tank and receiver pack forward, but still needs a smidge more. Here's a link to a short take-off video; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7HuV-Pf1Fc .

Hi RPoll, your Sbach looks great, could you please tell me if the panel on the left hand side of the cowl was put in by yourself, or by the PilotRc factory?

Many thanks.

If you are talking about the white insert to the left of the prop...I put it there to close the hole. I put louvered exits on each side of the cowl and closed some of the openings up front to keep the air exit to inlet ratio at 2 to 1. Engine stayed cool so I guess it worked. I didn't like the white so I replaced it with some black, metal speaker grill material I had. It looks good but I may have to put another layer or painted ply behind it as needed to restrict airflow. I also expanded and trimmed the openings for exhaust and spark plug cap in rubber as I noticed some minor chipping in the fiberglass around the plug cap.

Hi RPool, thanks for the reply, it was the louvered exits I was on about from reading your description.

Many thanks again.

I got mine on Tuesday of this week. I can't believe all of the cool stuff packed into this plane for the money. The motor box looks a little weak. I'll probably do my standard reinforcement to that but everything else looks good. How well are the carbon gear holding up? I noticed no manual came with it. Do you just download their generic 30cc plane manual from the website?

Yes, generic manual download.

Carbon gear on my 50cc have been fine. Its hard to botch a landing with this thing unless you really try.

I've never been an ARF fan, but those sure are good looking aircraft.

Gear are tough! Landed a little long in order to dodge puddles from all the rain on two flights. Grass was like velcro and once had to bring it about sharply...it took a big hop sideways but everything is in terrific shape. Whew...

Thats a 140, i would have gone 160 on my similar size and weight EF Yak so I would think for sport flying and IMAC style it would be fine. I don't know if I'd expect prop hanging 3D or not, they are good little motors though.

At the lower right corner of the page if you scroll down a little there's a pull down that says CURRENCIES, set it to your dollars of choice

Finished up on Saturday and balanced at the recommended rear of the wing tube. Has this point been working out as a good starting point for CG. I don't like the generic manual as far as one point fits all but maybe it works.

That will get you close but that will still be a touch nose heavy. Mine tucks to the canopy slightly on a 45 degree inverted upline.

I'd rather start nose heavy than the other way.

Yup, you got it. When you get over the jitters of the first flight you're going to love it.

I ordered one from Chief Aircraft yesterday, Do you all think the DLE 30 or the Fuji 34ei would be the best engine for the airplane?

If you want one Troy Built has them in stock, I think Cheif is still backordered. The DLE 30 I have on mine has plenty of power even out of hovers. But if you like Fuji it should have what you need as well. All up weight on my plane is 11 lb 8oz. Other than being tail heavy on the maiden flight it is a wonderful plane. My next one will be 50cc.
