BH Gilmore Red Lion 50cc
Here are some pics of the large Black Horse Gilmore Red Lion Wedell-Williams 1930`s racer
It is packed very well, but still there is a little shipping damage on the fuselage behind the cockpit.
But fortunatly, the its very easy to fix.
Otherwise, the quality seems quite nice. Alot of the work with the samll this have already been done.
The cowl is HUGE!
Has a nice radial dummy in it......which I will remove so I can see my ASP 400 Radial.
This plane has split wings which is very nice for easy transport it to the field. Nice feature.
Landing gears seems nice too. It has spring suspension built in.

Looks like an interesting project. I would like to see some pictures of the gear installation when you get that far. The radial ought to sound sweet on a low pass.

Yea, low pass at idle will sound nice.
I am a little disapointed in these glow radials when they go full RPM. They almost sound like a single cylider 4 stroke.....almost
Here are 2 vids
ASP 5 cylinder : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u56HE...eature=related
OS 7 cylinder : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvK4ocBLNzk
Niels, I think that little engine will fit fine.
It is about 31cm at the front, and 29cm a the rear of the cowl.
The ASP looks tiny in there with its 23cm diaméter
Got the gear assembled, and just put everything together to see how it looks

it is nose heavy right now, but not by much...
I will glue on the tail, and install the wing servos and stuff that cant be moved.
Then see how the CG is.
Then i can maybe move the 2 elevator and rudder servos to the rear.
But maybe placing the battery in the rear would be enogh......we will se

Yes, the cowl coul be made real nice on the inside......but it will just weigh more.
Just painting the inside of the cowl black helps alot.

RE: BH Gilmore Red Lion 50cc
Hi Johannesen
good work with painting the inside black I went the opposite and painted beige, that's how mine looks like. With the CG you will have no problem just put the batteries far to the back into the turtle deck. It fly's very easy and stable. just be careful and do not something stupid like me and have a nose over when I hit a soft spot on the grass where we fly and damage the wheel spad, there are no spare parts available. The landing gear is very strong and takes a lot.
Don't forget to seal all the seams of the film you get oil every where otherwise the covering comes off very quickly.

Thanks Primi
Where have you got your CG at ?
Manual says 13cm
The videos I have seen on the maiden flights sometimes look tailheavy.........
Looking at the german forums it seems that some have used 10cm and 12cm.
Bummer about the lack of spare parts.

I saw your thread on the p-36A
The wood on the firewall is normal on this one.
They designed it for a 50cc 2 stroke, and it seems allright.

Thanks Tom
unfortunately when I broke them, there were no spare parts at all available, good it is now. Anyway I ended up making some fibreglass ones.
The CG I used is 130mm as in the manual and it fly's very well.

RE: BH Gilmore Red Lion 50cc
By the way I reinforced the firewall inside and out with angle pieces, I didn't trust even with no vibration with the radial.
What was of help when it flipped no damage at all.

Great work on the wheel pants Primi [sm=thumbs_up.gif]
I have applied wood glue in the seems of everything inside the fuselage at the firewall. It looks like a nice clever and strong design.
Did you messure the CG with the plane upside down, or just on the lower surface of the wings.......it seems to make a difference. ?
Have you messured the RPM with the 20/12 porp ?
And do you use the 2 3mm metal screws to secure the wing at each end of the alu wing tube ?
I woulkd think that the screws in the wing roots would be enough....works on most other planes ?

RE: BH Gilmore Red Lion 50cc
I also reglued everything I could as I usually do with ARF's but special care you have to take with the bottom sheeting from the fuse. Because the whole weight from the radial is sitting on this part in the stand for transport and storage the balsa get pressed in, therefore I soaked the timber with super glue which made it in this area hard and solid. Ideally it should be fiberglassed.
Yes I checked the CG from the bottom side, at this size and weight it was more convenient. The RPM were around 6300 what I believe but will check on the next flight.
Also as you mentioned I don't use the screws on the wings as well, I never did on others so why have them on this? The tube can't move inside the wing and the wing is secured enough from inside the fuse.
keep posting on your progress.
