Hanger 9 J-3 Cub 40, which four stroke engine size?
I am interested in purchasing a Hanger 9 J-3 Cub, 40 size. I would like to fly the Cub in a scale manner, but would like to have the power to do stall turns, loops, rolls, cuban 8, etc.
Which 4-stroke engine size to purchase. (56, 62 or 72)

I've a Goldberg Anniversary Cub... I'd guess a .40 size and it has an older Saito .50 and does all those things easily so I'd say the .56

I have one that came as a Plug and Play with an Evolution 46. I sold the Evolution and replaced it with a Saito 72. I have not flown it yet with the 72 but I also have the older version of the same plane with a Saito 56 and it's heavier than the new version. I flies nice and seems to enough power to do all of the things you have listed. The 56 is a very nice running engine as I have three of them. All of the Saitos you have listed in addition to the 82 will all fit in the stock mount it just depends on how much power and prop clearance you want. The 56 should fly it nice though. The 62 I believe is the same case as the 56 but uses the camshaft of the 72 and uses a little more fuel and makes a little more power. I was going to go with a 62 until I came across the smokin' hot deal on the 72 so I went with it instead. You can't go wrong with any of them.

I'd go with the 62 for the aerobatics you describe. If you think you'll ever put her on floats go with the .72

I had the old style for many years with a Saito 50 and it did all the stuff you mention.
If you are buying another Saito, try to get the 62 for it is a very nice running engine with the cam and bearings of the 72. It will give you the most flexibility throughout the years

Even though all these engines have the same mounting bolt spacing, the fuel consumption goes up with the displacement.
If you are buying another Saito, try to get the 62 for it is a very nice running engine with the cam and bearings of the 72. It will give you the most flexibility throughout the years

The Saito FA-56 is a real sweetheart and will do everything you need with the exception of 3D. I do normal aerobatics with a WWI biplane all the time with my FA-56.

I fly mine on a Saito 65, nice scale flying, and scale acrobatics. To fly a Cub well requires good rudder skills and aileron to rudder co-ordination more than raw power. A Cub being flown in a scale manner, even acrobatically, is a graceful sight and the 4 strokes add a further dimension of reality
