A DLE 20 will fly the wings off the PA 18 Super Cub. If you use a Pitts style muffler you can pretty much cover everything in the cowl.

Sky wagon,

i added the the pics of the cowl cutout for the FG-30 and they were the last post on page 74 (previous) so head back there and take a look. If you'd like pics of something specific let me know and I'll take it down and snap them. Those were taken with it hanging in the garage

Here's the VV 40 install

I used an OS 160 twin modified for gas. It has ample power swinging an 18-6 prop at 7200 RPM. The ignition system is available from CH Ignition. They will also convert your engine for you if you wish. The fuel I use is 20 to 1. To eliminate the mess from the crankcase drain simply drill and tap a hole in the intake manifold and install a fuel nipple. Connect a piece of fuel tubing from the crankcase drain to the nipple. Away goes the mess. I have used this on all my 4 strokes for years since OS started to do it on their four stroke engines.

Did you end up adding any baffling or opening the cowl vents for cooling?

Do you recall what size stand-offs you used?

Cheers

BarracudaHockey 11-17-2015 05:31 AM

I don't remember what size stand off's I used last month let alone last year, you know how many planes I go through a month :)

Baffles yes, from craft foam at Michaels

Your Cub looks great! Would have liked to have come up for your Fly In, but schedule didn't allow. Really liked your cowl and the paint and graphics. My Cub runs a VVRC 40 twin (the just got a new batch in stock), with the PR Bushwheels struts and 1/3 Dubro tires. I run a 20 inch prop and haven't had but one prop strike (blew a takeoff, don't ask). My engine starts easily and idles smooth. I changed the graphic colors and N number. My exhaust stacks were cut so that the cowl comes off easily and you only see about a 1/4 inch of each exhaust pipe. Power to spare and I only have a max of 3/4 throttle opening, still fly mostly at 1/3 throttle.

althepal88 11-17-2015 07:22 AM

The standoffs that come with the engine are used on mine. I used 20 min epoxy over toilet paper rolls (shortened to about an 1 1/2 in or so) for baffles. I also opened up the air scoop on the bottom of the cowl.

I have a DLE 35ra in mine, doesn't look terrible sticking thru the cowl and lots of power, got a chance to fly yesterday here's a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elniGn62pZU

BarracudaHockey 11-18-2015 05:48 AM

Yea, i wanted something that didn't mangle the cowl like the Evolution 26 did, it's just not a Super Cub to me w/o that oil cooler on the bottom of the cowl

iflyfloats 11-18-2015 06:12 AM

I agree Andy, looking to get a VVRC 40 this next year to put in mine and hinge the cowl for access

Thanks!

Did you also create any air exits

Cheers

Thanks very much ozie. Your cub sure looks remarkable. I'm not a fan of the stock standard scheme as there are too many around so like how people such as yourself have done a good job changing it,- good inspiration. Although I think your engine / cowl install is very tidy, I'm thinking now leaning towards the vvrc, because I see no matter what, when the motor is hanging down the famous air filter on the cowl has to go ! I would really like to keep that if I can.

I would also like to change the N number and graphic color. Did you simply re cover ? I'm thinking maybe of masking and painting, not sure if I'll get away with it, would probably need a paint that will dry quite flexible. How did yours turn out ?

guppypilot 11-23-2015 06:46 AM

I've been going through the thread and haven't found some basic info I'm looking for. Can anyone tell me the height of the tail, the width of the stab, and the spread of the gear? The website says it 68" nose to tail, is that accurate? I'd like to know I can transport this before I buy it!

Thanks in Advance
Mike

BarracudaHockey 11-23-2015 07:16 AM

17.5" bottom of tail wheel to top of rudder
32" (give or take)
71" spinner to light

guppypilot 11-23-2015 08:46 AM

Thanks! what about the width of the gear? It looks like it will fit :)

BarracudaHockey 11-23-2015 09:07 AM

Not as wide as the stab :)

Around 19"

Did you do any mods to strengthen the firewall for this engine? That's what I have to put in mine. I'm surprised at how much of the cowl neede to be trimmed off. How was the balance?

iflyfloats 11-30-2015 05:51 PM

I bought mine used but not flown and I changed engines so I made a copy of the firewall out of 3/16 light ply and epoxied to the inside of the firewall, plugged the other holes from the outside and drilled new holes. I had to add weight to the firewall but I don't remember how much, I mounted my throttle servo and ignition beside the fuel tank.

185skywagon 12-03-2015 12:35 PM

Anyone used the ESM beaver floats on this ?

Fulcrum2111 12-12-2015 07:26 AM

Please can anyone tell me the height of the rudder of a stock h9 pa-18? I mean the distance between the floor and the top of the rudder when in the ground.

Scroll up :)

althepal88 12-12-2015 05:06 PM

It all depends on how far down the nose of the Cub is in the ground.:) But, if she is resting ON the ground, it would be 18 inches.

Finally maidened my Super Cub. It was hard to start the VVRC 40, finally it fired up by means of an electric starter.
Great flyer and plenty of power. Absolutely no trim needed! What do you guys mix on the elevator with flaps deployed?http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2136789

BarracudaHockey 12-21-2015 06:05 AM

The SC will do a loop if you drop the flaps with any speed and no elevator compensation.

You need down elevator with flaps, how much will need some tinkering to find out.
