I would really like a twin cylinder gas engine that will fit under the beautiful cowling without having to carve it up and hang a big ugly cylinder out the bottom. Also with enough power to fly on floats!! Any ideas???
Hi,
Anyone know how many cc the RVC flat twin cylinder CD engine has? Picture of the engine below (it is not released yet).

I think based on what was said above, they have it set up for a G26 magneto. G26 EI will be lighter and need lead, but even this is very heavy compared to a DLE30. So I do not agree with above stated that a DLE 30 would be a good engine for this model because you will just have to add a bunch of lead anyway, unless you really think it will need 30cc power, which I dont think it will need that much. My Taylorcraft is on a G20 and has enough power, but that requires a little more because the wingspan is only 80" and that is more aerobatic. This big floaty wing on this plane will need less power, so I think any more than 26cc is not needed. I would stick with the recommended engine, Hangar 9 usually has that covered pretty good.

1.20 4-Stroke going in mine. I couldn't bring myself to put a gas engine in this airframe if I was made to. Nothing worse than a nice scale model on a flyby sounding like a Stihl chainsaw. I will never understand how/why people do that.

I have this plane on order. I am looking at either an FG 21 or an FG 30.

I thought for scale sound and looks, you have to go electric. Add a sound system to it and it hits all the high points of a cub. Otherwise, it sounds like a model.

That said, I think getting the right sound would make the model heavy.

I Have a MVVS 35 gaser and a DLE 30 , A Saito 1.80 , a Super Tiger 3000 converted to gas all not in use at present.....I am wondering what would be the best motor for the Cub.......This Hanger 9 Super Cub will be going on a set of fiberglassed foam floats and I think I would like to put a gas motor on it...I already have a 1/4 J3 Cub with a 4 stroke OS 1.20 on it and I am building another BUSA 1/4 Cub that will have a Gemini twin on it so I can live with the gasser on one ...I know Cubs sound so nice with a 4 stroke motor but gas has its advantages...Besides I can always change out the motor later if I want ...I am more a fan of kit built planes but this ARF looks pretty nice for the price...It seems heavy enough to be well built...I find if they are really lite they are flimsy and dont stand up to my rough use...Does anybody have an opinion on which motor would suit this plane better, the MVVS 35, The DLE 30 or the Super Tiger 3000.... I have not run the Super Tiger But both the DLE 30 and the MVVs 35 run great...I am leaning towards the MVVS 35...because it is a little heaver...If not I will buy a Zenoah G 26

bikerbc, since your going with floats, and list a nice choice of engines, I'd say whichever one C/G's the best without add'ed weight.

Yes thats why I was leaning towards the MVVS 35 , I think it is the heavier and most powerfull of my motors...

Supposed to pick mine up tomorrow from my hobby shop. Can't wait to assemble her. It will be neat to compair it to my D.Patrick PA-18. I sure hope it flys as nice as my DP, but I have no doubt that it will as I have never had a bad flying H9 airframe. Only thing I think I will change are the black N numbers. Going to have some slanted N numbers cut out of the correct color of blue. I only hope they are easily removable and not Ultracote. Kudos to whoever picked the blue and white scheme, she is really pretty in those colors. I also picked up a really nice lighting system for position and landing lights. They are extremely bright and will make her look the part for those twilight flights.

The N numbers on my 60" Super Cub are ironed on Ultrakote.

Picked up my PA-18 today. This is one nice ARF. They just keep getting better and better. The workmanship and quality is outstanding. Looks like my DP Super Cub finally has some decent competition. Great Job H9 you have a winner for sure. There was a lot of thought put into the design of this model and it really shows.

John...

Any chance of you doing a video build of this model like you did with the P-47?

RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub

I tell you guys, the more I dig into the kit, the more I am impressed. This is one TOP OF THE LINE arf kit. There are so many nice details, I continue to be blown away by the engineering and thought that went into it. I never thought we would see another PA-18 as nice as the DP model, but I am here to tell you H9 has done it and even exceeded the high water mark. Now if I could just decide between my Saito 1.20, OS 1.20 or my OS 1.60 twin. Decisions decisions. Pretty sure I'm just going to go with my tried and trused Saito 1.20 though. With the factory Saito engine mount, the firewall to drive washer measurement of 158mm is an exact fit with this combo. Couldn't ask for anything easier than that. I'm going to mount mine sideways instead of inverted, as I was suprised to see that the motor mount template is laser cut for a inverted mount for the stock engine mount beams when using a single cyl 4 stroke. I don't want to have to cut up the bottom of the cowl, and the stock fuel tank location seems to me to be way too high for a inverted instillation as well. Side mount looks like the only way to go, and I'm pretty sure my 1.20 will fit fully inclosed. Anyway, thanks again H9 for this beautiful Piper. I can't wait to get her out on my grass strip and put her through the paces!!! All I can say, you guys are going to be blown away when you get yours. :D :D

Just ordered mine from my LHS. Going electric w/ this one.
Question for Bill Brundle or anyone from Horizon. Will the JR Sport 126MG servos fit the supplied mounts w/ no mods required?
TIA
Al

RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub

MobyAl

The JR sport 126 I believe has a standard case so it should fit the mounting holes in the fuselage.
The only thing I am not sure about is that the Aileron servo hatch has a prefabricated plywood servo mount and the height of the 126 might differ enough from a standard servo that the servo arm will not center in the existing servo arm slot in the servo cover.

Worst case you may need to slightly trim back one side of the slot for clearance.

I am very glad to hear all the positive comments on this model as many of us here at Horizon and specifically H9 have spent many hours on this project. This models development was vested with me so if me know if you have any questions do not hesitate to shoot me PM

Bill, what improvements is the fg-30b engine going to have? I almost bought an fg-30 for this plane and noticed a new version.

Does anyone know if the Magnum/ASP 1.60 twin glow engine will fit inside the cowl on this one?

RE: New Hangar 9 1/4 Scale P 18 Super Cub

Mine showed up Friday............the V brace in the front windshield area was knocked loose...........nothing broken........have to reglue with some canopy glue I guess.
The plane is nicely done. A lot more scale features than the 1/4 scale J3.................
Cowl panel lines and rivets are excellant...........corrugated metal look on the flaps and ailerons is excellant..........landing gear detail is very good............removeable greenhouse roof is a nice feature...........trailing edge of the wing has been machined concave so the flaps and ailerons can be attached with no hinge gap.............landing and wing lights are a nice touch. The only funky thing I see is the weird little plywood doubler that fits on the outside of the fuselage at the leading edge of the horizontal stab. That looks like something Nitro Planes would have come up with for one of their cheaper than dirt designs.
Why did you do that Mr. Brundle????? .............................it looks like a last minute add on that should have been added to the inside of the fuselage........not the outside.
